Designing post-communism:
Recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art
The fall of the Berlin Wall as a symptom of the end of "real state socialism" signaled a permanent interest in eastern visual and material culture. In this sense socialist aesthetics far from disappearing flooded new ways of reimagining and reconstructing the past under the sign of the so called post-communist condition. While archaic forms of the socialist image production emerged as ways of rethinking a past history, contemporary art began reexamining its artistic and linguistic legacies.
The exhibition "Designing Post-Communism: recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art", tries to bear witness to this paradigmatic change in contemporary culture from the singular venue and experience of the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition features four important artists of the contemporary Cuban art scene-- Ezequiel Suarez, Filio Galvez, Hamlet Lavastida, and Rodolfo Peraza. These artists' artistic productions try to come to terms with the socialist experience in an array of representational strategies. Whether exploring the moralizing experience of the "new man" through new-media digital forms such as video games, capturing the ruins of hidden soviet inspired architecture in Havana, or appropriating the design and surfaces of visual propaganda during the first decade of Castroism of the 1960s, these artists appropriate the imaginaries of communism to understand the passing away of utopia as catastrophe.
Curated by Gerardo Munoz, this show tries to articulate the relation between past communist imaginaries and its multiple reconstructions by contemporary artists through two main themes: design and political ideology. Exhibition will be accompanied with texts by Gerardo Munoz, and Ivan de la Nuez.

Castroism (castrismo in Spanish) is a left-wing ideology, lined with and created by Fidel Castro. Castroism is influenced by many ideologies but particularly the theories of Cuban revolutionary José Martí, and after 1961, Karl Marx, Freidrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin and according to some, fellow 26th of July Movement partner Che Guevara. Castroism's main focus is the practice and theory behind revolution and revolutionary government in Cuba and promotes Cuban nationalism, Latin American solidarity, social justice and people's democracy.
Fidel Castro first expounded the main principles of Castroism in his 1953 speech, History Will Absolve Me. Here he stressed the reinstatement of the 1940 Constitution of Cuba, and also promoted a series of land and labor reforms. In this speech, he mentions little about socialism; and communist ideologies and terminology make no appearance. In the speech Castro also stated the need for Cuban nationalism, social equality and solidarity among the Cuban people. This speech strongly criticized the government of Fulgencio Batista.

Designing post-communism: Recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art The fall of the Berlin Wall as a symptom of the end of "real state socialism" signaled a permanent interest in eastern visual and material culture. In this sense socialist aesthetics far from disappearing flooded new ways of reimagining and reconstructing the past under the sign of the so called post-communist condition. While archaic forms of the socialist image production emerged as ways of rethinking a past history, contemporary art began reexamining its artistic and linguistic legacies. The exhibition "Designing Post-Communism: recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art", tries to bear witness to this paradigmatic change in contemporary culture from the singular venue and experience of the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition features four important artists of the contemporary Cuban art scene-- Ezequiel Suarez, Filio Galvez, Hamlet Lavastida, and Rodolfo Peraza. These artists' artistic productions try to come to terms with the socialist experience in an array of representational strategies. Whether exploring the moralizing experience of the "new man" through new-media digital forms such as video games, capturing the ruins of hidden soviet inspired architecture in Havana, or appropriating the design and surfaces of visual propaganda during the first decade of Castroism of the 1960s, these artists appropriate the imaginaries of communism to understand the passing away of utopia as catastrophe. Curated by Gerardo Munoz, this show tries to articulate the relation between past communist imaginaries and its multiple reconstructions by contemporary artists through two main themes: design and political ideology. Designing post-communism: Recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art The fall of the Berlin Wall as a symptom of the end of "real state socialism" signaled a permanent interest in eastern visual and material culture. The fall of the Berlin Wall as a symptom of the end of "real state socialism" signaled a permanent interest in eastern visual and material culture. In this sense socialist aesthetics far from disappearing flooded new ways of reimagining and reconstructing the past under the sign of the so called post-communist condition. While archaic forms of the socialist image production emerged as ways of rethinking a past history, contemporary art began reexamining its artistic and linguistic legacies.
The exhibition "Designing Post-Communism: recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art", tries to bear witness to this paradigmatic change in contemporary culture from the singular venue and experience of the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition features four important artists of the contemporary Cuban art scene-- Ezequiel Suarez, Filio Galvez, Hamlet Lavastida, and Rodolfo Peraza. These artists' artistic productions try to come to terms with the socialist experience in an array of representational strategies. Whether exploring the moralizing experience of the "new man" through new-media digital forms such as video games, capturing the ruins of hidden soviet inspired architecture in Havana, or appropriating the design and surfaces of visual propaganda during the first decade of Castroism of the 1960s, these artists appropriate the imaginaries of communism to understand the passing away of utopia as catastrophe.
Curated by Gerardo Munoz, this show tries to articulate the relation between past communist imaginaries and its multiple reconstructions by contemporary artists through two main themes: design and political ideology. Exhibition will be accompanied with texts by Gerardo Munoz, and Ivan de la Nuez.

This timely conference is designed to provide the community in South Florida with the opportunity to hear, first hand, the views of a leading libertarian economist and political figure in the former Soviet republic and engage in a dynamic conversation about the importance of individual rights, free-enterprise, small government and strong personal freedoms.
"I'm honored to have been invited to present this critical topic, which drives my political and economic thinking, to the audience in Miami", says Romanchuck, President of the Scientific Research Mises Center in Minsk. "It's a great opportunity to share my views on the true meaning of capitalism, the new clothes of socialism and the framework of a moral social economic system, especially with the Cuban-American community who, like Belarusians, understand full well the evils of socialism."

Jaroslav Romanchuck, distinguished Belarus politician and renowned economist presents "The Morality of Capitalism and Ayn Rand"
Jaroslav Romanchuk, a presidential candidate in Belarus in 2010, will present a unique conference entitled "The Morality of Capitalism and Ayn Rand" on February 11, 2013 at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) of the University of Miami, 1531 Brescia Avenue in the Coral Gables campus, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7:00 p.m.
This timely conference is designed to provide the community in South Florida with the opportunity to hear, first hand, the views of a leading libertarian economist and political figure in the former Soviet republic and engage in a dynamic conversation about the importance of individual rights, free-enterprise, small government and strong personal freedoms.
"I'm honored to have been invited to present this critical topic, which drives my political and economic thinking, to the audience in Miami", says Romanchuck, President of the Scientific Research Mises Center in Minsk. "It's a great opportunity to share my views on the true meaning of capitalism, the new clothes of socialism and the framework of a moral social economic system, especially with the Cuban-American community who, like Belarusians, understand full well the evils of socialism."
Following the presentation there will be a question and answer session with a distinguished panel of political thinkers, including Dr. Jose Azel, senior scholar at the ICCAS and author of Mañana in Cuba: The Legacy of Castroism and Transitional Challenge for Cuba, Glenn Cripe, co-founder and Executive Director of The Language of Liberty Institute and Olga Nodarse Chao, Founder of The Cuba Corps and author of Freedom Embattled. Dr. Andy S. Gomez, senior fellow at ICCAS, University of Miami will be the moderator.
This event is co-sponsored by The Cuba Corps, ICCAS, and the National Association of Cuban-American Educators (NACAE). Founded in 2005, The Cuba Corp's mission is to help rebuild civil society in Cuba. ICCAS serves as a world class academic center for the research and study of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies. NACAE represents the interests of Cuban-American educators at all levels and promotes their accomplishments. It also contributes to the preservation of the Cuban cultural heritage and the promotion of the principles of liberty and civil rights.
