The Women is a 2008 American comedy film written, produced and directed by Diane English. The screenplay is an updated version of the George Cukor-directed 1939 film of the same name based on a 1936 play by Clare Boothe Luce.
In the original film, most of the characters were Manhattan socialites whose primary interest was idle gossip. In the 2008 version, several work in the fields of fashion design and publishing, and the character of Alex Fisher is openly a lesbian.
A notable feature about this film was that the movie did not show a single male actor or extra, with the exception of the baby at the very end of the film.
Clothing designer Mary Haines lives in a beautiful suburban Connecticut home with her wealthy financier husband Steven and their 11-year-old daughter Molly. Her best friend since college, Sylvie Fowler, is the editor of a prominent fashion magazine that dictates the latest in taste and style for New York City fashionistas. When Sylvie learns Steven is involved with Crystal Allen, a perfume salesgirl in Saks Fifth Avenue, from chatty manicurist Tanya, she confides in the ever-pregnant Edie Cohen but hesitates to tell Mary, who discovers the news herself from the same woman after getting a manicure herself. Despite her mother Catherine's exhortation to keep quiet about what she knows and a holiday away, Mary confronts first Crystal in a department store and then Steven before asking for a divorce.

Women in Japan face formidable barriers in the workplace, but business leaders are beginning to realize something needs to change.
More than 60 percent of female workers quit their jobs after giving birth, and the percentage of women managers in Japan is much lower than in other nations.
This month, a law took effect with the goal of increasing the employment of women.
More than 1,700 women came to a recent event in Tokyo, hoping to find companies that would offer them a career, not just a job. The event was exclusively for women.
"I want to work at a company that supports women even when they get married or have children," said one of the attendees.
A manager at the company that puts on the fair says it gets a big response, each time the event is held. He's always surprised by how many women are not satisfied with their careers.
Many actually give up on a career once they have a child.
Yuka Nishijima resigned from a finance institution 5 years ago, before her child was born.
"I was afraid of losing my credibility at work if I took a day off to see a doctor or when I didn't feel well," she says. "People were nice, but I didn't want to cause trouble."
Before she quit, Nishijima was thinking it wouldn't be hard to leave her son at a nursery while she worked somewhere. But the wait for public daycare was long, and the cost of a private facility too high.
Her husband has avoided taking paternity leave, because no man at his company has ever done so.
"I realized how much I wanted to work after quitting my job," Nishijima says. "I really hope to be employed and improve my skills and career. But I am my boy's mother and he needs me. I even feel guilty about wishing to develop my career."
At a major paper manufacturer in Tokyo, managers like Kazu Ikeda are taking steps to attract more female workers and guide the women towards senior roles.
Ikeda is drawing up a plan for increasing the number of women workers and managers there. She's proposing systems such as teleworking for those raising children.
Ikeda conducted a survey to find out what employees think about their careers. The answers alarmed her. She was concerned by the number of women who don't want to become managers.
They said they have no role models, and feel their bosses don't expect them to move up the ladder.
"Male bosses may seem to be getting along with female workers, but in reality, they may not really be depending on women workers or training them to become managers," Ikeda says.
She has set a goal of ensuring that 10 percent managers at the company are women by 2020.
Ikeda briefed heads of divisions on the results of the survey, and her plan. One manager complained about the difficulty of giving assignments to women who take maternity leave.
"They work for a while, take a leave, return to work, and take another leave," the manager said. "It's really hard to assign jobs to them."
"It's important to believe in supporting women's career development, no matter what. There's nothing wrong with taking a long leave," Ikeda said. "We have to insist that working mothers also be entrusted with work responsibilities and allowed to make achievements."
Ikeda is running training sessions to help managers see things differently, as well as programs to aid women in becoming managers.
Senior Executive Officer Gemmei Shimamura says he hopes the projects will help the company move beyond the approach that's typical for the industry.
"Our business is changing. So, should our way of managing. We need to diversify our workforce. If we can let women workers fully exercise their capabilities, that will add great power to the entire operation," Shimamura says.
The government estimates 3 million women in Japan wish to work but don't. That leaves a lot of room for progress.

