Hermopolis Magna or simply Hermopolis or Hermopolis Megale (Greek: Ἑρμοῦ πόλις μεγάλη) or Hermupolis is the site of ancient Khmun, and is located near the modern Egyptian town of El Ashmunein (from Coptic: Ϣⲙⲟⲩⲛⲉⲓⲛ Shmounein) in Al Minya governorate.
Khmun, the Ancient Egyptian name of the city, means "eight-town", after the Ogdoad, a group of eight deities who represented the world before creation. The name survived into Coptic as Ϣⲙⲟⲩⲛⲉⲓⲛ (Shmounein), from which the modern name, El Ashmunein, is derived. In Greek, the city was called Hermopolis, after Hermes, whom the Greeks identified with Thoth, because the city was the main cult centre of Thoth, the god of magic, healing and wisdom, and the patron of scribes. Thoth was associated in the same way with the Semitic Eshmun. Inscriptions at the temple call the god "The Lord of Eshmun".

The Hyksos have invaded and cut off multiple trade routes! It's up to us to defeat this enemy by building a command center at Khmun. Out of all the missions so far, Khmun is the strangest of them all. The mission briefing also consists of red herrings designed to throw players off, so don't be fooled by them. Despite what the mission briefing states, you don't need a huge army here to defend any cities. The first troop request just requires an academy trained archer fort fully staffed as soon as possible, even though the mission briefing wants a massive army (which is impossible because of limited funds and almost no exports). You are also told cities will request stuff from you, but apart from obvious troop requests, no city will ask anything from you (there is a random request for Potte...

As the series of videos reveals how profound ancient knowledge inherited from Egypt has been encoded in units of measurement, in famous works of art, in the desi...
September 24th, 2016 9:00 am First session – “Breaking temporal boundaries”: Introduction – Laurel Bestock (Brown University) 9:10 am Josef Wegner (University of Pennsylvania) – The Archaeology of Messy Politics: Recent Evidence on Egypt’s Second Intermediate Period Many scholars have observed the inadequacies of the long-engrained division of Egyptian history into the Kingdoms and Intermediate Periods. Compartmentalizing long eras of cultural and social change under these single overarching terms fundamentally detracts from the understanding the dynamic political and social changes that span these large historical phases. Egypt’s Second Intermediate Period (ca. 1700-1550 BCE) is a phase where historical and archaeological evidence continues to challenge us. Standard interpretations of...

Damn those Nubians! They're striking deep into Egyptian territory, and it's up to us to force them back to the South by building a cluster of forts at Heh. Heh is one of the tougher missions you'll meet, mainly because the Mausoleum you need to build is very hard to place and your city will need to be rearranged to fit it in. Also, the arid climate means your city has to be very close to the water's edge and the map size means much of your city will need to be pretty close to other industries so desirability needs to be kept up high to prevent houses devolving. Luckily, the invasions aren't going to start until you defend a few Egyptian cities. Build some warships from imported wood at Dakhla Oasis and get exporting Luxury Goods and Gems to Dakhla and Byblos. Import a very small amount o...
