Below is a transcript of the interview: Charlie: As you know addicts are very skill full at manipulating life so others cop the responsibility of their actions. Not them. You see, and they've been handling the consequences of the addict's choice. Right, and they keep handling it for them and it never gets put back on him. So he lives a fantastic life. He doesn't have to earn money, yet he can take drugs, come home anytime he wants, eat when he wants, turn on the electricity, and there is hot water. Christine: No one else can do that in life, except for a drug addict. Charlie: Exactly. Christine: You get rewarded. Charlie: Because they (parents/spouses) are taking all the consequences of his actions. So what do parents do? What do they do? You know, what do they do? It's simple, they do nothing. Christine: Yeah, that's right, it forces, it forces the person to have a realisation. Charlie: Because if they don't take up the slack life is going to start to intervene, there is did it pay the bill intervention, there is, have to go to court now because I got all busted drink driving intervention. The magistrates going to intervene and cause some intervention on him. But usually the parent cops it and they try and handle this. Like how many parents have you come across that have paid the addicts fines? Christine: Yeah mostly, yeah, yeah, mostly. Charlie: The electricity company will intervene, like they'll turn it off. The landlord will boot them out on the street because they haven't paid the rent. He intervenes. Now normally the parent cops all this. Christine: Yeah, so, if, you know, if you're paying the addict's bills, if you've always got a bed for them, and if you allow them to behave like that, basically, this is the thing you've got to turn around, right? It forces the person to have a realisation. And unless you can take that away they are not going to have that realisation. An example is myself. The reason why I sought help in the end and this is after ten years of manipulating my mother, manipulating her into giving me money, manipulating her into having me at home another time, manipulating her into even going with me to buy drugs. You know I would say if you don't do this then I'm going to do this. It gets very evil. The last go, I rang up and did the usual, look I need to come home, because I had no money or whatever, and I was going to go home and do the old manipulation again, she says to me, "You're not welcome home any more". And this is after ten years of the same pattern so to me, that gave me rage. And it would have been the hardest thing she ever had to say, is those few words. And it gave me rage and I didn't speak to her again but four weeks later I was in rehab. After ten years of not doing rehab because I had nowhere to go, I had nothing to do, I had no money. Charlie: Yeah, absolutely, yeah. Christine: Yes, I was street smart but I just wasn't willing to do the whole street game, I was too tired, so that hurt, saying you're not welcome home any more. You know? I will come and buy you food and that's it. But you're not welcome home any more. That, that forced me to make a decision to get better, and that was seven years ago and I haven't used since. Announcer So you see it takes great strength to say no to someone you love.
