LONDON: Opposition Labour lawmaker Sadiq Khan was elected mayor of London with 57 per cent of the vote, final results showed Saturday, making him the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital.

The 45-year-old son of a London bus driver and a seamstress won 1,310,143 votes against 994,614 for his main Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith, 41, the son a wealthy tycoon.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn hailed Khan's win over Conservative Zac Goldsmith, after a bitter campaign in which Prime Minister David Cameron sought to link Khan to Islamic extremists.

“Congratulations Sadiq Khan. Can't wait to work with you to create a London that is fair for all!” Corbyn wrote on Twitter ahead of the publication of final results.

After a negative campaign in which Khan was accused by his rival of sympathising with Islamic extremists, the 45-year-old former human rights lawyer promised in his acceptance speech to be a “mayor for all Londoners”.

“This election was not without controversy and I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division,” he said after the result was declared at City Hall, to applause and cheers from supporters.

“I hope that we will never be offered such a stark choice again. Fear doesn't make us safer, it only makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city."

As he was speaking the candidate for the far-right Britain First party, Paul Golding, who was lined up with the other loosing candidates behind Khan, turned his back.

The local MP for Tooting, Khan succeeds the charismatic Boris Johnson, an advocate of Britain's departure from the European Union who is seen as one of the favourites to succeed Cameron.

Other mayors including Anne Hidalgo in Paris and Bill de Blasio in New York quickly congratulated Khan.

“Sending congratulations to London's new mayor and fellow affordable housing advocate Sadiq Khan,” de Blasio said.

Corbyn, who has faced opposition from centrists in his party since becoming leader last year, insisted his party had “hung on” and surpassed expectations.

“All across England last night we were getting predictions that we were going to lose councils. We didn't,” he said.

“We hung on and we grew support in a lot of places. “With results in from 110 out of 124 councils, Labour had 55, down one, and 1,176 seats, down 25.

Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives had control of an unchanged 30 councils and 650 seats, down 23.

A BBC projection suggested that Labour would win 31 percent of the vote share nationally compared to 30 percent for the Conservatives.

“The Labour Party is in serious trouble, although the likely election of a Labour candidate to be London mayor will distract from that,” said Matthew Goodwin, politics professor at Kent University.

The voting day dubbed “Super Thursday” in which 45 million Britons were eligible to vote came after a bitter few weeks of sniping between the Conservatives and Labour.

Corbyn set up an inquiry into anti-Semitism and racism in Labour after former London mayor Ken Livingstone was suspended for claiming Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler supported Zionism.

Several other Labour politicians were also suspended.

Cameron is also grappling with deep splits in his party ahead of the June 23 referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union.

Pakistanis excel to the top when provided the opportunities. From one of America's richest self-made men (Shahid Khan) to the mayor of London (Sadiq Khan). Just the right environment and opportunity is all they need. Some lessons for the government of Pakistan.

This news is a big boost for the 1.2 million British Pakistani community. Especially those living in the mill towns (Kashmiris) who are slowly rising and improving their economics. Positive news overall.

Dear Sadiq, Congratulations on your success. It is a great honour for Muslims also. I hope, you will use your influence to explain to the English people that Islam is a peaceful religion, and also, that your will explain to Muslims to be more open-minded and respect the rules of the host country as far as it is possible, to keep peace at all times under all circumstances.

@DAWN, please publish. From music (Zayn Malik) to sports (Moeen Ali, Amir Khan) and politics (Sadiq Khan, Sajid Javed), British Pakistanis excel in all different fields.

Pakistanis earn the top positions wherever they go, just if they have the chance and opportunities. Another example would be Shahid Khan, one of the 400 richest Americans, who is entirely self-made. Pakistan's government should take cues from these success stories.

Sadiq Khan's election will be a boost to the British Pakistani community, particularly those living in the formerly deprived mill towns who are slowly climbing the path to education and economic prosperity. I won't be a surprised if some 50 years down the track, the prime minister of UK is a Pakistani.

This is called democracy in its true sense.

