This documentary was filmed in the Jewish quarters of the Medina of Essaouira formerly known as Mogador. In the 18th century, even before and to a time period after that, this portion of the fortified city, was home to a beautiful striving Israelite community.
Who were the Jews of the Medina in Mogador? Who were favoured and respected by some of the Sultan’s of the past, including Mohammed Ben Abdallah al-Khatib, the grandchild of the famous black Sultan, known as the warrior King, Moulay Ismail ibn Sharif. The answer to the identity of the Jews who once lived in the Medina is found in a restored synagogue, truth cannot be hidden.

A number of Jewish families became prominent in commerce and public life there. Among the Jews of Fez of Hispanic origin was Samuel Pallache, who served the Moroccan sultan as a commercial and diplomatic agent in Holland until Pallache's death in 1616. תופרות אלו הן לרוב דור שני או שלישי של התופרות היהודיות ששמם הלך לפניהם בארץ מרוק ! נשות חייל שעזרו בפרנסת המשפחה שלרוב הייתה מרובת ילדים ! עם הכיבוש הצרפתי תופרות למדו מהצרפתים מה שנקרא " ההוט קותור " שזה אומר -- רזי התפירה האיכותית ! ידוע גם שהאנשים האמידים שלחו את בנותיהם ללמוד את רזי מלכת התפירה והרקמה כדי להעשיר את בנותיהם במעלות טובות ולהכשירם למען זה ש-כשיגיע פירקן תשגנה חתן טוב !
וסבתא אסתר ייתאח לבית חמו ע"ה הייתה אומרת את הפתגם הזה !
" עלאם יידיק או כביהום ! יימקין ייזי זמאן יידור עליהום !"
והפרוש :- למד מלכת יד ושמור עליה ! יתכן שיבוא זמן (או מצב ) שיחפש את אותה מלאכה !
ואני הכי מתגעגעת לאותה כותונת שאימא שלי שתחייה הייתה תופרת במו ידה לאחותי ולי פעמיים בשנה ! לערב סדר ראש השנה ולערב ליל הסדר !
הרעיון לסרט הזה נוצר כשהתארחתי אצל חברתי השחקנית ה מהוללה -- אנט כהן ! אז נפלו עיני על מכונת ה-" זינגר" אשר נחה לה כאביזר אנטיקה באחת מפינות הסלון , שם החילותי לספר על "התופרת של- לילת אל עיד " , אתנו הייתה גם השחקנית ה מהוללה -- אליס אליאס , כשהבנתי שגם להן יש אותן זיכרונות כבויים שרוצים לצאת , באופן ספונטני החלטנו ליצור משהוא מזה ! וכך היה !

מנבכי זכרוני ובגעגוע בלתי נלאה לימי ילדותי , "פ- לילאת אל עיד " או "קבאל אל-פארח " מה שנקרא הימים ש-לפני החגים , או לפני אירע , בערך ב- שנות ה-60 המאוחרות או ה- 70 המוקדמות , הינה זה מכבר עלינו לארץ ישראל מארץ מרוק , אימא שתחייה הייתה מזמינה תופרת הביתה ! תופרת ממוצא מרוקאי כדי להכין לנו מלבושים כאמור לקראת החגים ומועדים למניינם ! אותה התופרת יכלה להיות - קרובת משפחה , בת עיר המוצא !? לדוגמה :- אם אנחנו עלינו מהעיר " ספרו " אז התופרת הייתה "ספראווייה" , כמו כן עם ההתאקלמות בארץ ורבות השנים , בין הבאות בשערי ביתנו היו גפ תופרות שמוצאן מ-"קזה-בלנקה , מרקש , בני מאלל , רבט , פאס " ועוד.
התופרות רובן יומרו כי בזמן זה או אחר עבדו בחצר המלך !? לכולן אותה מכונת "זינגר" פופולרית שכל עולה ממרוקו הביא לארץ באמתחתו ! המכונה בתחילה הייתה ידנית , לימים נקבעה על שולחן והייתה ל- רגלית ולבסוף עלה מזלה ואף נהפכה לחשמלית !
תופרות אלו הן לרוב דור שני או שלישי של התופרות היהודיות ששמם הלך לפניהם בארץ מרוק ! נשות חייל שעזרו בפרנסת המשפחה שלרוב הייתה מרובת ילדים ! עם הכיבוש הצרפתי תופרות למדו מהצרפתים מה שנקרא " ההוט קותור " שזה אומר -- רזי התפירה האיכותית ! ידוע גם שהאנשים האמידים שלחו את בנותיהם ללמוד את רזי מלכת התפירה והרקמה כדי להעשיר את בנותיהם במעלות טובות ולהכשירם למען זה ש-כשיגיע פירקן תשגנה חתן טוב !
וסבתא אסתר ייתאח לבית חמו ע"ה הייתה אומרת את הפתגם הזה !
" עלאם יידיק או כביהום ! יימקין ייזי זמאן יידור עליהום !"
והפרוש :- למד מלכת יד ושמור עליה ! יתכן שיבוא זמן (או מצב ) שיחפש את אותה מלאכה !
ואני הכי מתגעגעת לאותה כותונת שאימא שלי שתחייה הייתה תופרת במו ידה לאחותי ולי פעמיים בשנה ! לערב סדר ראש השנה ולערב ליל הסדר !
הרעיון לסרט הזה נוצר כשהתארחתי אצל חברתי השחקנית ה מהוללה -- אנט כהן ! אז נפלו עיני על מכונת ה-" זינגר" אשר נחה לה כאביזר אנטיקה באחת מפינות הסלון , שם החילותי לספר על "התופרת של- לילת אל עיד " , אתנו הייתה גם השחקנית ה מהוללה -- אליס אליאס , כשהבנתי שגם להן יש אותן זיכרונות כבויים שרוצים לצאת , באופן ספונטני החלטנו ליצור משהוא מזה ! וכך היה !

Since her childhood, Neta Elkayam has been surrounded by Moroccan-Jewish music, and as a result, she and the members of her band, as members of the younger generation, have taken a leading role in all that pertains to the Moroccan music in Israel. The ultimate goal of the band is to combine their love of traditional ethnic music, their loyalty to a young, contemporary identity and their commitment to taking the music forward to the next stage with compositions and texts that are relevant to today. The Hawa Jani performance (Here he Comes), is based on a new arrangements of Maghreb –Jewish songs taken from old records that they found in musical archives, alongside new pieces composed by members of the band.
Each member of the band has his/her own musical language which they juxtapose with the musical traditions of their mentors. The songs written by them in Darija, a Moroccan dialect, are an attempt to produce authentic contemporary/traditional songs in Moroccan Arabic based on traditional sources and aimed at the largest possible audiences. It is also an attempt to bring together Maghreb communities, Jews and Muslims, and open up the hearts of listeners whoever they may be.
The performance will host guest artist, Maher Deeba who will sing and play the oud. Deeba is a Jerusalem resident who composes Eastern Arabic music, Andalusian scales and classical maqams (oriental scales). During his career, he has performed alongside Muslim and Jewish artists in Israel and in well-respected festivals around the world.
