Zak Penn, writer of THE AVENGERS, X-MEN, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, shares his thoughts on writing action adventure with Robert McKee in this interview segment from Robert McKee's Storylogue.
The Avengers writer Zak Penn joins the Insiders to talk about writing action blockbusters, and his documentary Atari: Game Over. Writing for the Marvel universe, his work on The Incredible Hulk, The Last Action Hero, Suspect Zero, and his ongoing collaborations with the brilliant Werner Herzog are shared. How to write in Hollywood, his own curiosities and passions--including mining for the world’s worst video game for Atari: Game Over, and working on big and low budget movies is shared with host Sebastian Twardosz for the Insider.

Zak Penn’s career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and most recently, THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.
Penn’s shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director’s attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn’s second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan.
In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn recently directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.

Zak Penn's writing credits might have resulted in less than killer movies (X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk), but we're not inclined to hold that against him, because his "Story By" credits are pretty cool: X2, The Avengers... The Last Action Hero (which Christina liked. She was 10, okay??). And a good handle on story is exactly what this complicated, mythology-heavy novel needs.

Zak Penn (born 1968) is an American screenwriter and director. Penn wrote and directed Incident at Loch Ness, The Grand, and co-wrote the script for X-Men: The Last Stand. With Michael Karnow, Penn is the co-creator of Alphas.
Penn graduated from Wesleyan University in 1990. His screenplay for PCU was based on his experiences at the Eclectic Society house. He is the son of New York businessman and lawyer Arthur Penn, who led the acquisition of the Capital Markets Assurance Corporation from Citicorp.
The screenplay for Last Action Hero, for which he received a Story By credit with Adam Leff, was nominated for a 1993 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Screenplay; however, it lost to the Indecent Proposal script. Other films that he has been involved in writing include The Avengers, Inspector Gadget, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Elektra. Penn wrote early drafts of both Hulk and The Incredible Hulk.
Penn is also a jury member for the digital studio Filmaka, a platform for undiscovered filmmakers to show their work to industry professionals.

Robert McKee, born 1941, is a creative writing instructor who is widely known for his popular "Story Seminar", which he developed when he was a professor at the University of Southern California. McKee is the author of a "screenwriters' bible" called Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting. Many of Hollywood's active screenwriters claim him as an inspiration.[citation needed]
Rather than simply handling "mechanical" aspects of fiction technique such as plot or dialogue taken individually, McKee examines the narrative structure of a work and what makes the story compelling or not. This could work equally as well as an analysis of any other genre or form of narrative, whether in screenplay or any other form, and could also encompass nonfiction works as long as they attempt to "tell a story".
Robert McKee is among the most widely known screenwriting lecturers. McKee's former students include 36 Academy Award winners, 164 Emmy Award winners, 19 WGA (Writers Guild of America) Award winners and 16 DGA (Directors Guild of America) Award winners (all participated in McKee's course before or after winning their award; not all were awarded for writing). He was profiled by Bob Simon of 60 Minutes for CBS News, and CNN recently did a profile and review of McKee and the Story Seminar. The notable writers and actors such as Geoffrey Rush, Paul Haggis, Akiva Goldsman, William Goldman, Joan Rivers, Rob Row, David Bowie, Kirk Douglas, John Cleese, Steve Pressfield, among many others have taken his seminar.

Zak Penn’s career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and most recently, THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.
Penn’s shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director’s attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn’s second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan.
In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn recently directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.

