Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 -- July 13, 1954; born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán, and perhaps best known for her self-portraits.
Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. She gave her birth date as July 7, 1910, but her birth certificate shows July 6, 1907. Kahlo had allegedly wanted the year of her birth to coincide with the year of the beginning of the Mexican revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. At the age of six, Frida developed polio, which caused her right leg to appear much thinner than the other. It was to remain that way permanently. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.[

After being attached to a number of actors, directors, and producers, this long-gestating biography of one of Mexico's most prominent, iconoclastic painters reaches the screen under the guiding hand of producer/star Salma Hayek. Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts Frida Kahlo's life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera protégée to world-renowned artist in her own right. Frida details Kahlo's affluent upbringing in Mexico City, and her nurturing relationship with her traditional mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola) and philosophical father (Roger Rees). Having already suffered the crippling effects of polio, Kahlo sustains further injuries when a city bus accident nearly ends her life. But in her bed-ridden state, the young artist produces dozens upon dozens of pieces; when she recovers, she presents them to the legendary -- and legendarily temperamental -- Rivera (Alfred Molina), who takes her under his wing as an artist, a political revolutionary, and, inevitably, a lover. Magdalena del Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, más conocida como Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 6 de julio de 1907- Coyoacán, 13 de julio de 1954), fue una pintora y poetisa mexicana de ascendencia alemana y española. Casada con el célebre muralista mexicano Diego Rivera, su vida estuvo cruzada por el infortunio de una enfermedad infantil y por un grave accidente en su juventud que la mantuvo postrada en cama durante largos periodos, llegando a someterse hasta a 32 operaciones quirúrgicas. Llevó una vida poco convencional, fue bisexual y entre sus amantes se encontraba León Trotski. Su obra pictórica gira temáticamente en torno a su biografía y a su propio sufrimiento. Fue autora de unas 200 obras, principalmente autorretratos, en los que proyectó sus dificultades por sobrevivir. La obra de Kahlo está influenciada por su esposo, el reconocido muralista Diego Rivera, con el que compartió su gusto por el arte popular mexicano de raíces indígenas, inspirando a otros pintores mexicanos del periodo post-revolucionario.
En 1939 expuso sus pinturas en Francia acudiendo a una invitación de André Breton, quien intentó convencerla de que eran «surrealistas», aunque Frida decía que esta tendencia no correspondía con su arte ya que ella no pintaba sueños sino su propia vida. Una de las obras de esta exposición (Autorretrato- El Marco, que actualmente se encuentra en el Centro Pompidou) se convirtió en el primer cuadro de un artista mexicano adquirido por el Museo del Louvre. Hasta entonces, Frida Kahlo había pintado sólo privadamente y a ella misma le costó admitir que su obra pudiese tener un interés general. Aunque gozó de la admiración de destacados pintores e intelectuales de su época como Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinski, André Bretón o Marcel Duchamp, su obra alcanzó fama y verdadero reconocimiento internacional después de su muerte, a partir de la década de 1970.

Frida is a 2002 Miramax/Ventanarosa biographical film which depicts the professional and private life of the surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. It stars Salma Hayek in her Academy Award nominated portrayal as Kahlo and Alfred Molina as her husband, Diego Rivera.
The movie was adapted by Clancy Sigal, Diane Lake, Gregory Nava, Anna Thomas and Edward Norton (uncredited) from the book Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrera. It was directed by Julie Taymor. It won Oscars for Best Makeup and Best Original Music Score (recipient: Elliot Goldenthal).
Frida begins with the traumatic accident Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) suffered at the age of 18 when a car trolley collided with a bus she was riding. She is impaled by a metal pole and the injuries she sustained plague her for the rest of her life. To help her through convalescence, her father brings her a canvas upon which to start painting. Throughout the film, a scene starts as a painting, then slowly dissolves into a live-action scene with actors.

Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez de Pinault (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈsalma ˈxaʝek]; born September 2, 1966) is a Mexican and American film actress, director and producer. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role as Frida Kahlo in the film Frida.
Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, the daughter of Diana Jiménez Medina, an opera singer and talent scout, and Sami Hayek Dominguez, an oil company executive who once ran for mayor of Coatzacoalcos. Hayek's father is of Lebanese ancestry, while her mother's ancestry is Spanish. Her first given name, Salma, is Arabic for "safe". Raised in a wealthy, devoutly Roman Catholic family, she was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, at the age of twelve. While there, she was diagnosed with dyslexia. She attended college in Mexico City, where she studied International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana.
At the age of 23, Hayek landed the title role in Teresa (1989), a successful Mexican telenovela that made her a star in Mexico. In 1994, Hayek starred in the film El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley), which has won more awards than any other movie in the history of Mexican cinema.[citation needed] For her performance, Hayek was nominated for an Ariel Award.

