This is a short video showing the redevelopment work that took place at Newcastle Central Station during 2013 and 2014.
The video is in two parts, the first showing stills of the work being done and to be carried out. The second part is a short video of the completed work which i took in the past week.
Although the work on the actual railway station was completed last year a lot of paving work was still going on (and still is) outside, so I have delayed uploading this video.
The main work is in the portico which was added to the main station building several years after being opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. The portico has been pedestrianized and closed to all road traffic with ticket machines and retail outlets are now installed.
In the concourse the ticket office has been demolished and replaced by retail outlets with a new ticket office and travel centre opening at the west end of the station.
Some ticket barriers have been repositioned and a new departure/arrival board installed together with a large colour screen.
The main work was undertaken by Miller Construction.
The running of this station will transfer from East Coast to Network rail.

Here we have a brief glimpse inside Newcastle Central Station which was opened by Queen Victoria on 29 August 1850. The original station was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR;) and the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway (N&CR;) by Robert Stephenson who was responsible for the High Level Bridge, between 1845 and 1850.
Originally named Newcastle-on-Tyne Central, the station name was simplified to Newcastle sometime between 1948 and 1953.
The building has a neoclassical styled frontage, and its trainshed has a distinctive roof with three curved, arched spans — the first example of its kind, which set the 'house style' for the NER's subsequent main stations, culminating in the last major British example half a century later, the rebuilt and enlarged Hull Paragon in 1904. A porte-cochère, designed by Thomas Prosser, was added to the station entrance in 1863, and the trainshed was extended southwards in the 1890s with a new span designed by William Bell.
An underground station for Tyne and Wear Metro trains was constructed during the late 1970s, and opened in 1981. Part of the porte-cochère was temporarily dismantled while excavation work took place. The metro station sees 5 million passengers a year and is the third busiest station on the system.

Newcastle railway station (also known as Newcastle Central Station) is the mainline station of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, England and is a principal stop on the East Coast Main Line. It opened in 1850 and is a Grade I listed building. The railway station is connected to the adjacent underground Central Station Metro station on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
East Coast is the primary operator at the station providing Inter-city rail services southbound to York, Doncaster and London and northbound to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Other mainline services are operated by CrossCountry southbound to Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Plymouth and Reading and also northbound to Scotland while First TransPennine Express provides services to Liverpool and Manchester via Leeds. Northern Rail operates local and regional services across the North East and Cumbria, notably along the Tyne Valley Line to Carlisle via MetroCentre and Hexham, northbound to Morpeth and southbound to Middlesbrough and Sunderland while East Coast provides services to Durham and Darlington. National Express East Coast installed ticket barriers in November 2008.

Newcastle Central Station redevelopment 2013 to 2014
This is a short video showing the redevelopment work that took place at Newcastle Central Station during 2013 and 2014. The video is in two parts, the first showing stills of the work being done and to be carried out. The second part is a short video of the completed work which i took in the past week. Although the work on the actual railway station was completed last year a lot of paving work was still going on (and still is) outside, so I have delayed uploading this video. The main work is in the portico which was added to the main station building several years after being opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. The portico has been pedestrianized and closed to all road traffic with ticket machines and retail outlets are now installed. In the concourse the ticket office has been demolished ... -

The original station was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR;) and the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway (N&CR;) by Robert Stephenson who was responsible for the High Level Bridge, between 1845 and 1850. Originally named Newcastle-on-Tyne Central, the station name was simplified to Newcastle sometime between 1948 and 1953. The building has a neoclassical styled frontage, and its trainshed has a distinctive roof with three curved, arched spans — the first example of its kind, which set the 'house style' for the NER's subsequent main stations, culmina... -

This is a short video showing the redevelopment work that took place at Newcastle Central Station during 2013 and 2014.
The video is in two parts, the first showing stills of the work being done and to be carried out. The second part is a short video of the completed work which i took in the past week.
Although the work on the actual railway station was completed last year a lot of paving work was still going on (and still is) outside, so I have delayed uploading this video.
The main work is in the portico which was added to the main station building several years after being opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. The portico has been pedestrianized and closed to all road traffic with ticket machines and retail outlets are now installed.
In the concourse the ticket office has been demolished and replaced by retail outlets with a new ticket office and travel centre opening at the west end of the station.
Some ticket barriers have been repositioned and a new departure/arrival board installed together with a large colour screen.
The main work was undertaken by Miller Construction.
The running of this station will transfer from East Coast to Network rail.

Here we have a brief glimpse inside Newcastle Central Station which was opened by Queen Victoria on 29 August 1850. The original station was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR;) and the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway (N&CR;) by Robert Stephenson who was responsible for the High Level Bridge, between 1845 and 1850.
Originally named Newcastle-on-Tyne Central, the station name was simplified to Newcastle sometime between 1948 and 1953.
The building has a neoclassical styled frontage, and its trainshed has a distinctive roof with three curved, arched spans — the first example of its kind, which set the 'house style' for the NER's subsequent main stations, culminating in the last major British example half a century later, the rebuilt and enlarged Hull Paragon in 1904. A porte-cochère, designed by Thomas Prosser, was added to the station entrance in 1863, and the trainshed was extended southwards in the 1890s with a new span designed by William Bell.
An underground station for Tyne and Wear Metro trains was constructed during the late 1970s, and opened in 1981. Part of the porte-cochère was temporarily dismantled while excavation work took place. The metro station sees 5 million passengers a year and is the third busiest station on the system.

