I made a video previously of the best
Video compression method for uploading to YouTube (http://www.psynapticmedia.com/compression-tutorial-after-effects-and-handbrake-for-youtube-free-presets/), and I was a huge success. Here are my current settings, as the software has been updated since my original video.

Q & A:
################
I got some common questions after making this video, and you may be wondering the same thing.
Q:
Why don't you just use the YT preset Premiere/Adobe Media Encoder provides?
A: They are not nearly good enough for gaming or high quality video. Those presets are the #1 reason so many people are complaining about the quality of their videos, and asking me how to fix it. To be more specific those presets work great for video with very little movement, like an interview.
Q: The YT preset doesn't match YT's preferred settings, why not go with YT's preferred settings?
A: Basically for the same reason above. Also,
It's OK that it doesn't match and thats a good thing. YT will re-encode it to their standards in the end, so we want to give YT the best quality video, at a reasonable upload size.
Q: Why the
Extra Step at the end?
A: The extra step is needed for two things #1 - Adobe Media Encoder is not as good as handbrake when it comes to compressing files at lower bit rates with
H264. In other words you can achieve higher quality with small file sizes using Handbrake. #2 Adobe can make
HUGE files when you are shooting for quality, so the benefit of Handbrake is a small file size for upload, while keeping the quality. Not everyone has
Google fiber for upload, so using this two-step process can increase productivity by reducing upload time all while keeping quality high. The pro YouTubers I work with like this method because of the fast upload speeds. I like it because of the high quality.
Q: If you are going to go to handbrake anyway, why do you not use a master quality codec, like ProRes or Cineform, out of AE? That way you could use
4:2:2 or
4:4:4 color sampling and higher color bit depth.
A: I see a few people mention ProRes, Cineform, and other similar intermediate formats. They are great for better color space, which is great so you don't lose color as you move between projects.
First of all, game footage is 8bit and YouTube is 8bit (this is not
16bit raw
Epic Red footage for
Cinema. Even if it were, this method would still work great). Secondly, keep in mind the goal here is for high quality delivery to YouTube, not to create an intermediate format for your buddies to pass around at the old broadcast station (popular intermediate formats are based on limiting standards and compliance that does not apply to YouTube videos and definitely not to gaming videos). MOST IMPORTANTLY I have found that H264 at 120Mbps results in a HIGHER quality video than the formats normally found as broadcast standards like DNxHD, and no different than the highest quality ProRes and Cineform settings. In fact, H264 is nearly lossless at high bitrates. To achieve the same quality as H264 120Mbps with codecs such as Cineform or DNxHD, the result would be a file up to 5x larger. That's not even the worst part. DNxHD will NOT import into Handbrake unless you download a standalone codec, YouTube doesn't use those formats, and it does not support that color space. What a hassle for less quality and/or larger file sizes! YouTube uses H264!
Keep it simple, make it work.