Welcome to the road to X-Men: Apocalypse, a Collider Heroes Special hosted by Jon Schnepp; with our special panel Amy Dallen and Robert Meyer Burnett.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27th so we thought we’d go through the feature films that have brought us to this point. Let’s get into the way-back machine and exit in the year 2000. July 14th brought us the very first film simply titled X-men.
X2: X-Men United came out May 2, 2003, and we had a bigger world to play in, after the success of the first film. Bryan Singer returned with a sure hand in directing this second film, expanding the storylines of Wolverine and his brutal origin by the hands of Stryker.
May 26, 2006 saw the release of X-Men The Last Stand, this one without Bryan Singer, who left to go direct Superman Returns. This film is directed by Brett Rattner, with a script by Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn. This third installment had a cure as the central story, with a division and battle once more between Professor x and Magneto, as they fight to stop this cure from wiping them out.
May 1st, 2009 saw X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first solo film for Hugh Jackman as this character, featuring the century spanning life of Logan and his brother Sabretooth aka Victor Creed played by Liev Schriber. We see Logan working with Team X, with Wade Wilson, in his early career with Stryker, and then he leaves, and has his own life until Victor shows up to ruin it all. We then got lots of strange inconsistent scenes with Gambit, Blob, and a Deadpool with his mouth sewn shut. WTF?
May 25th, 2011 was the release date of X-Men: First Class. This reboot/prequel to the first three X-Men films really helped reestablish the X-Men brand, by throwing them back into the sixties, and recasting the main duo of Prof X and Magneto with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, with Mystique played by Jennifer Lawrence.
The Wolverine came out on July 26th, 2013, and followed Logan to Japan as he tried to escape from his tormented nightmares involving the ghost of Jean Grey. Wolverine accepts the offer from a man he saved during WW2, and now can give Logan what he desires, death by the destruction of his healing gene. Things don’t go as planed and ends up with Wolverine not fighting a group of Ninjas, and eventually battling the Silver Samurai.
X-Men: Days of Future Past opened May 23rd, 2014 was the return to greatness, with Bryan Singer making an epic that combined his original cast with the new First Class cast. The main cast travels back and forth from the horrible future to the 1970s in an effort to save all of mutantkind. This movie had it all, both sets of X-Men, time travel and the ability to fix giant mistakes that happened in the previous movies, as well as getting the Setinels properly in the X-universe.

According to producer and co-writer Simon Kinberg, he still believes there is room for a Fantastic Four sequel. Speaking to Den of Geek at the junket for X-Men: Apocalypse, Kinberg made no secret of his feelings about the 2015 film and its dramatic departure from the comics, saying they want to make a new, brighter sequel to Fantastic Four.
Joe Pytka, the director of the 1996 film Space Jam, unleashed some strong words in opposition to the newly announced sequel for his original movie. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Pytka thinks Warner Bros should stop with the sequel, saying: Don’t do it. It’s doomed. Space Jam 2 will be directed by Justin Lin with LeBron James tapped to star. The movie will be written by Bad Words screenwriter Andrew Dodge. No release date has been set.

Derek Connolly, the co-writer of Jurassic World, has been hired to work on Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to Legendary’s Jaegars vs. monsters pic directed by Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro remains involved with the project as one of the producers but is not directing the sequel; that role went to Steven DeKnight, the showrunner of season 1 of Netflix’s Daredevil. The most recent drafts of the script have been worked on by del Toro, Zak Penn and Jon Spaihts. While plot details are being kept under wraps, THR’s report mentions that it is unclear if Connolly is doing a page-one rewrite or simply a polish.
Variety is reporting that Brenda Chapman, who directed the Academy Award-winning animated film Brave, will make her live-action directing debut in Come Away, a prequel to Alice in Wonderland AND Peter Pan. The premise of the movie supposes that Alice and Peter were brother and sister who had to deal with their older brother perishing in an accident and their parents’ despair over the tragedy — leading them ultimately journey to Wonderland for Alice and Neverland for Peter.
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the action-thriller The Accountant with Warrior helmer Gavin O’Connor directing Ben Affleck in a story about a mild-mannered accountant who moonlights as a lethal assassin. The film also stars Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow. The Accountant opens in theaters on October 14th.
In an exclusive clip found only on Collider.com, Paramount has released a new clip from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. In it, we see the introduction of Casey Jones, played by Stephen Amell, meeting Meagan Fox’s April O’ Neil as he saves her from armed assailants known as the Foot Clan. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows also stars Will Arnett, Brian Tee, Tyler Perry, Brittany Ishibashi, Laura Linney and William Fichtner. It hits theaters on June 3rd.

X-Men: The Last Stand is a 2006 British-American superhero film, based on the X-Men superhero team introduced in Marvel Comics. The film, distributed by 20th Century Fox, is the sequel to 2003's X2 and the third installment in the X-Men film series. It was directed by Brett Ratner, written by Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn, and features an ensemble cast, including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin,Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Shawn Ashmore, Aaron Stanford, Vinnie Jones, and Patrick Stewart. The film's script is loosely based on two X-Men comic book story arcs: "The Dark Phoenix Saga" by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne, and "Gifted" by writer Joss Whedon and artist John Cassaday, with a plot that revolves around a "mutant cure" that causes serious repercussions among mutants and humans, and on the resurrection of Jean Grey.
