This short film examines some possible policy responses to the shortage of affordable housing supply in the UK. It argues that a large increase in house building is needed, much of which should be new dwellings that are affordable to rent by households on low incomes. It explains the use in other countries of policies that link initiatives to increase housing production, ensure that housing is of good quality and affordable and is allocated to those in need of decent housing. It argues that policy changes are needed in the UK and suggests new ways to promote an increase in the supply of affordable housing.
The film builds on more than twenty five years of evidence-based housing and planning policy research at the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research. It has been supported by an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account award and has been used to provoke debate and inspire new ways of thinking about housing policy. It has been shown at events in Cambridge and London attended by politicians, civil servants and housing professionals.

Koepnick says, "What we're seeing now is that it's gotten worse than it's ever been and almost three-fourths of low income New Yorkers are paying more than half of their monthly income towards rent."

Metro Vancouver's many attributes make it a highly desirable place to live and invest. Unfortunately, that makes housing, whether rental or ownership, unaffordable for many of the region's citizens. The need to think outside the box about lower-cost residential options has become an urgent priority. Renowned international housing expert Dr. Avi Friedman speaks about what's making housing unaffordable in Metro Vancouver -- as well as the direct and indirect contributions that affordable housing makes to communities. He describes potential housing strategies, including examples of local and international projects, that offer innovative affordable housing solutions for this region.
Keynote biography: Avi Friedman, Professor, McGill University School of Architecture
Dr. Avi Friedman received his Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Town Planning from the Israel Institute of Technology, his Master's Degree from McGill University, and his Doctorate from the University of Montréal. In 1988, he founded the Affordable Homes Program at the McGill School of Architecture where he teaches. He is known nationally and internationally for his housing innovation and in particular for the Grow Home and Next Home designs. He is the author of ten books and was a syndicated columnist for the CanWest Chain of daily newspapers. He is a practicing architect and the recipient of numerous awards including the Manning Innovation Award and the United Nations World Habitat Award. In the year 2000 he was selected by Wallpaper magazine as 1 of 10 people from around the world "most likely to change the way we live".
Moderator biography: Peter Ladner, Fellow, SFU Centre for Dialogue
Peter Ladner is a Fellow of the SFU Centre for Dialogue, promoting the project "Planning Cities as if Food Matters." His book The Urban Food Revolution: Changing the Way We Feed Cities, was published by New Society Publishers in fall, 2011. He is a former Vancouver City Councillor, Metro Vancouver director, and publisher of Business in Vancouver newspaper.

The Futurehouse walling system is a structural, pre-fabricated walling panel with an expanded polystyrene core encapsulated in high tensile steel galvanised wire mesh. The durable insulated Ikhaya FutureHouse walling system allows properties to be cool in summer and warm in winter thus saving money on energy bills. It is also quicker to build with.
The system is NHBRC registered and carries an Agrément certificate. The panels are strong and durable and can be used both internally and externally with a fire resistant corrugated polystyrene core with shotcrete and plastered mini columns on either side of the core.

In December 2012, students, faculty, leadership and alumni from Parsons The New School for Design (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons), the Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy (http://www.newschool.edu/milano) at The New School for Public Engagement (http://www.newschool.edu/public-engagement), local government agencies, and the community came to celebrate the dedication of Empowerhouse (http://parsit.parsons.edu).
This highly energy efficient, environmentally sustainable, affordable housing for DC Habitat was developed over several years by over 200 students at Parsons, Milano, and Stevens. The house was designed as an entry in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, a sustainable building competition. The first house in Washington, D.C. to meet Passive House standards for energy use, Empowerhouse took first place in the competition's Affordability category, and now is a new model for Habitat for Humanity moving forward.

Affordable housing is a term used to describe dwelling units whose total housing costs for either rented or purchased unit, are deemed affordable to those that have a median household income. In Australia, the National Affordable Housing Summit Group developed their definition of affordable housing as housing which is "reasonably adequate in standard and location for lower or middle income households and does not cost so much that a household is unlikely to be able to meet other basic needs on a sustainable basis." In the United Kingdom affordable housing includes "social rented and intermediate housing, provided to specified eligible households whose needs are not met by the market." Most of the literature on affordable housing refers to a number of forms that exist along a continuum - from emergency shelters, to transitional housing, to non-market rental (also known as social or subsidized housing), to formal and informal rental, indigenous housing and ending with affordable home ownership.

It argues that a large increase in house building is needed, much of which should be new dwellings that are affordable to rent by households on low incomes. It explains the use in other countries of policies that link initiatives to increase housing production, ensure that housing is of good quality and affordable and is allocated to those in need of decent housing. It argues that policy changes are needed in the UK and suggests new ways to promote an increase in the supply of affordable housing.

Metro Vancouver's many attributes make it a highly desirable place to live and invest. Unfortunately, that makes housing, whether rental or ownership, unaffordable for many of the region's citizens. The need to think outside the box about lower-cost residential options has become an urgent priority. Renowned international housing expert Dr. Avi Friedman speaks about what's making housing unaffordable in Metro Vancouver -- as well as the direct and indirect contributions that affordable housing makes to communities. He describes potential housing strategies, including examples of local and international projects, that offer innovative affordable housing solutions for this region.
Keynote biography: Avi Friedman, Professor, McGill University School of Architecture
Dr. Avi Friedman received his Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Town Planning from the Israel Institute of Technology, his Master's Degree from McGill University, and his Doctorate from the University of Montréal. In 1988, he founded the Affordable Homes Program at the McGill School of Architecture where he teaches. He is known nationally and internationally for his housing innovation and in particular for the Grow Home and Next Home designs. He is the author of ten books and was a syndicated columnist for the CanWest Chain of daily newspapers. He is a practicing architect and the recipient of numerous awards including the Manning Innovation Award and the United Nations World Habitat Award. In the year 2000 he was selected by Wallpaper magazine as 1 of 10 people from around the world "most likely to change the way we live".

Peter Ladner is a Fellow of the SFU Centre for Dialogue, promoting the project "Planning Cities as if Food Matters."
