Brazil (i/brəˈzɪl/; Portuguese: Brasil [bɾaˈziw] ), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil, listen ), is the largest sovereign state in both South America and the Latin American region. It is the world's fifth-largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world, and the only one in the Americas.
Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km (4,655 mi). It borders all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chile and occupies 47.3 percent of the continent of South America. Its Amazon River basin includes a vast tropical forest, home to diverse wildlife, a variety of ecological systems, and extensive natural resources spanning numerous protected habitats. This unique environmental heritage makes Brazil one of 17 megadiverse countries, and is the subject of significant global interest and debate regarding deforestation and environmental protection.

During the presidency of Lula Da Silva, billions of dollars in bribes were taken to allow construction companies to overcharge the government-owned oil company, Petrobras. Now, Brazil has corruption, but it's actually pretty good for a developing country. But the people of Brazil have come to expect more, and they have been left down. Current president, Dilma Rousseff, was chairwoman of Petrobras during the period of corruption, but no one knows whether Lula or Dilma were involved or aware. But Lula was under investigation before Rousseff appointed him to be her chief of staff, a move that means he can no longer be prosecuted by a normal court. I think this whole thing speaks very highly of Brazil. A reckoning had to come, and I'm pleased the citizens are holding the government account...
http://democracynow.org - Brazil’s Senate has forged ahead with impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff, despite an earlier move by the interim house speaker to derail the process. The previous house speaker, Eduardo Cunha, had led the bid to oust Rousseff, before he himself was suspended over corruption. On Monday, his replacement, Waldir Maranhão, sought to annul the lower house’s vote in favor of impeachment charges, citing procedural flaws. But the speaker apparently reversed course in the middle of the night, releasing a statement reversing his decision, without explanation. The Senate appears poised to vote Wednesday on whether to put Rousseff on trial; if a majority side against her, she would be suspended. We speak with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Gree...

Brazil's brutal recession is deepening with no immediate relief in sight. The country's GDP shrank in the first quarter- though it wasn't as bad as previously thought. Reports say the heavy government spending to impeach President Dilma Rousseff helped cushion the blow. But that respite vanishes when one looks at the jobless rate which has hit its highest level since 2012. Looking at growth year-on-year reveals a worse picture - the country's GDP has now shrunk nearly five and half percent. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development expects the recession to continue well into 2017. For more on Brazil's economy, CCTV America's Rachelle Akuffo spoke to global economics analyst Saruhan Hatipoglu.

Brazil has been disappointing for while, even with some of the best players at their disposal, they have failed to live up to the hype. However, under new coach Tite, the Canarinho's have been impressive and in their World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia, the host thrashed the visitors 5-0 at the Rio Grande do Norte. The five-time World Cup winners had the points wrapped up by the break thanks to first-half goals from Neymar, Coutinho, Filipe Luis, Gabriel Jesus, and Roberto Firmino rounded off the scoring 15 minutes from time. Barcelona superstar Neymar's 49th international goal in his 73rd appearance took him one clear of Zico on Brazil's all-time topscorer's list. Four US swimmers landed in hot water when they were accused of lying to Rio police earlier this month. The four men, including Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, were publicly criticized earlier in the month for lying about an interaction at a Rio gas station in which then men claim they were robbed. The situation has been complicated by evidence that casts doubt on Rio Police's version of the nights events. While police maintain that there was no robbery or gun pointing, closed-circuit video speaking to people and then exchanging money with them, which could corroborate the swimmer's story that they were held and then asked to pay in order to leave the gas station. A witness first insisted that there was no gun when speaking with the press, then later appeared to change his story to one that m...

Four months into her second term in office, President Dilma Roussef faces a political and economic crisis described by politicians and commentators as “the most serious” in over two decades. A stagnated economy combined with a demoralizing corruption scandal involving the state oil company Petrobras, has led to what is perhaps the weakest executive government branch in Brazil since the return to democracy in the mid 1980’s.
In this episode of The Global African, we hear from Dr. Carl Hart, neuroscientist at Columbia University, on how the Brazilian government has implemented repressive drug laws that ultimately repeat the same mistakes made in the U.S. - In the second half of the show we cover new changes to the Rwandan Constitution that could mean that President Kagame ends up staying on until 2034. What is driving the push for this term extension?