Our Prophet (saas) decreed in the hadith “The antichrist (PKK) will deceive women and ignorant countrymen more easily”
ADNAN OKTAR: Our mothers are good hearted, pure-minded people. PKK is manipulating them, suppressing them, threatening them. These people are not even remotely familiar with Stalinism. They perform their prayers five times a day. And PKK tell these pious people; "From now on, you are a Stalinist, a communist." So they are forced to say they are Stalinists, communists. These people read the Quran day and night. They give their praises to God. It is obvious that they are deceived. "The antichrist will deceive women and children more easily," says Our Prophet (saas) in the hadith. And this is exactly what the antichrist is doing right now. "Ignorant women and children" says Our Prophet (saas). Ignorant women; people who seldom read, and research, indeed. He manipulates, deceives such people easily. But he cannot deceive enlightened, well-read, rational people. While describing the antichrist, Our Prophet (saas) says "the antichrist won't be very knowledgeable, yet he will manage to deceive everyone, and the women and the ignorant countrymen in particular. This is what PKK has been doing. "People who live in the countryside do not read, write or research; they are uninformed and ignorant. So it will be easier for the antichrist to mislead them. Especially the women and the ignorant countrymen" says the Prophet (saas). This is written in the book of al-Barzanji. (The Signs of the Apocalypse, Page 216)

In almost all cultures, women have always been oppressed in one way or another. In male hominids, natural selection favoured the characteristics of a fighter and protector, making them big and strong, while in females the emphasis was on cooperation and child rearing.
Discrimination against women is, unfortunately, one of the few features that virtually all the cultures of the world have in common. The possessors of the valuable, scarce ovules end up being lovers, wives, mothers, educators, cooks, gatherers, artisans and, all too often, martyrs.
In humans inequalities between female and male occur every day in many parts of the world. The Ekkor are a people who live from subsistence agriculture, like so many others in the world. From the early hours of the morning, the only people working are the women. The majority of the human population of the world is rural and poor, but they have another thing in common: the women not only play the role of mothers, but also carry out the hardest work.
Equality between men and women can only be achieved if women are, in part at least, freed from their biological burden, on the basis of cultural solidarity.
But often, to achieve this, they have to fight against very deep-rooted customs and cultures. The most terrible example of this is the ablation of the clitoris, a barbarous mutilation that affects over seventy million women throughout Africa.
Nonetheless, the biological system was well designed, the family functioned as a social unit and human beings colonised the entire planet. What strategies did other animal species adopt?
Each species has different systems and strategies when it comes to reproduce and raise their young. In some cases both females and males actively involved in courtship and mate for life, an example is the ostriches and African dic-dics.
In other cases the female looks the best genetics for their young and are dedicated to copulate with various and numerous males "strategy of the virile male" completely unconcerned care of them. These are, among others, rhinoceros and emus, a bird whose males are responsible for incubating the eggs. Finally elephants case, the females are responsible for maintaining the family unit. But the fact that some female mammals spend so much time taking care of their young means that during this period they do not mate with the males. And some of them may lose patience and give into the temptation to kill the young, so the mother will again come into heat, this happens with grizzly bears. The biological differences between male and female mammals can very clearly be seen in one of the most common reproductive strategies: the harem (The male is the only one authorised to copulate with all the females of his herd)
All this conflict between the sexes, all this confusion and injustice, stems from a biological reality which in its time functioned, so successfully in fact that it made us the dominant species on the planet. The key lies in our children, the care of whom prevents many women in the third world from being able to choose their own destinies, burdened by one pregnancy after another. Some 200 million women become pregnant every year; half of all births are unplanned, and a quarter unwanted.
Family planning translates into happier woman, healthier children and a more just world. Being the custodians of life should not be allowed to become a biological curse. After all, a mother is, first and foremost, a woman.