Pablo Neruda (July 12, 1904 – September 23, 1973) was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean poet, diplomat and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. He chose his pen name after Czech poet Jan Neruda.
Neruda became known as a poet while still a teenager. He wrote in a variety of styles including surrealist poems, historical epics, overtly political manifestos, a prose autobiography, and erotically-charged love poems such as the ones in his 1924 collection Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Neruda always wrote in green ink as it was his personal colour of hope.
On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic positions and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina. Years later, Neruda was a close collaborator to socialist President Salvador Allende. When Neruda returned to Chile after his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Allende invited him to read at the Estadio Nacional before 70,000 people.

Magdalena del Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, más conocida como Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 6 de julio de 1907- Coyoacán, 13 de julio de 1954), fue una pintora y poetisa mexicana de ascendencia alemana y española. Casada con el célebre muralista mexicano Diego Rivera, su vida estuvo cruzada por el infortunio de una enfermedad infantil y por un grave accidente en su juventud que la mantuvo postrada en cama durante largos periodos, llegando a someterse hasta a 32 operaciones quirúrgicas. Llevó una vida poco convencional, fue bisexual y entre sus amantes se encontraba León Trotski. Su obra pictórica gira temáticamente en torno a su biografía y a su propio sufrimiento. Fue autora de unas 200 obras, principalmente autorretratos, en los que proyectó sus dificultades por sobrevivir. La obra de Kahlo está influenciada por su esposo, el reconocido muralista Diego Rivera, con el que compartió su gusto por el arte popular mexicano de raíces indígenas, inspirando a otros pintores mexicanos del periodo post-revolucionario. En 1939 expuso sus pinturas en Francia acudiendo a una invitación de André Breton, quien intentó convencerla de que eran «surrealistas», aunque Frida decía que esta tendencia no correspondía con su arte ya que ella no pintaba sueños sino su propia vida. Una de las obras de esta exposición (Autorretrato- El Marco, que actualmente se encuentra en el Centro Pompidou) se convirtió en el primer cuadro de un artista mexicano adquirido por el Museo del Louvre. Hasta entonces, Frida Kahlo había pintado sólo privadamente y a ella misma le costó admitir que su obra pudiese tener un interés general. Aunque gozó de la admiración de destacados pintores e intelectuales de su época como Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinski, André Bretón o Marcel Duchamp, su obra alcanzó fama y verdadero reconocimiento internacional después de su muerte, a partir de la década de 1970. FILM DESCRIPTION:
After being attached to a number of actors, directors, and producers, this long-gestating biography of one of Mexico's most prominent, iconoclastic painters reaches the screen under the guiding hand of producer/star Salma Hayek. Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts Frida Kahlo's life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera protégée to world-renowned artist in her own right. Frida details Kahlo's affluent upbringing in Mexico City, and her nurturing relationship with her traditional mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola) and philosophical father (Roger Rees). Having already suffered the crippling effects of polio, Kahlo sustains further injuries when a city bus accident nearly ends her life. But in her bed-ridden state, the young artist produces dozens upon dozens of pieces; when she recovers, she presents them to the legendary -- and legendarily temperamental -- Rivera (Alfred Molina), who takes her under his wing as an artist, a political revolutionary, and, inevitably, a lover. But their relationship is fraught with trouble, as the philandering Rivera traverses the globe painting murals, and Kahlo languishes in obscurity, longing to make her mark on her own. Frida was directed by Julie Taymor, whose Broadway production of The Lion King won her international acclaim.

Magdalena del Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, más conocida como Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 6 de julio de 1907- Coyoacán, 13 de julio de 1954), fue una pintora y poetisa mexicana de ascendencia alemana y española. Casada con el célebre muralista mexicano Diego Rivera, su vida estuvo cruzada por el infortunio de una enfermedad infantil y por un grave accidente en su juventud que la mantuvo postrada en cama durante largos periodos, llegando a someterse hasta a 32 operaciones quirúrgicas. Llevó una vida poco convencional, fue bisexual y entre sus amantes se encontraba León Trotski. Su obra pictórica gira temáticamente en torno a su biografía y a su propio sufrimiento. Fue autora de unas 200 obras, principalmente autorretratos, en los que proyectó sus dificultades por sobrevivir. La obra de Kahlo está influenciada por su esposo, el reconocido muralista Diego Rivera, con el que compartió su gusto por el arte popular mexicano de raíces indígenas, inspirando a otros pintores mexicanos del periodo post-revolucionario.
En 1939 expuso sus pinturas en Francia acudiendo a una invitación de André Breton, quien intentó convencerla de que eran «surrealistas», aunque Frida decía que esta tendencia no correspondía con su arte ya que ella no pintaba sueños sino su propia vida. Una de las obras de esta exposición (Autorretrato- El Marco, que actualmente se encuentra en el Centro Pompidou) se convirtió en el primer cuadro de un artista mexicano adquirido por el Museo del Louvre. Hasta entonces, Frida Kahlo había pintado sólo privadamente y a ella misma le costó admitir que su obra pudiese tener un interés general. Aunque gozó de la admiración de destacados pintores e intelectuales de su época como Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinski, André Bretón o Marcel Duchamp, su obra alcanzó fama y verdadero reconocimiento internacional después de su muerte, a partir de la década de 1970.

