Exploring the abandoned railway in Gillingham
This railway comes of the main line east of
Gillingham station, by the level crossing (joins facing the coast). It then goes in a large cutting down towards the river, over a bridge over the new road, then that is now where it finishes. It used to go into
Gillingham docks (which has now been demolished for new houses to be built on the site)
. In the 80s the railway went even further than this, it connected up with the tramway at
Chatham Dockyard. This railway was last used it the 90s when the nucular waste that had been dumped on
St Mary's island was being cleared so that they could build houses there.
