Soviet MiG-21F-13/PF with K-13 missiles "Atoll"
The Vympel K-13 (NATO reporting name: AA-2 "Atoll") is a short-range, infrared homing air-to-air missile developed by the Soviet Union. It is similar in appearance and function to the American AIM-9 Sidewinder from which it was reverse-engineered.

This Unexploded Sidewinder Missile Got Stuck in a MiG-17 and Mailed to the Soviets
The American Sidewinder missile was unlike any other at the time. The Soviet Union and China envied the weapon’s capabilities, as it allowed a U.S.-armed Taiwan to successfully take down MiG fighter aircraft by the end of 1958
However, their jealousy did not last long after one of the American-made missiles failed to detonate when it met a Chinese plane. Safely lodged intact and sticking out of the fuselage, the Sidewinder would soon be delivered to the Soviets. By reverse-engineering the weapon, the USSR would make it accessible to the Warsaw Pact, enraging the Americans.
Not content with their initial intellectual theft, the Soviets would later launch a daring espionage mission to avoid inventing upgrades to the missile themselves...

When Russia Stole a US Aim-9 Sidewinder Missile
On October 22, 1967, a Mercedes-Benz arrives outside the Neuburg Air Base in West Germany. In the car was Manfred Ramminger, a German architect who was basically a Russian spy, with two more people. In the evening, Ramminger took advantage of thick fog, as well as absent-minded security guards, and sneaked into the Neuburg Air Base. From the base's weapons depot, he quickly loaded an operational Aim-9 Sidewinder missile onto a wheelbarrow and pushed it down the entire runway to his Mercedes-Benz. He then reached his home, where disassembled the Aim-9. He then mailed the disassembled missile to Moscow, and the post charged him only $79. The Soviets reverse-engineered it, and within 7 years, the Soviet Union introduced the R-13M missile.

ATOLL: The Soviet Sidewinder Is More Interesting Than You Might Think
Ask most aviation enthusiasts about the Soviet Atoll missile and they’ll likely tell you the same things. It is a copy of the AIM-9B Sidewinder. Most of us also know that the original missile that was copied by the Soviets was fired by a Taiwanese F-86 Sabre in the Taiwan Straits. It hit the MiG-17 it was targeting, but the warhead failed to detonate.
These things are both true. But there’s more to the Atoll than just a story of fortunate acquisition and smart reverse engineering. Although it started as a very close copy of the Sidewinder, it was not exactly the same and, like the Sidewinder, it developed along its own path. Unlike the Sidewinder, that development path was terminated as the Soviet Union replaced it with an indigenous design to fit with other aspects of their tactical avia...

Unlike the Sidewinder, that development path was terminated as the Soviet Union replaced it with an indigenous design to fit with other aspects of their tactical aviation concept.
I believe that understanding the Atoll is important if we’re to understand the history of air-to-air combat in the 1960s and 1970s. In this video, I explore its history, the myths of its origin and its legacy. I hope you enjoy it!
