Cerro San Cristóbal (Tupahue, San Cristóbal Hill) is a hill in northern Santiago, Chile. It rises 880 m AMSL and about 300 m above the rest of Santiago; the peak is the second highest point in the city, after Cerro Renca. Cerro San Cristóbal was named by the Spanish conquistadors for St Christopher, in recognition of its use as a landmark. Its original indigenous name is Tupahue.
Cerro San Cristóbal began to be used in 1903 with the installation of the Mills Observatory, currently known as the Manuel Foster Observatory, twin of the Lick Observatory of the University of California.
On its summit there is a sanctuary dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, with a 22 meter statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an amphitheater and a chapel. The statue of the Immaculate Conception measures 14 meters tall, and the pedestal on which it rests is 8.3 meters in height. It weighs 36,610 kilograms. Within the pedestal there is a small chapel in which Pope John Paul II prayed and blessed the city of Santiago on April 1, 1987. The statue is lit up at night by lights placed on its sides, allowing it to be viewed from all over Santiago both day and night.
My journey going up to San Cristobal Hill in Santiago, Chile where the famous Mary Is placed there. The journey by Funicular is thrilling one.
Cerro San Cristóbal (San Cristóbal Hill) is a hill in central-northern Santiago, Chile. It rises 880 m. AMSL and about 300 m. above the rest of Santiago; the peak is the second highest point in the city, after Cerro Renca. Cerro San Cristóbal was named by the Spanish-Chilean San Cristóbal family, although its original name is Tupahue (Mapudungun: place of god or gods). The San Cristóbal family held a quarry on the hill's south side, close to the Mapocho River. Limestone from the quarry was used in the building of the first containments of the Mapocho River and also in the construction of its bridges. San Cristobal is one of the main hills that make up Santiago's Metropolitan Park. Cerro San Cristóbal began to be used within academic-scientific purposes in 1903 with the installation of...
This clear weather as you can see is very rare. Only during after rain and only during after November till April you can experience this kind of weather or skies. Since Santiago is surrounded by mountains and hills this city is polluted. The dust is unable to be flown away from winds. Very rarely we can experience this type of clear view.
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com We finished up our Santiago Like a Local tour by taking the Metro back to Baquedano, tucking into what was supposed to be the best ice cream in Santiago (which we give a -10 rating and was very expensive) before walking through Barrio Bellavista. I will be uploading a separate video about Bellavista later in this series. The walk led to the funicular up to the top of San Cristobal Hill and its park. There are good but smoggy views of this huge city from the top. Admission to the park is free except for the funicular but visitors can also walk or bike up to the top. Completely exhausted by now, Marine and I couldn't put one foot in front of the other and taxi'd back to Holiday Inn Express. What a great day!

Its original indigenous name was Tupahue. It was named by the Spanish conquistadors for St Christopher, in recognition of its use as a landmark. At the peak, there is a church with an amphitheater, and a 22 meter statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary donated by France in the 1920s. Pope John Paul II gave mass there in 1987. The spot is a superb location from which to view the city - when the smog permits it (usually in the summer or after it rains). At its foothills are the Metropolitan Zoo and a Japanese-style garden, and up there are also two municipal pools, Tupahue and Antilén. Cerro San Cristóbal hou...
Our trip to Chile wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the capital, so towards the end of our stay we decided to visit Santiago. We had 4 days to discover what the city was all about, so we set out to visit the main attractions, sample Chilean food (Comida Chilena), and explore various neighborhoods on foot. We may not have been able to see it all, but the following is our experience in the city. Santiago de Chile, a city of extremes, is surrounded by the world’s longest mountain range, driest desert, largest ocean and southernmost grassy plains. The cosmopolitan South American capital has the perfect mix of both historic and ultra-modern attractions. The lively Plaza de Armas houses the divine Metropolitan Cathedral and the National History Museum. Santa Lucía Hill is the place where the city was founded by the Spanish in the 16th-century and the Chilean Museum of pre-Colombian Art shows what life was like here before colonial rule. La Moneda Palace is the seat of government and the place of Augusto Pinochet’s 1973 military coup. The Museum of Memory and Human Rights documents the dictator’s repressive regime. Santiago has many city parks. Parque Bicentenario is in Vitacura, w...
Aerial view from San Cristobal hill in Santiago de Chile. As you can the famous Mapocho river flowing from mount Andes. Looking from the landscape. I m sure that millions of years ago, the city of santiago was under sea water. Since the city is surrounded with mountains and hills. Its like a city in huge valley. so, i m sure this city was a sea before.
Hello everyone! On this adventure I show you all my day with Isabelle. I had her take public transportation to the center and then in the evening we decided to take a bus to el Cerro San Cristobal. I'm not sure if it's a hill or mountain top but it's over 400 meters above sea level and only costs S/5 to go up there and come back down. I definitely recommend it at sunset if you want a great view of Lima. My phone camera didn't do such a great job of filming the beautiful view but you can check out Isabelle's channel because her footage is probably better than mine. https://www.youtube.com/user/magnetismofpuregold ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ My social media accounts in case you want to stay in touch with me: F A C E B O O K : http://www.facebook.com/StefsPeruTravelTips T W I T T ...
San Cristobal Trip Part I: Approaching ------------------- During my last travel to Providencia (Santiago, Chile), one immediately can be impressed with the famous San Cristobal Hill, where it is said a Statue of the Virgin Mary can be found in the very peak Our Purpose: to reach this sculpture, without any touristic guide, or aid map. We build this video using three scenes. The first one shows a very nice transport we were very surprised with: the 'Teleferico', so, an essential sub-objective of the travel was to find how to board them. Our first contact with these cabins were from the Mapocho Edge, using a 24x zoom camera. After investigating the zone, we captured a second sight of the cabins, in one of the streets in the neighborhood. This time the zoom was less powerful. In...
