It had been a long time since I did a 'follow the bus' routine, and so decided to do it with the Mercedes-Benz tri-axle Airavat Club Class service running on the Chikmagalur-Bangalore route. This is a (slightly) newly introduced service, a direct result of Scania Metrolink HD buses which replaced these Mercs on a few routes. Not surprisingly though, drivers get a little too excited by all that power on tap, and what with being the biggest and most powerful bus on the route, they try to intimidate every other vehicle on the road. Especially the Chikmagalur-Hassan stretch which is a 2-lane highway. Watch how this beast overtakes another KSRTC bus on a tank bund road, after having followed it for a long while. Dangerous to say the least, but I guess he did what he did and the unspoken under...

Marimayam is a sitcom aired on Mazhavil Manorama that depicts certain real public incidents that common people come across. This popular comedy show conveys a real picture of government offices in Kerala. Marimayam uses humour and satire to tug at the red tape that entangles people in rules and regulation. The show highlights sleaze, incompetence and delay in government offices, public and private institutions. The series shows the common man and his woes as he runs from one office to the other in search of a solution to his problems. Sathyasheelan, Koya, Valsala,, Mandodari and Syamala, all characters in the show, highlight how red tape often strangles the common man or ties him in knots. Marimayam is all about verbal humour, not the slapstick comedy that is found in most shows. The se...

The Charmadi Ghat section is known for its dangerous, narrow roads, so much so that only regular express buses and rigid chassis trucks use this route to and from Mangalore/Udupi. And then there are senseless people who overload mini-trucks with hay which hampers visibility for vehicles coming from both sides. On one of our journeys to Mangalore, we were stuck behind such a truck for quite some distance and the driver's patience was wearing thin. At a sharp curve, another mini truck can be seen coming only at the last possible moment, with no honking to warn traffic. The driver reacted quickly and missed the truck by inches, and even then one of the chains that holds the tailgate of the truck in place hit the bus as it passed by. My own reflexes dictated that I take the camera out of har...