Can we think to elect a Mayor from non-Muslim Community? No!

But Sadiq Khan not only bagged Muslim votes but also got tremendous support from non- Muslims votes.

We as a Muslim should not be succumbed to our fragile ego. Non- Muslims also can do the best and helpful to administer state's affairs. All human beings irrespective of cast, creed and colour are equal in the eyes of law. Pakistan people should show broad mindedness and take initiative.
Mr. Sadiq your victory is the winning of progressive, liberal non-prejudiced forces. Congratulation!

Very good statement, Muslim countries also same way elect capable minority candidates in important positions including head of state, when this happens that will be golden day for Islam and humanity. All communities irrespective of their faith living together with peace and harmony is need of the time as science and technology brought all humans close to each other, hatred intolerance and extremism should be discarded by all irrespective of their belief.

Sadiq khan's election as mayor of London is the manifestation of the Moslim talent and success in the face of negative and anti- Moslim propaganda in the West.Asian Moslems especially those of Pakistan origin who have successfully integrated into the host countries' politico social systems have the potentials to rise to any and all levels of state structures. Thousands of those engaged in professional and political fields have been contributing in the economic, social and scientific development of western societies. Talent flourishes if equal opportunities are provided negating favoritism and nepotism and encouraging merit. Will Pakistan follow this line?

The irony is very stark.

A Muslim can become a Mayor of a Western City, an MP or a European Parliament, or even Governor of a State or Province in North America, perhaps even a PM or President of a Western nation. But a Palestinian cannot achieve the same in any Arab country, but can in Israel. A Syrian cannot become an MP in Lebanon or Iraq or any other Arab country. A Muslim cannot run for any public office, or even claim citizenship in any Arab country, no matter how many generations his family toiled in the sands of Arabia!

In that regard, I will always have more respect for Western democratic system - no matter how imperfect, than any dynastic, closed and repressive regimes in the Arab world. Some of which have been blessed with enormous wealth but have done nothing to share it with their poor neighbors. Sad, but true.

No chance for any foreigner, much less a fell0w-Muslim tgaining citizenship in any Gulf country, no matter how long you or your family lived there. Much less be able to run for public office. While the world is moving forward,

I am an Indian Muslim, proud of my identity and my roots. But time and again I am ashamed of the absolute hypocrisy of the Muslim community around the world. Wherever we are in a majority, we insist on Islamic law, ensure preferential treatment of Muslims, and silence, either by word or sword, any talk about secularism. But wherever we are in a minority, we scream about equality, racism, marginalisation, multiculturalism and what not. The same people who are feeling "proud" of Mr Khan will also never accept a non Muslim in any elected position of power in a Muslim majority country (the key word here being 'elected', and not a nominated member). The same people who blame America and the West for all the problems in the Muslim world, will happily run there when they get a visa to live or work. Honestly, why are Muslims so hypocritical? It is only for this reason that we have become a laughing stock and a subject of ridicule in the world.

Dont understand why religious identity is highlighted so much...!! is it because of religious identity he has become mayor or because of his ability ? why no Islamic countries taking example of such vibrant secular democratic step of letting eligible one to lead city while not looking at his faith. it's a sad story that his abilities are not discussed while his ethnic and religious identity are matter of discussion. and sorry to those readers, insisting that's its good for muslims and pakistanis. he is for every one living in london. please keep this in mind. he is not there to do favor to specific nationalities or faith... stop looking world from prism of religion.

Why did the other candidate turn his back during Sadiq's speech? Is that a rule?

@Anuj , can completely understand your anguish, nobody is going berserk over the victory, he has nothing to do with Pakistan, he is a British national with UK passport and I can bet that he has never visited his parents birth country so that takes care of your one point of anguish, secondly if some people start claiming such personalities that does not speak for the whole nation. Lastly, what about the religious and cultural divide in your own country. There is a very old saying that sitting in a glass house do not throw stones at others. Have a nice day reading Dawn news, it really has some very interesting articles on almost all subjects.
