Our intention and history have been to offer esoteric materials that appeal to eclectic interests. Nights of Horror, Volume 1, certainly meets those criteria. This vintage publication fills 80 pages with two short stories, each of which has multiple chapters. The volume has 10 ink illustrations by Superman co-creator Joe Shuster. Pictures have been modified for this video but are complete in the e-book.
Nights of Horror was originally published by Malcla Publishing in 1953. This rare, 16-volume series was the subject of legal action involving a Manhattan bookstore the following year. The mayor's office prosecuted Kingsley Books for allegedly selling literature that violated decency law. They lost at the trial level and on appeal. A small fine was levied.
Men dominate, but women also abuse. Some of the stories may have been loosely based on sensational fiction found in detective magazines in the 1930s and 1940s. These typically told damsel-in-distress tales, but without much sexiness.
According to Publisher's Weekly, Mr. Shuster's 1950s underground illustrations will soon be published in an art comics anthology, Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman's Co-creator Joe Shuster. Obvious political incorrectness today, they may have been a bit of a stretch when published in the 1950s.

Joseph "Joe" Shuster (July 10, 1914 - July 30, 1992) was a Canadian-born, American-raised comic book artist. He was best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman, with writer Jerry Siegel, first published in Action Comics #1 (June 1938).
Shuster was involved in a number of legal battles concerning the ownership of the Superman character, eventually gaining recognition for his part in its creation. His comic book career after Superman was relatively unsuccessful, and by the mid-1970s Shuster had left the field completely due to partial blindness.
He and Siegel were inducted into both the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2005, the Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association instituted the Joe Shuster Awards, named to honor the Canadian-born artist.
Joseph Shuster was born in Toronto, Ontario to a Jewish family. His father, Julius, an immigrant from Rotterdam, South Holland, the Netherlands, and his mother Ida, who had come from Kiev in Ukraine, were barely able to make ends meet. As a youngster, Shuster worked as a newspaper boy for the Toronto Daily Star and, as a hobby, he liked to sketch. He had one sister, Jean Peavy. One cousin is comedian Frank Shuster of the Canadian comedy team Wayne and Shuster. When Joe Shuster was 10, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

This vintage publication fills 80 pages with two short stories, each of which has multiple chapters. The volume has 10 ink illustrations by Superman co-creator Joe Shuster. Pictures have been modified for this video but are complete in the e-book. Nights of Horror was originally published by Malcla Publishing in 1953. This rare, 16-volume series was the subject of legal action involving a Manhattan bookstore the following year. Our intention and history have been to offer esoteric materials that appeal to eclectic interests. Nights of Horror, Volume 1, certainly meets those criteria. This vintage publication fills 80 pages with two short stories, each of which has multiple chapters. The volume has 10 ink illustrations by Superman co-creator Joe Shuster. Pictures have been modified for this video but are complete in the e-book.
Nights of Horror was originally published by Malcla Publishing in 1953. This rare, 16-volume series was the subject of legal action involving a Manhattan bookstore the following year. The mayor's office prosecuted Kingsley Books for allegedly selling literature that violated decency law. They lost at the trial level and on appeal. A small fine was levied.
Men dominate, but women also abuse. Some of the stories may have been loosely based on sensational fiction found in detective magazines in the 1930s and 1940s. These typically told damsel-in-distress tales, but without much sexiness.
According to Publisher's Weekly, Mr. Shuster's 1950s underground illustrations will soon be published in an art comics anthology, Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman's Co-creator Joe Shuster. Superman, the older of the two and the acknowledged progenitor of the entire Superhero genre, was created by two Clevelanders, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June, 1938) ... Incidentally, all four men were the children of eastern European Jewish émigrés – and Shuster had been born in Canada ... Art....
