Here are 10 things the Dutch do better than Americans.
Dutch history is packed with significant achievements in the arts, business, and indoor plumbing, and they continue to outperform numerous countries, including the US, in a variety of areas.
Here are 10 things the Dutch do better than Americans.
Number 10. Happiness. According to the World Happiness Report 2013 presented to the United Nations, the Netherlands was awarded the 4th spot. The US landed in 17th place, not entirely bad but not as impressive.
Number 9. Bicycling. While cycling in major US cities presents a number of challenges, in the Netherlands bikes rule the roads. It’s estimated that 70 percent of all 4-mile-and-under treks are taken on two wheels.
Number 8. Wooden Shoes. Clogs have been an on-again, off-again trend in American fashion for decades, but among the Dutch, wooden-soled shoes have been found dating back to the 13th century. Prior to the mid 90’s they were even approved for use as safety footwear, although today it’s mostly field workers and tourists who buy them.
Number 7. Childcare assistance. Those in the Netherlands who have children are given generous sums of money by the government to help meet the high costs of raising kids. Reimbursements for day care are also available.
Number 6. Speed Skating. During the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, the Dutch team claimed 23 medals for speedskating, and also set a recent record for most gold medals earned in this event.
Number 5. Tulips. They’re grown in a lot of places, but only Holland has earned itself the nickname, the ‘flower shop of the world’. The first bulb was planted in the Netherlands in 1593.
Number 4. Free time. The Dutch put in about 30 percent fewer work hours than Americans do. They make less money, but on average their incomes are only about 18 percent lower. Plus, they don’t spend nearly as much on healthcare.
Number 3. Remember birthdays. They’re a big deal in the Netherlands, so people make sure they know whom to celebrate when. There it’s common to keep a calendar in the one place individuals know they’ll visit every day – the bathroom.
Number 2. Height. Folks in US have stopped growing, a trend that some attribute to questionable diet and lifestyle habits. Conversely, the average Dutch male is now 6-foot-1, and the mean for females is 5-foot-8.
Number 1. Making canals cool. Amsterdam is often called the ‘Venice of the North’ as it has a thriving system of waterways that are used to the full extent of their scenic, recreational, and transportation advantage. Venice, California has a few nice ones too, but they’re not nearly as extensive.

The Netherlands and the Dutch
So I finally got to make a judges video about the Netherlands and the Dutch. The Netherlands is sometimes referred incorrectly to as Holland, which does offend some Dutch people since Holland is a region / province of the Netherlands.
In this video I talk about everything from the Dutch national team which is arguably one of the best football teams to never have won the world cup.
I will of course also be talking about some of the famous actors from the Netherlands, and other things related to Dutch popular culture.

The Dutch are, on average, the world's tallest people, but it hasn't always been that way.
So what happened? Scientists believe a number of factors are responsible, such as genetics, better diet and medical care.
But now there's another theory. Research from the London School of Tropical Medicine suggests that natural selection may also have something to do with it.

In which John Green teaches you about some of the colonies that were not in Virginia or Massachussetts. Old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can say; ENGLISH people just liked it better that way, and when the English took New Amsterdam in 1643, that's just what they did. Before the English got there though, the colony was full of Dutch people who treated women pretty fairly, and allowed free black people to hold jobs. John also discusses Penn's Woods, also known as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was (briefly) a haven of religious freedom, and William Penn dealt relatively fairly with the natives his colony displaced. Of course, as soon as Penn died, the colonist started abusing the natives immediately. We venture as far south as the Carolina colonies, where the slave labor economy was taking shape. John also takes on the idea of the classless society in America, and the beginning of the idea of the American dream. It turns out that in spite of the lofty dream that everyone had an equal shot in the new world, there were elites in the colonies. And these elites tended to be in charge. And then their kids tended to take over when they died. So yeah, not quite an egalitarian paradise. In addition to all this, we get into the Salem Witch Trials, the treatment of women in the colonies, and colonial economics. Oh yeah, one more thing, before you comment about how he says we're talking about the American Revolution next week, but the end screen says Seven Years War, consider that perhaps the Seven Years War laid the groundwork for the revolution to happen.