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, más conocida como Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 6 de julio de 1907 -- ibídem, 13 de julio de 1954), fue una destacada pintora mexicana.
Frida fue la tercera hija de Guillermo Kahlo , fotógrafo de origen judío-húngaro con su segunda esposa, la mexicana Matilde Calderón, de ascendencia española.1 Sus dos hermanas mayores fueron Matilde y Adriana; después de ellas nació el único hijo varón de la familia, el cual sobrevivió apenas unos días. Cuando Frida tenía apenas once meses, en junio de 1908 nace su hermana menor, Cristina, su constante compañera y la única de las hermanas Kahlo en dejar descendencia. Además de ellas, Frida tuvo tres medias hermanas mayores: Luisa, la mayor, una segunda hermana fallecida al momento de nacer y Margarita, todas nacidas del primer matrimonio de su padre con María Cardeña (llamada también Cerdeña en algunas fuentes), fallecida en el parto de Margarita en 1898.2 3
De acuerdo al estudio de Gaby Franger y Rainer Huhle,4 formaba parte de la leyenda, no pocas veces instigada por la propia Frida, que Guillermo Kahlo tuviera raíces húngaras o judías. Estos autores sostienen que probablemente el fotógrafo nació en Pforzheim, pequeña ciudad del estado de Baden-Wurtemberg y que sus abuelos y resto de antepasados pertenecieron a la burguesía local y eran de religión luterana.5 6
Su vida quedó marcada por el sufrimiento físico que comenzó con la poliomielitis que contrajo en 1913 y continuó con diversas enfermedades, lesiones, accidentes y operaciones. Esta primera enfermedad le dejó una secuela permanente: la pierna derecha mucho más delgada que la izquierda.
Sobre 1920 se incorporó a las juventudes comunistas.7
En 1922 entró en la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria de Ciudad de México, la más prestigiosa institución educativa de México, que recientemente había empezado a admitir chicas como alumnas. Entonces eran 35 chicas entre un total de dos mil alumnos.8 Tenía como objetivo prepararse para estudiar medicina en el futuro. En esta escuela conoce a futuros intelectuales y artistas mexicanos, como Salvador Novo, y formó parte de un grupo de alumnos conocidos como Los Cachuchas
Por medio de Tina Modotti, Frida Conoce a Diego Rivera. Ya una vez, en 1922, había tenido ocasión de observarlo: durante la realización de su primer mural en el Anfiteatro Simón Bolívar, en la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. Después, con el objeto de mostrarle sus propios trabajos hizo una visita al artista. Diego quedó impresionado con su trabajó y la animó a seguir pintando. Desde entonces fue constante invitado a la casa de los Kahlo.
La artista contrajo matrimonio con Diego Rivera el 21 de agosto de 1929. Su relación consistió en amor, aventuras con otras personas, vínculo creativo, odio y un divorcio en 1939.12
Al matrimonio lo llegaron a llamar la unión entre un elefante y una paloma, pues Diego era enorme y obeso mientras que ella era pequeña y delgada. Por otra parte, Frida, debido a sus lesiones, nunca pudo tener hijos, cosa que tardó muchos años en aceptar.13
A pesar de las aventuras de Diego con otras mujeres (que llegaron a incluir a la propia hermana de la pintora14 ), ayudó a Frida en muchos aspectos. Él fue quien le sugirió a Frida que vistiera con el traje tradicional mexicano consistente en largos vestidos de colores y joyería exótica. Esto, junto a su semblante cejijunto, se convirtió en su imagen de marca. Él amaba su pintura y fue también su mayor admirador. Frida, en cambio, fue la mayor crítica de Diego.
Ese mismo año le tuvieron que amputar la pierna por debajo de la rodilla debido a una infección de gangrena. Esto la sumió en una gran depresión que la llevó a intentar el suicidio en un par de ocasiones. Durante ese tiempo, debido a que no podía hacer mucho, escribía poemas en sus diarios, la mayoría relacionados con el dolor y remordimiento.
Murió en Coyoacán el 13 de julio de 1954. No se realizó ninguna autopsia. Fue velada en el Palacio de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de México y su féretro fue cubierto con la bandera del Partido Comunista mexicano, un hecho que fue muy criticado por toda la prensa nacional. Su cuerpo fue incinerado y sus cenizas las alberga la Casa Azul de Coyoacán, lugar que la vio nacer.

