The overhand knot is one of the most fundamental knots, and it forms the basis of many others, including the simple noose, overhand loop, angler's loop, reef knot, fisherman's knot, and water knot. The overhand knot is a stopper, especially when used alone, and hence it is very secure, to the point of jamming badly. It should be used if the knot is intended to be permanent. It is often used to prevent the end of a rope from unraveling.
There are a number of ways to tie the Overhand knot.
In heraldry, the overhand knot is known as a "Stafford knot," due to use first as a heraldic badge by the "Lords of Stafford," then as a general symbol of Staffordshire.
As a defensive measure, hagfishes, which resemble eels, produce large volumes of thick slime when disturbed. A hagfish can remove the excess slime, which can suffocate it in a matter of minutes, by tying its tail into an overhand knot, then sliding the knot forward towards its head. This action scrapes the slime off the fish's body. Hagfish also tie their bodies into overhand knots in order to create leverage to rip off chunks of their prey's flesh.
A knot is a method of fastening or securing linear material such as rope by tying or interweaving. It may consist of a length of one or several segments of rope, string, webbing, twine, strap, or even chain interwoven such that the line can bind to itself or to some other object (the "load"). Knots have been the subject of interest for their ancient origins, their common uses, and the area of mathematics known as knot theory.
There is a large variety of knots, each with properties that make it suitable for a range of tasks. Some knots are used to attach the rope (or other knotting material) to other objects such as another rope, cleat, ring, or stake. Some knots are used to bind or constrict objects. Decorative knots usually bind to themselves to produce attractive patterns.
While some people can look at diagrams or photos and tie the illustrated knots, others learn best by watching how a knot is tied. Knot tying skills are often transmitted by sailors, scouts, climbers, cavers, arborists, rescue professionals, stagehands, fishermen, linemen and surgeons. The International Guild of Knot Tyers is an organisation dedicated to the Promotion of Knot tying.
Half Hitch was an American comic strip by Hank Ketcham, in syndication between 1943 and 1945. It was an example of military humor, but unlike most cartoons and comics, focused on the navy, rather than the army. The unnamed character first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in 1943.
During World War II, Hank Ketcham served in the U.S. Navy. During his service, he created a comic strip for the amusement of his fellow sailors, following the adventures of a short, lecherous sailor and his friends. It was published in The Saturday Evening Post where it became popular. The strip ceased in 1945, but after the great success of Dennis the Menace, Ketcham revived it as Half Hitch. The revival was distributed by King Features Syndicate, running from 1970 to 1975, as described by comics historian Don Markstein:
The strip's main character, Half Hitch, was short, rather lazy, and intensely interested in the pursuit of women. Other characters included the ship's stern captain, various NCOs and sailors, and Poopsy, Hitch's pet seagull.

This is an optional technique you can use to give your macramé t-shirt throw a higher finish. Tying an overhand knot for a higher finish will require much more attention to detail and take longer to tie. Using this technique will give your throw a more consistent pattern of knots.

Review & Tutorial :New To Bracelets? Learn The Basics: http://beyondbracelets.net/beginnerbasics • FBM Website: http://myfbm.com/ • FBM APP: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/knot-it/id961344288?mt=8 Review: This seems like a nice device for the beginner bracelet maker. It is sturdy and holds the threads in the order you are working- for those who have issues keeping their threads in the proper order this is ideal. Seems like the storage compartment makes it optimal for travel and the only real downside is that the compartment doesn't lock so it slips open if you bump it upward while working... but nothing a little tape can't fix. =) The Positives: - Keeps threads in order - Pegs hold the thread nicely - firm but not impossibly so - Securely holds the knotted loop and adjusts easily to...
MATERIAL: Six Stranded Embroidery Floss (DMC BRAND) NOTE: Since this video was requested so many times I finally decided to bite the bullet and post it. I was procrastinating because I had a feeling it would be a VERY long video and sure enough I was right. Hopefully you took my suggestion and are reading this instead of trying to follow through the video because a half an hour of knotting would be a test of anyone's sanity. Pattern number 4906 on Friendship Bracelets (dot) net. Link: http://friendship-bracelets.net/pattern.php?id=4906 For this bracelet you will need to cut your strings 70"-75" (inches) long.