Crossing King Edward VII Rail Bridge, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK - 29th November, 2012
The King Edward VII Bridge is a railway bridge spanning the River Tyne between Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, in North East England. The bridge consists of four lattice steel spans resting on concrete piers. The total length of the bridge is 1,150 feet (350 m) and 112 ft (34 m) above high water mark. The footage in this video begins with a South to North view from Gateshead into Newcastle Central Station, this footage is taken during a sunny Autumn morning and features views of the River Tyne and the Redheugh Bridge. This is then followed by the North to South crossing, which is taken in the late afternoon as the sun is setting. During this crossing an East Coast Trains Class 91 passes heading Northbound. -
Wakefield Westgate Railway Station

Wakefield Westgate station is one of two stations in the town - the other being Wakefield Kirkgate. A look at London Victoria Railway Station on the late morning and early afternoon of Friday 23rd January 2015.
Victoria, London's second busiest rail terminal, is situated in the south west part of the city near Hyde Park and is the principal station for destinations along the south coast including Brighton, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Eastbourne as well as the south London suburbs such as Peckham.
At the end of this video, steam locomotive SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 number 35028 'Clan Line' is seen at the station waiting to depart with the 'Belmond British Pullman' to Shelford.

Ghost stations is the usual English translation for the German word Geisterbahnhöfe. This term was used to describe certain
stations on Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn metro networks that were closed during the period of Berlin's division during the Cold
War. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe any disused station on an underground railway line, especially those
actively passed through by passenger trains.
An abandoned (or disused) railway station is a building or structure which was constructed to serve as a railway station but
has fallen into disuse. There are various circumstances when this may occur - a railway company may fall bankrupt, or the
station may be closed due to the failure of economic activitiy such as insufficient passenger numbers, operational reasons such
as the diversion or replacement of the line. In some instances, the railway line may continue in operation while the station is
closed. Additionally, stations may sometimes be resited along the route of the line to new premises - examples of this include
opening a replacement station nearer to the centre of population, or building a larger station on a less restricted site to
cope with high passenger numbers.
Notable cases where railway stations have fallen into disuse include the Beeching Axe, a 1960s programme of mass closures of unprofitable railway lines by the British Government. The London Underground system is also noted for its list of closed
stations. During the time of the Berlin Wall, a number of Berlin U-Bahn stations on West Berlin lines became "ghost stations"
(Geisterbahnhöfe) because they were on lines which passed through East Berlin territory.
Railway stations and lines which fall into disuse may become overgrown. Some former railway lines are repurposed as managed
nature reserves, trails or other tourist attractions - for example Hellfire Pass, the route of the former "Death Railway" in
Thailand. Many former railways are converted into long-distance cycleways, such as large sections of the National Cycle Network
in the United Kingdom. In rural areas, former railway station buildings are often converted into private residences. Examples
include many of the stations on the closed Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway in England.
Architecturally and historically notable station buildings may present a problem if they are protected under building
preservation laws but fall into disuse. Such buildings are often simply demolished (such as Broad Street railway station
(London); a similar fate threatens Michigan Central Station), or they may be preserved as part of a heritage railway. Often, in
order to be retained as commercially viable structures within an urban environment, or as part of an urban regeneration
project, they may be repurposed for alternative activities. Prominent examples include the ornate Gare d'Orsay in Paris.

cope with high passenger numbers.
Notable cases where railway stations have fallen into disuse include the Beeching Axe, a 1960s programme of mass closures of unprofitable railway lines by the British Government. The London Underground system is also noted for its list of closed
stations. During the time of the Berlin Wall, a number of Berlin U-Bahn stations on West Berlin lines became "ghost stations"
(Geisterbahnhöfe) because they were on lines which passed through East Berlin territory.
Railway stations and lines which fall into disuse may become overgrown. Some former railway lines are repurposed as managed
nature reserves, trails or other tourist attractions - for example Hellfire Pass, the route of the former "Death Railway" in
Thailand. Many former railways are converted into long-distance cycleways, such as large sections of the National Cycle Network
in the United Kingdom. In rural areas, former railway station buildings are often converted into private residences. Examples
include many of the stations on the closed Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway in England.
Architecturally and historically notable station buildings may present a problem if they are protected under building
preservation laws but fall into disuse. Such buildings are often simply demolished (such as Broad Street railway station
(London); a similar fate threatens Michigan Central Station), or they may be preserved as part of a heritage railway. Often, in
order to be retained as commercially viable structures within an urban environment, or as part of an urban regeneration
project, they may be repurposed for alternative activities. Prominent examples include the ornate Gare d'Orsay in Paris.

Shining Time Station - How The Station Got Its Name
Stacy discovers that an old lantern with an important history cannot be repaired due to a missing part, so Mr. Conductor takes Becky and Kara back to the time of Stacy's Grandmother in the hopes of finding the part. Stacy discovers that an old lantern with an important history cannot be repaired due to a missing part, so Mr. Conductor takes Becky and Kara back to the time of Stacy's Grandmother in the hopes of finding the part.
Unfortunately the first part of the intro is cut off because the DVD recorder waited like 10 seconds after I pressed record before it actually started recording, but the actual episode is all here.
