Empress Dowager Cixi took over the rule of mighty Imperial China in the late 19th century. After her son Tongzhi succeeded his father Emperor Xianfeng, she made herself custodian to the minor emperor on the dragon throne. "Ruling behind the curtain" (垂簾聽政) is how Empress Dowager Cixi rules over the Chinese empire. She seized power in 1861 and has since acted as the regent for several infant emperors. During an audience, the emperor sits on the throne, behind which Cixi sits, with a curtain separating them. Cixi is behind the curtain because a female cannot get involved in politics in a patriarchy like China. Despite that, Cixi is the de facto ruler of the country; the emperor is just a puppet. And now, Guangxu the boy emperor has grown up. He wants to rule the nation on his own. Conflicts between the emperor and the regent therefore begin.
In this clip, Cixi examines a concubine of the emperor who interferes with government affairs, because the law prohibits females from politics. Ironically, Cixi herself is ruling the country, which could also be considered a political activity.

An emperor (through Old French empereor from Latin imperator) is a (male) monarch, usually the sovereign ruler of an empire or another type of imperial realm. Empress, the female equivalent, may indicate an emperor's wife (empress consort) or a woman who rules in her own right (empress regnant). Emperors are generally recognized to be of a higher honor and rank than kings.
Currently, the Emperor of Japan is the only reigning monarch with the title.
Both kings and emperors are monarchs. Within the European context, emperor and empress are considered the higher monarchical titles. However, monarchs heading empires have not always used the title—the British sovereign did not assume the title until the incorporation of India into the British Empire, and even then used it only in a limited context. Emperors were once given precedence over kings in international diplomatic relations; currently, precedence is decided by the length a head of state is continuously in office.
Outside the European context, emperor is a translation given to holders of titles who are accorded the same precedence as European emperors in diplomatic terms. In reciprocity, these rulers may accredit equal titles in their native languages to their European peers. Through centuries of international convention, this has become the dominant rule to identifying an emperor in the modern era.

"Ruling behind the curtain" (垂簾聽政) is how Empress Dowager Cixi rules over the Chinese empire. She seized power in 1861 and has since acted as the regent for several infant emperors. During an audience, the emperor sits on the throne, behind which Cixi sits, with a curtain separating them. Cixi is behind the curtain because a female cannot get involved in politics in a patriarchy like China. Despite that, Cixi is the de facto ruler of the country; the emperor is just a puppet. And now, Guangxu the boy emperor has grown up. He wants to rule the nation on his own. Conflicts between the emperor and the regent therefore begin. In this clip, Cixi examines a concubine of the emperor who interferes with government affairs, because the law prohibits females from politics. Ironically, Cixi herself is ruling the country, which could also be considered a political activity. This clip is from a 2010 historical and political drama, "The Firmament of the Pleiades" (蒼穹之昴). The drama stars Japanese actress Yuko Tanaka (田中裕子) as Empress Dowager Cixi. -

Empress Dowager Cixi took over the rule of mighty Imperial China in the late 19th century. After her son Tongzhi succeeded his father Emperor Xianfeng, she made herself custodian to the minor emperor on the dragon throne. "Ruling behind the curtain" (垂簾聽政) is how Empress Dowager Cixi rules over the Chinese empire. She seized power in 1861 and has since acted as the regent for several infant emperors. During an audience, the emperor sits on the throne, behind which Cixi sits, with a curtain separating them. Cixi is behind the curtain because a female cannot get involved in politics in a patriarchy like China. Despite that, Cixi is the de facto ruler of the country; the emperor is just a puppet. And now, Guangxu the boy emperor has grown up. He wants to rule the nation on his own. Conflicts between the emperor and the regent therefore begin.
In this clip, Cixi examines a concubine of the emperor who interferes with government affairs, because the law prohibits females from politics. Ironically, Cixi herself is ruling the country, which could also be considered a political activity.
This clip is from a 2010 historical and political drama, "The Firmament of the Pleiades" (蒼穹之昴). The drama stars Japanese actress Yuko Tanaka (田中裕子) as Empress Dowager Cixi.
