The Miss Universe competition in Las Vegas has descended into farce after the host announced the wrong winner of the title.
Comedian and television personality Steve Harvey announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez had won over Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo to rapturous applause at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
After being presented with her crown, a sheepish Harvey had to inform the audience and Gutierrez he had read the wrong name on the card in front of him.
“I have to apologise,” Harvey said to a stunned crowd.
“There’s been a mistake.
“The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines!”
A horrified Gutierrez was then subjected to the indignity of having her crown and sash removed in front of a global television audience.
Harvey said the “horrible mistake” was entirely his after he read the card in his hand incorrectly.
“It was still a great night, please don’t hold it against the ladies,” he said.
The disaster mirrored the finale of Australia’s Next Top Model in 2010, when host Sarah Murdoch too announced the wrong winner.
Miss Australia Monika Radulovic, 25, was selected for the final five from 83 countries and drew praise after she unveiled her Dame Edna-inspired national costume.
The eye-catching outfit was designed by Sydney’s Timothy Cubbo.
She was asked by the judges on her take on legalising marijuana in Australia, and responded that while allowing use had some proven benefits, the government would need to consider both sides of the proposal.
Ms Radulovic boasts an honours degree in psychology and is the daughter of immigrants who fled war-torn Bosnia 20 years ago.
The last Australian to win the Miss Universe title was Jennifer Hawkins in 2004.
The competition has been surrounded by controversy this year, with US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump forced to relinquish his ownership of the pageant after his controversial remarks on Hispanic Americans.

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell is the new Miss America, but her crowning moment was nearly overshadowed by a three-decade old pageant scandal, and a still-raw debate over whether the NFL's reigning champions cheated on their way to a Super Bowl victory.
Cantrell rode an opera performance of "Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio" from "Madame Butterfly" to the title in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall on Sunday night, besting 51 other competitors in the nationally televised pageant. She won a preliminary competition earlier in the week, also with an opera performance.
"I'm still so overwhelmed, I don't know what to say other than thank you! " Cantrell told reporters moments after being crowned Miss America.
She won a $50,000 scholarship along with her title.
Cantrell is due to make the traditional pageant-winner's frolic in the Atlantic City surf on Monday morning.
The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, who was back for the first time after resigning the crown in 1984 following a nude photo scandal. Pageant executive chairman Sam Haskell apologized to Williams, who served as head judge, on behalf of the pageant.
"I want to apologize for anything that was said or done," Haskell told Williams as they stood on the stage and the audience bathed her in applause. "Vanessa: Welcome back!"

The Miss America pageant is a long-standing competition which awards scholarships to young women from the 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The winner of the national pageant is awarded the title of "Miss America" for one year.
The pageant originated as a beauty contest in 1921, but now prefers to avoid this term since Swimsuit and Evening Wear comprise 35 percent of the overall score used to judge contestants. The pageant began in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was held there each year in September through 2004 (except for the year 2001, when it was held on October 14).
In January 2006, the pageant moved to its new home and time in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pageant presents itself as a "scholarship pageant," and the primary prizes for the winner and her runners-up are scholarships to the institution of her choice. The Miss America Scholarship program, along with its local and state affiliates, is the largest provider of scholarship money to young women in the United States and in the world. In 2006 it made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. Since most of the contestants are college graduates already, or on the verge of graduating, most of their prize money is devoted to graduate school or professional school, or to pay off student loans for courses already taken.

The disaster mirrored the finale of Australia’s Next Top Model in 2010, when host Sarah Murdoch too announced the wrong winner.
Miss Australia Monika Radulovic, 25, was selected for the final five from 83 countries and drew praise after she unveiled her Dame Edna-inspired national costume.
The eye-catching outfit was designed by Sydney’s Timothy Cubbo.
She was asked by the judges on her take on legalising marijuana in Australia, and responded that while allowing use had some proven benefits, the government would need to consider both sides of the proposal.
Ms Radulovic boasts an honours degree in psychology and is the daughter of immigrants who fled war-torn Bosnia 20 years ago.
The last Australian to win the Miss Universe title was Jennifer Hawkins in 2004.
The competition has been surrounded by controversy this year, with US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump forced to relinquish his ownership of the pageant after his controversial remarks on Hispanic Americans.

The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, who was back for the first time after resigning the crown in 1984 following a nude photo scandal. Pageant executive chairman Sam Haskell apologized to Williams, who served as head judge, on behalf of the pageant.
"I want to apologize for anything that was said or done," Haskell told Williams as they stood on the stage and the audience bathed her in applause. "Vanessa: Welcome back!"

The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, who was back for the first time after resigning the crown in 1984 following a nude photo scandal. Pageant executive chairman Sam Haskell apologized to Williams, who served as head judge, on behalf of the pageant.
"I want to apologize for anything that was said or done," Haskell told Williams as they stood on the stage and the audience bathed her in applause. "Vanessa: Welcome back!"
