Video on Tantalum capacitors. I haven't had much luck with these but I'm gonna give it another go on selling them. They should be worth a lot of money but I didn't have any luck selling them the first time. If anyone has any advise or ideas like and comment.

Scrapping computers for cash. I want to help others recognize the different shapes and sizes of TANTALUM capacitors. The U.S is all about Ceramic capacitors due to its compatibility and it's a cheaper resource. Today China pretty much owns the Tantalum market and now produces Vi Shay tantalum capacitors. In this video, I describe what a capacitor is and it's use on circuit boards and then compare the difference between ceramic and tantalum capacitors. I cannot stress how rare and valuable tantalum capacitors are and that they should be removed and set aside for its precious metal content is even more rare than gold. Tantalum is a very rare precious metal that is in high demand and on short supply worldwide. These little mustard colored capacitors should not be discarded as they they are worth $80 a pound.

This is why polarity is emphasized so strongly when it comes to tantalum capacitors. Even a relatively tiny 33µF 16V solid tantalum capacitor can do a lot of damage if the polarity is wrong.
Even briefly applying a relatively small reverse voltage (in this video, I was applying slightly over 1 volt, that's it) will cause tantalum capacitors to fail, and their main failure mode is a dead short. I was pumping ~4A into this at 1V, so 4W of heat.
How could 4W cause that much energy release? Well, it didn't, at least not directly. Tantalum capacitors are made out of solid tantalum covered in magnesium dioxide. When you get them hot enough, magnesium dioxide and tantalum ignite and undergo a highly exothermic reaction similar to thermite. The magnesium dioxide acts as an oxidizer and the tantalum is the fuel. THAT's where all that heat and fire and flame came from.

Tantalum (
/ˈtæntələm/ TAN-təl-əm) is a chemical element with the symbol Ta and atomic number 73. Previously known as tantalium, the name comes from Tantalus, a character from Greek mythology. Tantalum is a rare, hard, blue-gray, lustrous transition metal that is highly corrosion resistant. It is part of the refractory metals group, which are widely used as minor component in alloys. The chemical inertness of tantalum makes it a valuable substance for laboratory equipment and a substitute for platinum, but its main use today is in tantalum capacitors in electronic equipment such as mobile phones, DVD players, video game systems and computers. Tantalum, always together with the chemically similar niobium, occurs in the minerals tantalite, columbite and coltan (a mix of columbite and tantalite).
Tantalum was discovered in Sweden in 1802 by Anders Ekeberg. One year earlier, Charles Hatchett had discovered the element columbium. In 1809, the English chemist William Hyde Wollaston compared the oxides derived from both columbium—columbite, with a density 5.918 g/cm3, and tantalum—tantalite, with a density 7.935 g/cm3, and concluded that the two oxides, despite their difference in measured density, were identical. He decided to keep the name tantalum. After Friedrich Wöhler confirmed these results, it was thought that columbium and tantalum were the same element. This conclusion was disputed in 1846 by the German chemist Heinrich Rose, who argued that there were two additional elements in the tantalite sample, and he named them after the children of Tantalus: niobium (from Niobe, the goddess of tears), and pelopium (from Pelops). The supposed element "pelopium" was later identified as a mixture of tantalum and niobium, and it was found that the niobium was identical to the columbium already discovered in 1801 by Hatchett.

Name Origin From king Tantalus of Greek mythology. "Tantalum" in different languages. Sources Chiefly occurs in the mineral tantalite [(Fe, Mn) Ta2O6] and euxenite (as well as samarskite and fergusonite). Always found with niobium. Tantalum ores are mined in Australia, Brazil, Eqypt, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria, Portugal, Malaysia and Thailand. Around 840 tons are produced annually. Uses Used to produce metals that have high melting points, are strong and have good ductility. Alloyed with other metals, it is also used in making carbide tools for metalworking equipment and in the production of superalloys for jet engine components, chemical process equipment, nuclear reactors, and missile parts. Because of its ductility, tantalum can be drawn into fine wires or filaments, which are used for evaporating metals such as aluminium. Tantalum pentoxide is used in capacitors, condensers, cutting tools, vacuum tube filaments and in camera lenses to increase refracting power. Because it is totally immune to the action of body liquids and is nonirritating it is widely used in making surgical appliances. -

I cannot stress how rare and valuable tantalum capacitors are and that they should be removed and set aside for its precious metal content is even more rare than gold. Tantalum is a very rare precious metal that is in high demand and on short supply worldwide. These little mustard colored capacitors should not be discarded as they they are worth $80 a pound.

Surface mountable tantalum capacitors are manufactured in the following way. The components of the cathode are connected to the cathode terminal with the help of silver epoxy resin. The components of the anode are soldered onto the supporting electrode. The stringer is cut off. The components are glued together with special silver glue. The chip is then moulded with the help of epoxy resin. This ensures the optimum capacitor geometry. It can then be easily mounted onto a circuit board. A code is printed on the moulded capacitor. It contains the information on its rated capacity and voltage. After that, such critical parameters as its capacity, leakage current and equivalent series resistance are tested. The second variety of capacitor packaging is manufactured in the following way. The anode conductor is soldered to the lead of the anode and cut of from the stringer. The carrier terminal of the cathode is soldered to the silver plated body of the capacitor while the latter is being dipped into a soldering bath. Then the capacitor is filled with epoxy encapsulant. It is placed inside a drying oven to solidify. Similarly to the previous case, it is then marked and all the parameters are tested.It is the capacitors with SMD packaging that manifest the primary advantages of tantalum capacitors. At the same time they are more compact and durable.