Frida fue la tercera hija de Guillermo Kahlo , fotógrafo de origen judío-húngaro con su segunda esposa, la mexicana Matilde Calderón, de ascendencia española.1 Sus dos hermanas mayores fueron Matilde y Adriana; después de ellas nació el único hijo varón de la familia, el cual sobrevivió apenas unos días. Cuando Frida tenía apenas once meses, en junio de 1908 nace su hermana menor, Cristina, su constante compañera y la única de las hermanas Kahlo en dejar descendencia. Además de ellas, Frida tuvo tres medias hermanas mayores: Luisa, la mayor, una segunda hermana fallecida al momento de nacer y Margarita, todas nacidas del primer matrimonio de su padre con María Cardeña (llamada también Cerdeña en algunas fuentes), fallecida en el parto de Margarita en 1898.2 3
De acuerdo al estudio de Gaby Franger y Rainer Huhle,4 formaba parte de la leyenda, no pocas veces instigada por la propia Frida, que Guillermo Kahlo tuviera raíces húngaras o judías. Estos autores sostienen que probablemente el fotógrafo nació en Pforzheim, pequeña ciudad del estado de Baden-Wurtemberg y que sus abuelos y resto de antepasados pertenecieron a la burguesía local y eran de religión luterana.5 6
Su vida quedó marcada por el sufrimiento físico que comenzó con la poliomielitis que contrajo en 1913 y continuó con diversas enfermedades, lesiones, accidentes y operaciones. Esta primera enfermedad le dejó una secuela permanente: la pierna derecha mucho más delgada que la izquierda.
Sobre 1920 se incorporó a las juventudes comunistas.7
En 1922 entró en la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria de Ciudad de México, la más prestigiosa institución educativa de México, que recientemente había empezado a admitir chicas como alumnas. Entonces eran 35 chicas entre un total de dos mil alumnos.8 Tenía como objetivo prepararse para estudiar medicina en el futuro. En esta escuela conoce a futuros intelectuales y artistas mexicanos, como Salvador Novo, y formó parte de un grupo de alumnos conocidos como Los Cachuchas
Por medio de Tina Modotti, Frida Conoce a Diego Rivera. Ya una vez, en 1922, había tenido ocasión de observarlo: durante la realización de su primer mural en el Anfiteatro Simón Bolívar, en la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. Después, con el objeto de mostrarle sus propios trabajos hizo una visita al artista. Diego quedó impresionado con su trabajó y la animó a seguir pintando. Desde entonces fue constante invitado a la casa de los Kahlo.
La artista contrajo matrimonio con Diego Rivera el 21 de agosto de 1929. Su relación consistió en amor, aventuras con otras personas, vínculo creativo, odio y un divorcio en 1939.12
Al matrimonio lo llegaron a llamar la unión entre un elefante y una paloma, pues Diego era enorme y obeso mientras que ella era pequeña y delgada. Por otra parte, Frida, debido a sus lesiones, nunca pudo tener hijos, cosa que tardó muchos años en aceptar.13
A pesar de las aventuras de Diego con otras mujeres (que llegaron a incluir a la propia hermana de la pintora14 ), ayudó a Frida en muchos aspectos. Él fue quien le sugirió a Frida que vistiera con el traje tradicional mexicano consistente en largos vestidos de colores y joyería exótica. Esto, junto a su semblante cejijunto, se convirtió en su imagen de marca. Él amaba su pintura y fue también su mayor admirador. Frida, en cambio, fue la mayor crítica de Diego.
Ese mismo año le tuvieron que amputar la pierna por debajo de la rodilla debido a una infección de gangrena. Esto la sumió en una gran depresión que la llevó a intentar el suicidio en un par de ocasiones. Durante ese tiempo, debido a que no podía hacer mucho, escribía poemas en sus diarios, la mayoría relacionados con el dolor y remordimiento.
Murió en Coyoacán el 13 de julio de 1954. No se realizó ninguna autopsia. Fue velada en el Palacio de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de México y su féretro fue cubierto con la bandera del Partido Comunista mexicano, un hecho que fue muy criticado por toda la prensa nacional. Su cuerpo fue incinerado y sus cenizas las alberga la Casa Azul de Coyoacán, lugar que la vio nacer.
