Poems of William Blake by William Blake (1757-1827) - FULL Audio Book - Songs of Innocence and of Experience & The Book of Thel
Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul are two books of poetry by the English poet and painter, William Blake. Although Songs of Innocence was first published by itself in 1789, it is believed that Songs of Experience has always been published in conjunction with Innocence since its completion in 1794.
Songs of Innocence mainly consists of poems describing the innocence and joy of the natural world, advocating free love and a closer relationship with God, and most famously including Blake's poem The Lamb. Its poems have a generally light, upbeat and pastoral feel and are typically written from the perspective of children or written about them.
Directly contrasting this, Songs of Experience instead deals with the loss of innocence after exposure to the material world and all of its mortal sin during adult life, including works such as The Tyger. Poems here are darker, concentrating on more political and serious themes. Throughout both books, many poems fall into pairs, so that a similar situation or theme can be seen in both Innocence and Experience. Many of the poems appearing in Songs of Innocence have a counterpart in Songs of Experience with opposing perspectives of the world. The disastrous end of the French Revolution caused Blake to lose faith in the goodness of mankind, explaining much of the volume's sense of despair. Blake also believed that children lost their innocence through exploitation and from a religious community which put dogma before mercy. He did not, however, believe that children should be kept from becoming experienced entirely. In truth, he believed that children should indeed become experienced but through their own discoveries, which is reflected in a number of these poems. Blake believed that innocence and experience were "the two contrary states of the human soul", and that true innocence was impossible without experience.
The Book of Thel is a poem by William Blake, dated 1789 and probably worked on in the period 1788 to 1790. It is illustrated by his own plates, and is relatively short and easy to understand, compared to his later prophetic books. The metre is a fourteen-syllable line. It was preceded by Tiriel, which Blake left in manuscript. A few lines from Tiriel were incorporated into The Book of Thel. This book consists of eight plates executed in illuminated printing. 15 copies of original print of 1789-1793 are known. The following dramatisation of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell and the introductory talk were originally broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The Blake Society is grateful to the dramatiser for making this available. As always, we ask that those who have performed Blake's work to share with us a little of the experience. Below are the thoughts of the dramatiser Claire Peyton Jones.
'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell lent itself perfectly to dramatization - I largely dramatized it as I heard it in my head; I could hear Blake's voice narrate, and the voices he used to drop in the proverbs and fancies - so all I had to do was appropriate these voices, and get a good audio balance between them. I also tried to gently tease out themes by giving them to a particular 'devil' so that threads of thought were easier to follow. Piers Plowright, the producer, first commissioned some jazz to accompany the whole piece, and after finishing the production, decided it fought Blake rather than added to it, so we completely remixed it with less temporal sound-effects which, while less unusual, we felt honoured Blake more. He needs no supplement. While Blake is curiously modern, thus his wide and persistent appeal, he doesn't lend himself well to being viewed though a distinctly temporal window which was the effect of the jazz.
Dr Marilyn Butler offers an illuminating introduction that puts 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' in the context of its time.
Looking at Blake from the perspective of our times - just as jazz was an inappropriate way to elucidate Blake, the philosopher and theologian Francis Schaeffer suggests how difficult this is. Shaeffer describes a paradigm shift of thinking that occurred in the early part of the twentieth century (that had its origins as far back as the late Middle Ages) from which a modern secular sensibility emerged. We lost the supernatural to the natural -- and we became wholly incapable of understanding the world view of faith that preceded it unless we were people of faith ourselves. I suggest that reading Blake from the outside looking in has the same warping effect as the jazz.
Blake reviled the rule-bound, tamed and neatly digestible Christ presented by the church of his day, as annihilating the passionate grace-filled and energetic God I suspect he knew as Jesus Christ. I believe it was this Jesus that Blake wanted to give back to the world - and does so to my mind in a beautifully upside down way in this piece.
Nicky Henson plays Blake - a deliberate choice for his earthy and un-rarified voice. He and the other voices bring out beautifully the playfulness of this delightful piece. You can really sense the pleasure Blake had in creating it -- for us to hear, read and enjoy.'

William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry has led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". Although he lived in London his entire life except for three years spent in Felpham he produced a diverse and symbolically rich corpus, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God", or "Human existence itself".
Considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterised as part of both the Romantic movement and "Pre-Romantic", for its large appearance in the 18th century. Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England – indeed, to all forms of organised religion – Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American revolutions, as well as by such thinkers as Jakob Böhme and Emanuel Swedenborg. Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake's work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th-century scholar William Rossetti characterised Blake as a "glorious luminary," and as "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors".

Plot: It is pouring with rain at one minute to midnight on Friday the thirteenth, and the driver of a London bus is peering through his blurred windscreen as his vehicle sails down an empty road. Suddenly, lightning strikes, and a vast crane above topples into the path of the oncoming bus... Then Big Ben begins to wind backwards. Time recedes. And we discover the lives of all the passengers and the events that brought them to that late-night bus journey, from the con-man with a hundred-pound cheque to the businessman's distraught and elderly wife. Time flows on, inevitably, to the crash -- and past it, as some live and some die.

Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul are two books of poetry by the English poet and painter, William Blake. Although Songs of Innocence was first published by itself in 1789, it is believed that Songs of Experience has always been published in conjunction with Innocence since its completion in 1794.
Songs of Innocence mainly consists of poems describing the innocence and joy of the natural world, advocating free love and a closer relationship with God, and most famously including Blake's poem The Lamb. Its poems have a generally light, upbeat and pastoral feel and are typically written from the perspective of children or written about them.
Directly contrasting this, Songs of Experience instead deals with the loss of innocence after exposure to the material world and all of its mortal sin during adult life, including works such as The Tyger. Poems here are darker, concentrating on more political and serious themes. Throughout both books, many poems fall into pairs, so that a similar situation or theme can be seen in both Innocence and Experience. Many of the poems appearing in Songs of Innocence have a counterpart in Songs of Experience with opposing perspectives of the world. The disastrous end of the French Revolution caused Blake to lose faith in the goodness of mankind, explaining much of the volume's sense of despair. Blake also believed that children lost their innocence through exploitation and from a religious community which put dogma before mercy. He did not, however, believe that children should be kept from becoming experienced entirely. In truth, he believed that children should indeed become experienced but through their own discoveries, which is reflected in a number of these poems. Blake believed that innocence and experience were "the two contrary states of the human soul", and that true innocence was impossible without experience.
The Book of Thel is a poem by William Blake, dated 1789 and probably worked on in the period 1788 to 1790. It is illustrated by his own plates, and is relatively short and easy to understand, compared to his later prophetic books. The metre is a fourteen-syllable line. It was preceded by Tiriel, which Blake left in manuscript. A few lines from Tiriel were incorporated into The Book of Thel. This book consists of eight plates executed in illuminated printing. 15 copies of original print of 1789-1793 are known. Two copies have watermark of 1815, which are more elaborately colored than the others. (Summary from Wikipedia)

Although Songs of Innocence was first published by itself in 1789, it is believed that Songs of Experience has always been published in conjunction with Innocence since its completion in 1794.
Songs of Innocence mainly consists of poems describing the innocence and joy of the natural world, advocating free love and a closer relationship with God, and most famously including Blake's poem The Lamb. Its poems have a generally light, upbeat and pastoral feel and are typically written from the perspective of children or written about them.
Directly contrasting this, Songs of Experience instead deals with the loss of innocence after exposure to the material world and all of its mortal sin during adult life, including works such as The Tyger. Poems here are darker, concentrating on more political and serious themes. Throughout both books, many poems fall into pairs, so that a similar situation or theme can be seen in both Innocence and Experience. Many of the poems appearing in Songs of Innocence have a counterpart in Songs of Experience with opposing perspectives of the world. The disastrous end of the French Revolution caused Blake to lose faith in the goodness of mankind, explaining much of the volume's sense of despair. Blake also believed that children lost their innocence through exploitation and from a religious community which put dogma before mercy. He did not, however, believe that children should be kept from becoming experienced entirely. In truth, he believed that children should indeed become experienced but through their own discoveries, which is reflected in a number of these poems. Blake believed that innocence and experience were "the two contrary states of the human soul", and that true innocence was impossible without experience.
The Book of Thel is a poem by William Blake, dated 1789 and probably worked on in the period 1788 to 1790. It is illustrated by his own plates, and is relatively short and easy to understand, compared to his later prophetic books. The metre is a fourteen-syllable line. It was preceded by Tiriel, which Blake left in manuscript. A few lines from Tiriel were incorporated into The Book of Thel. This book consists of eight plates executed in illuminated printing. 15 copies of original print of 1789-1793 are known. Two copies have watermark of 1815, which are more elaborately colored than the others. (Summary from Wikipedia)

The following dramatisation of the Marriage of Heaven and Hell and the introductory talk were originally broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The Blake Society is grateful to the dramatiser for making this available. As always, we ask that those who have performed Blake's work to share with us a little of the experience. Below are the thoughts of the dramatiser Claire Peyton Jones.
'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell lent itself perfectly to dramatization - I largely dramatized it as I heard it in my head; I could hear Blake's voice narrate, and the voices he used to drop in the proverbs and fancies - so all I had to do was appropriate these voices, and get a good audio balance between them. I also tried to gently tease out themes by giving them to a particular 'devil' so that threads of thought were easier to follow. Piers Plowright, the producer, first commissioned some jazz to accompany the whole piece, and after finishing the production, decided it fought Blake rather than added to it, so we completely remixed it with less temporal sound-effects which, while less unusual, we felt honoured Blake more. He needs no supplement. While Blake is curiously modern, thus his wide and persistent appeal, he doesn't lend himself well to being viewed though a distinctly temporal window which was the effect of the jazz.
Dr Marilyn Butler offers an illuminating introduction that puts 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' in the context of its time.
Looking at Blake from the perspective of our times - just as jazz was an inappropriate way to elucidate Blake, the philosopher and theologian Francis Schaeffer suggests how difficult this is. Shaeffer describes a paradigm shift of thinking that occurred in the early part of the twentieth century (that had its origins as far back as the late Middle Ages) from which a modern secular sensibility emerged. We lost the supernatural to the natural -- and we became wholly incapable of understanding the world view of faith that preceded it unless we were people of faith ourselves. I suggest that reading Blake from the outside looking in has the same warping effect as the jazz.
Blake reviled the rule-bound, tamed and neatly digestible Christ presented by the church of his day, as annihilating the passionate grace-filled and energetic God I suspect he knew as Jesus Christ. I believe it was this Jesus that Blake wanted to give back to the world - and does so to my mind in a beautifully upside down way in this piece.
Nicky Henson plays Blake - a deliberate choice for his earthy and un-rarified voice. He and the other voices bring out beautifully the playfulness of this delightful piece. You can really sense the pleasure Blake had in creating it -- for us to hear, read and enjoy.'

These artists, in one way or another, appreciated Blake's spiritual experience and embodied it in their art.