Richard John "Rick" Santorum (born May 10, 1958) is an American author, attorney, and Republican Party politician. He served as a United States Senator representing Pennsylvania from 1995 to 2007, and was a candidate for the 2012 Republican Party presidential nomination.
Born in Virginia, Santorum was raised primarily in Butler, Pennsylvania. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and a J.D. from the Dickinson School of Law. Santorum worked as an attorney at K&L Gates where he met Karen Garver. They married in 1990, and have seven children; an eighth child died shortly after birth. Santorum was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on behalf of Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district in 1990, becoming a member of a group dubbed the "Gang of Seven".
Santorum was elected as a United States Senator for Pennsylvania in 1994. He served two terms until losing his re-election bid in 2006. Dutch history is packed with significant achievements in the arts, business, and indoor plumbing, and they continue to outperform numerous countries, including the US, in a variety of areas.
Here are 10 things the Dutch do better than Americans.
Number 10. Happiness. According to the World Happiness Report 2013 presented to the United Nations, the Netherlands was awarded the 4th spot. The US landed in 17th place, not entirely bad but not as impressive.
Number 9. Bicycling. While cycling in major US cities presents a number of challenges, in the Netherlands bikes rule the roads. It’s estimated that 70 percent of all 4-mile-and-under treks are taken on two wheels.
Number 8. Wooden Shoes. Clogs have been an on-again, off-again trend in American fashion for decades, but among the Dutch, wooden-soled shoes have been found dating back to the 13th century. Prior to the mid 90’s they were even approved for use as safety footwear, although today it’s mostly field workers and tourists who buy them.
Number 7. Childcare assistance. Those in the Netherlands who have children are given generous sums of money by the government to help meet the high costs of raising kids. Reimbursements for day care are also available.
Number 6. Speed Skating. During the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, the Dutch team claimed 23 medals for speedskating, and also set a recent record for most gold medals earned in this event.
Number 5. Tulips. They’re grown in a lot of places, but only Holland has earned itself the nickname, the ‘flower shop of the world’. The first bulb was planted in the Netherlands in 1593.
Number 4. Free time. The Dutch put in about 30 percent fewer work hours than Americans do. They make less money, but on average their incomes are only about 18 percent lower. Plus, they don’t spend nearly as much on healthcare.
Number 3. Remember birthdays. They’re a big deal in the Netherlands, so people make sure they know whom to celebrate when. There it’s common to keep a calendar in the one place individuals know they’ll visit every day – the bathroom.

In this video I talk about everything from the Dutch national team which is arguably one of the best football teams to never have won the world cup.

In which John Green teaches you about some of the colonies that were not in Virginia or Massachussetts. Old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can say; ENGLISH people just liked it better that way, and when the English took New Amsterdam in 1643, that's just what they did. Before the English got there though, the colony was full of Dutch people who treated women pretty fairly, and allowed free black people to hold jobs. John also discusses Penn's Woods, also known as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was (briefly) a haven of religious freedom, and William Penn dealt relatively fairly with the natives his colony displaced. Of course, as soon as Penn died, the colonist started abusing the natives immediately. We venture as far south as the Carolina colonies, where the slave labor economy was taking shape. John also takes on the idea of the classless society in America, and the beginning of the idea of the American dream. It turns out that in spite of the lofty dream that everyone had an equal shot in the new world, there were elites in the colonies. And these elites tended to be in charge. And then their kids tended to take over when they died. So yeah, not quite an egalitarian paradise. In addition to all this, we get into the Salem Witch Trials, the treatment of women in the colonies, and colonial economics. Oh yeah, one more thing, before you comment about how he says we're talking about the American Revolution next week, but the end screen says Seven Years War, consider that perhaps the Seven Years War laid the groundwork for the revolution to happen.

Why they changed it, I can say; ENGLISH people just liked it better that way, and when the English took New Amsterdam in 1643, that's just what they did. Before the English got there though, the colony was full of Dutch people who treated women pretty fairly, and allowed free black people to hold jobs. John also discusses Penn's Woods, also known as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was (briefly) a haven of religious freedom, and William Penn dealt relatively fairly with the natives his colony displaced. Of course, as soon as Penn died, the colonist started abusing the natives immediately. We venture as far south as the Carolina colonies, where the slave labor economy was taking shape. John also takes on the idea of the classless society in America, and the beginning of the idea of the American dream. It turns out that in spite of the lofty dream that everyone had an equal shot in the new world, there were elites in the colonies. And these elites tended to be in charge. And then their kids tended to take over when they died. So yeah, not quite an egalitarian paradise. In addition to all this, we get into the Salem Witch Trials, the treatment of women in the colonies, and colonial economics. Oh yeah, one more thing, before you comment about how he says we're talking about the American Revolution next week, but the end screen says Seven Years War, consider that perhaps the Seven Years War laid the groundwork for the revolution to happen.

