In Peru, the people directly elect a head of state (the president) as well as a legislature. The president is elected by the people for a five-year term. The unicameral Congress (Congreso) has 130 members, also elected for a five-year term by proportional representation. Peru has a multi-party system, which effectively bars one party from becoming the sole influence in a decision-making process. As such, parties must work with one another to form coalition governments. The whole election process is held by the National Jury of Elections and the National Office of Electoral Processes.

Peru (i/pəˈruː/; Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw [pɪɾʊw];Aymara: Piruw [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú ), is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an extremely biodiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.
Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies. Ideas of political autonomy later spread throughout Spanish America and Peru gained its independence, which was formally proclaimed in 1821. After the battle of Ayacucho, three years after proclamation, Peru ensured its independence. After achieving independence, the country remained in recession and kept a low military profile until an economic rise based on the extraction of raw and maritime materials struck the country, which ended shortly before the war of the Pacific. Subsequently, the country has undergone changes in government from oligarchic to democratic systems. Peru has gone through periods of political unrest and internal conflict as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.
Keiko Sofía Fujimori Higuchi (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈkeiko soˈfia fuxiˈmori iˈɣ̞utʃ͡i]) (Japanese: 藤森 恵子, Fujimori Keiko Japanese: [ɸúʥimoɺi kéːko] or Japanese: [ɸuʥimoɾi kéːko]; born May 25, 1975) is a Peruvian Fujimorista politician, daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori and Susana Higuchi. She served as First Lady, from 1994 to 2000, after her parents divorced, becoming the youngest First Lady in the history of the Americas. She then became a member of the Peruvian legislature. Fujimori leads the center-right party Fuerza Popular, and lost her bid for the presidency in the 2011 Peruvian election runoff of June 5, 2011.
Keiko Fujimori graduated from Peru's Catholic School Colegio Sagrados Corazones Recoleta (Recoleta Academy of the Sacred Hearts) in 1992. The following year, she travelled to New York City to pursue a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. She began her studies at Stony Brook University, and graduated in 1997 from Boston University. She received her M.B.A. from Columbia Business School in 2006.
Alberto Fujimori (Spanish: [alˈβeɾto fuxiˈmoɾi] or [fuʝiˈmoɾi]; Japanese: [ɸuʥiꜜmoɺi] or Japanese: [ɸuʥiꜜmoɾi]; Japanese: 藤森アルベルト Fujimori Aruberuto; born 28 July 1938) is a former Peruvian politician. He was President of Peru from 28 July 1990 to 22 November 2000. A controversial figure, Fujimori ended his presidency by fleeing Peru for Japan amid a major corruption scandal and allegations of human rights violations. Despite this, some commentators have credited his government with the creation of Fujimorism, defeating the Shining Path insurgency and restoring Peru's macroeconomic stability. Even amid his prosecution in 2008 for crimes against humanity relating to his presidency, two-thirds of Peruvians polled voiced approval for his leadership in that period.
A Peruvian of Japanese descent, Fujimori took refuge in Japan after charges of corruption in 2000. Upon arriving in Japan he attempted to resign his presidency, but his resignation was rejected by the Congress of the Republic, which preferred to remove him from office by the process of impeachment. Wanted in Peru on charges of corruption and human rights abuses, Fujimori maintained a self-imposed exile until his arrest during a visit to Chile in November 2005. He was finally extradited to face criminal charges in Peru in September 2007.

From 1996 to 2000, around 300,000 women were sterilized in Peru. This happened under former President Alberto Fujimori. The first round of Peru's highly contested presidential election on April 10, 2011 has lead to a run-off between Ollanata Humala and Keiko Fujimori. Three distinguished guests discuss the meaning of the first round results.
Peru is facing a water crisis. Groundwater supplies are rapidly vanishing and the poorest have no access to water. The cause – the country’s farming boom. What’s it like to live without running water? In Peru’s sprawling capital, Lima, this is the everyday reality for 1.5 million children and adults, forced to pay up to a week’s salary for just one day’s water. And the problem isn’t confined to the capital, across the country, the shortage of water is putting lives in danger and provoking conflict, as it displaces communities and threatens their agricultural livelihoods. Climate change is partly to blame, but in this film we explore how European consumers are making this crisis worse. The fruit and vegetables - avocados, asparagus and exotic fruits - that end up on our supermarket shelv...

Daniel Alarcón An Unlikely Democracy: Inside Peru's Lurigancho Prison Inside Peru's largest and most notorious prison, an unlikely sort of democracy has emerged. Bloc 7, which houses those accused of international drug trafficking, is the site of yearly elections, with everything a political campaign on the outside would have: door-to-door politicking, horse-trading, intrigue, campaign parties and rallies, speeches and even secret ballots. How did this surprising system develop, and why? Daniel Alarcón spent two weeks inside Lurigancho, observing the most recent election, in order to find out. Daniel Alarcón is a CLAS Visiting Scholar and the author of two story collections, a graphic novel, and Lost City Radio, which won the 2009 International Literature Prize. He is co-founder of Radio...

From the Amazon to the Andes and all the way up to Machu Picchu, the bus continues its journey through South America on the Transoceânica highway. The mountains mark the most difficult stage of the trip for both drivers and passengers. But the passengers have a large part of the journey behind them now and it won’t be long until they reach Peru. They have crossed Brazil and driven through the Peruvian Amazon basin to the Andes. Here, the endless greenery of the basin gives way to increasingly steep rock faces. The Incas worshipped these mighty mountains as deities and called them Apus - Gods. The road takes us close to one of them: Apu Ausangate, which is 6,384 meters high. The temperature here is much lower than in the Amazon basin. The bus soon reaches Cuzco. For centuries the town wa...
Esperanza and Teodula were sterilised without consent more than 18 years ago and are still searching for justice in rural Peru. The Quipu project - www.quipu-project.com - is their phoneline that allows victims across the country to share their shocking testimonies. These are the unwillingly sterilised women fighting for justice in Peru. They are just two of the 300,000 Peruvians affected by the Family Planning Program promoted by Alberto Fujimori’s government in the mid-90s in Peru, which mostly targeted impoverished, rural, indigenous people. Despite several attempts to bring those responsible to justice, the crime of the forced sterilisations remains unpunished and there are still many Peruvians that denied it ever happened. Esperanza and Teodula, together with other affected women, a...

Prophet T.B. Joshua gives insight into his revelation concerning the USA elections. These were his words. We have seen the outcome of the election in America. Having read, you will notice that it is all about the popular vote, the vote of the majority of Americans. In this case, we need the Spirit of a Prophet to recognize or to know a Prophet. Our levels are different. We are not on the same level. We might have great cathedrals, huge bells, and all kinds of activities that are good by human standards but human point of view is limited. 1 Corinthians 1:25. The foolishness of God is wiser than that of men and the weakness of God is stronger than that of men. There is no shortcut to spiritual maturity unless earthly understanding gives way to spiritual enlightenment. I see many people try...