Equality between men and women can only be achieved if women are, in part at least, freed from their biological burden, on the basis of cultural solidarity.
But often, to achieve this, they have to fight against very deep-rooted customs and cultures. The most terrible example of this is the ablation of the clitoris, a barbarous mutilation that affects over seventy million women throughout Africa.
Nonetheless, the biological system was well designed, the family functioned as a social unit and human beings colonised the entire planet. What strategies did other animal species adopt?
Each species has different systems and strategies when it comes to reproduce and raise their young. In some cases both females and males actively involved in courtship and mate for life, an example is the ostriches and African dic-dics.
In other cases the female looks the best genetics for their young and are dedicated to copulate with various and numerous males "strategy of the virile male" completely unconcerned care of them. These are, among others, rhinoceros and emus, a bird whose males are responsible for incubating the eggs. Finally elephants case, the females are responsible for maintaining the family unit. But the fact that some female mammals spend so much time taking care of their young means that during this period they do not mate with the males. And some of them may lose patience and give into the temptation to kill the young, so the mother will again come into heat, this happens with grizzly bears. The biological differences between male and female mammals can very clearly be seen in one of the most common reproductive strategies: the harem (The male is the only one authorised to copulate with all the females of his herd)
All this conflict between the sexes, all this confusion and injustice, stems from a biological reality which in its time functioned, so successfully in fact that it made us the dominant species on the planet. The key lies in our children, the care of whom prevents many women in the third world from being able to choose their own destinies, burdened by one pregnancy after another. Some 200 million women become pregnant every year; half of all births are unplanned, and a quarter unwanted.
Family planning translates into happier woman, healthier children and a more just world. Being the custodians of life should not be allowed to become a biological curse. After all, a mother is, first and foremost, a woman.

Sura An-Nisa (Arabic: سورة النساء, Sūratu an-Nisā, "Women")[1] is the fourth chapter of the Qur'an, with 176 verses. The title of the sura derives from the numerous references to women throughout the chapter, including verses 3-4 and 127-130.[2] It is a Medinan sura,[2] as confirmed by Allamah Muhammad Hussain Tabatabai, who states that the sura must have been revealed after the hijah based on the subject matter.[3]
Although An- Nisa typically appears as the fourth sura, according to the Nöldeke classification of suras, based on Islamic traditions, "The Women" was approximately revealed as the hundredth sura.[4] Amir-Ali places it as the 94th sura, while Hz. Osman and Ibn`Abbas believe it is the 92nd.[5] Ja`fer es-Sadik places it as the 91st sura revealed.[6] Based on the legislation concerning orphans, the sura was most likely revealed after many Muslims were killed at the Battle of Uhud, leaving numerous dependents in the new Muslim community.[7] The revelation therefore began around the year three, according to the Islamic calendar, but was not completed until the year eight.[8] Consequently, parts of this sura, the second longest in the Qur'an, were revealed concurrently with portions of the longest sura in the Qur'an, "The Examined Woman," sura 60.[9] However, the sura shows some thematic coherence, despite its disjointed and ongoing revelation.[10]
Furthermore, as relates to the placement of this sura within the Qur'an as a whole, Neal Robinson notes what he refers to as the "dovetailing" of suras.[11] Based on this idea of structure, one sura ends with a topic that is immediately picked up in the next sura.[11] The Family of 'Imran, sura 3, includes a discussion of male and female near the end of the sura (3.195).[11] This theme continues at the beginning of sura 4[11]: "People, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the pair of them spread countless men and women far and wide; be mindful of God, in whose name you make requests of one another."[12] This dovetailing may indicate a complex editorial process involved in ordering the suras.[13]
This Medianian sura aims at protecting the newly-formed Muslim community by outlining acceptable behavior for Muslims.[14] It illustrates the Qur'an's role as an authoritative legal source[15] and its ability to shape the community. The sura aims to eradicate the earlier practices of pagan, Arab communities that are no longer considered moral in the Muslim society.[16] For example, the section of this sura about dealing fairly with orphan girls (4:2-4) addresses the pre-Islamic Arabic practice of marrying orphan girls in order to take their property.[17]
Thematically, "An-Nisa" not only addresses concerns about women, but also discusses inheritance, marriage laws, how to deal with children and orphans, legal practices, jihād, relations between Muslim communities and People of the Book, war, and the role of Jesus as a prophet, rather than the son of God as Christians claimed.[18] Furthermore, in discussing war, this sura encourages the Muslim community to fight for the vulnerable in war,[17] as demonstrated by 4:75: "Why should you not fight in God's cause and for those oppressed men, women, and children who cry out, 'Lord, rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors! By Your grace, give us a protector and give us a helper!'?" [19] The sura addresses a multitude of issues faced by the early Muslim community and provides responses to the challenges the community faced. The wide variety of issues addressed in the sura and the length of the sura make it difficult to divide into literary structures. However, based on a study of themes present in each section of the sura, Amīn Ahsan Islāhī divides the sura into three thematically- based sections- social reform, the Islamic community and its opponents, and a conclusion.[20] Mathias Zahniser presents an alternative means of looking at the structure of this sura. He claims that the central theme of this sura is the address to the Christians.