The Japanese Empire occupied the Dutch East Indies, modern Indonesia, during World War II from March 1942 until after the end of the War in 1945. The period was one of the most critical in Indonesian history. Under German occupation, the Netherlands had little ability to defend its colony against the Japanese army, and less than three months after the first attacks on Borneo the Japanese navy and army overran Dutch and allied forces. Initially, most Indonesians optimistically and even joyfully welcomed the Japanese as liberators from their Dutch colonial masters. This sentiment changed as Indonesians were expected to endure more hardship for the war effort. In 1944–45, Allied troops largely by-passed Indonesia and did not fight their way into the most populous parts such as Java and Sumatra. As such, most of Indonesia was still under Japanese occupation at the time of their surrender in August 1945.
The occupation was the first serious challenge to the Dutch in Indonesia—it ended the Dutch colonial rule—and, by its end, changes were so numerous and extraordinary that the subsequent watershed, the Indonesian National Revolution, was possible in a manner unfeasible just three years earlier. Unlike the Dutch, the Japanese facilitated the politicisation of Indonesians down to the village level. Particularly in Java and to a lesser extent Sumatra, the Japanese educated, trained and armed many young Indonesians and gave their nationalist leaders a political voice. Thus through both the destruction of the Dutch colonial regime and the facilitation of Indonesian nationalism, the Japanese occupation created the conditions for a claim of Indonesian independence. Within days of the Japanese surrender in the Pacific, Indonesian independence was declared. However, the Netherlands sought to reclaim the Indies and a bitter five-year diplomatic, military and social struggle ensued resulting in the Netherlands recognising Indonesian sovereignty in December 1949.

Rembrandt van Rijn is the best known of all the Dutch masters. His range was vast, from landscapes to portraits to Biblical scenes; he revolutionised every medium he handled, from oil paintings to etchings and drawings. His vision encompassed every element of life – the sleeping lion; the pissing baby; the lacerated soles of the returned prodigal son.
Making the case for him in this debate will be Simon Schama. For him Rembrandt is humanity unedited: rough, raw, violent, manic, vain, greedy and manipulative. Formal beauty was the least of his concerns, argues Schama, yet he attains beauty through his understanding of the human condition, including to be sure, his own.
But for novelist Tracy Chevalier it can all get a little exhausting. Rembrandt’s paintings, she believes – even those that are not his celebrated self-portraits – are all about himself. Championing Vermeer, she will claim that his charm lies in the very fact that he absents himself from his paintings. As a result they are less didactic and more magical than Rembrandt’s, giving the viewer room to breathe.
Chevalier has been obsessed with Vermeer since the age of 19, when she first saw his Girl with a Pearl Earring. The girl’s startled eyes and luscious, inviting mouth produce a tantalising sense of mystery and contradiction.
An other-worldly mystery also veils Vermeer’s Delft street scenes and interiors. Apparently so everyday, they are lifted to a higher sphere by the indirect gaze and the turned back, all bathed in that fuzzy, filmic Vermeer veneer. And so often they, too, ask a question. Who wrote the letter that the woman in blue reads so attentively? Who does the girl in the gold jacket strum her guitar for? The questions are never answered but we are lured back again and again in search of an answer.

Making the case for him in this debate will be Simon Schama. For him Rembrandt is humanity unedited: rough, raw, violent, manic, vain, greedy and manipulative. Formal beauty was the least of his concerns, argues Schama, yet he attains beauty through his understanding of the human condition, including to be sure, his own.
But for novelist Tracy Chevalier it can all get a little exhausting. Rembrandt’s paintings, she believes – even those that are not his celebrated self-portraits – are all about himself. Championing Vermeer, she will claim that his charm lies in the very fact that he absents himself from his paintings. As a result they are less didactic and more magical than Rembrandt’s, giving the viewer room to breathe.
Chevalier has been obsessed with Vermeer since the age of 19, when she first saw his Girl with a Pearl Earring. The girl’s startled eyes and luscious, inviting mouth produce a tantalising sense of mystery and contradiction.
An other-worldly mystery also veils Vermeer’s Delft street scenes and interiors. Apparently so everyday, they are lifted to a higher sphere by the indirect gaze and the turned back, all bathed in that fuzzy, filmic Vermeer veneer. And so often they, too, ask a question. Who wrote the letter that the woman in blue reads so attentively? Who does the girl in the gold jacket strum her guitar for? The questions are never answered but we are lured back again and again in search of an answer.

An airliner carrying 62 people from Dubai crashed early Saturday while landing in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don in strong winds, killing all aboard, Russian officials said. A list published by the Emergencies Ministry showed the 737-800 was carrying 55 passengers and seven crew members, whose nationalities were not immediately confirmed ... The plane belonged to the budget carrier FlyDubai....
