Everything you thought you knew is about to be proven false. The Easter Island heads are actually more than just heads. Although, if you're an archaeologist you've known about this discovery for years, but the general population is oblivious to such information!

The Secret Of Easter Island Mystery Solved! The Easter Island Heads Have Bodies Too.
Are the bodies of the giant Easter island heads hiding beneath the ground?
That's what were going to find out today here on Hoax Factor
I was sent this image from Adam one of my Hoax Factor Subscribers on Facebook who asked me if it were true, that there were bodies attached to the heads at Easter Island lurking below the earth's surface.
Even though I'm a car insurance salesman by day, I'm a hoax buster by night. It sure is a lot more fun to do this than run car insurance quotes all day long.
As you can see, the lead text to the article attached to the image says...Archaeologists have known since 1919 that Easter Island heads have bodies. Did you?
The image even though its an artists rendition is compelling. 2 Stone faced maoi are shown above the ground, but the massive shoulders imply a giant lurks below.
Its time for some questions.
#1 Is it true that the Easter Island Heads have bodies and Archaeologists have known about this since 1919?
#2 How big and tall is an Easter Island Maoi when its fully unearthed?
#3 Where can I get cheap airline tickets to see these in person? because drinking my redbull and vodka out of this mug so I can work all night isn't cutting it anymore!
#1 Is it true that the Easter Island Heads have bodies and Archaeologists have known about this since 1919?
Easter Island is located in the southeastern pacific ocean. It is most famous for a collection of 887 giant statues called Moai that were built by the Rapa Nui People.
The island got its name from a Dutch explorer who f irst encountered the island on Easter Sunday in 1722.
Polynesian people settled the island sometime between 700 and 1100 CE.
The Maoi were created by these Polynesian settlers sometime between 1250 and 1500 CE
Most were created at the main Moai quarry Rano Raraku with hundreds later moved and set on stone platforms (ahu) all around the island.
These stoic faced statues are thought to be symbols of power and authority and might hold both religious and political symbolism as well.
Most were built with over sized heads (3/8 the size of the whole statue) and a lot of focus has been on the 150 statues on the slope of the volcano that just happen to be buried in the ground up to their heads. Both of these facts has lead many people to believe they are just heads, which is why they are usually referred to as the Easter Island Heads.
But to answer the question. Yes they do have bodies. And this fact has been known since 1914, 5 years earlier than what was stated on the image.
#2 How big and tall is an Easter Island Maoi when its fully unearthed?
Out of the 887 Moai on the island all but 53 of the statues were carved out of compressed volcanic ash.
The average Moai stands about 13 feet tall and are over 5 feet wide at the base and top the scales at a whopping 13.8 tons each.
The tallest of the Moai is a statue called Paro and it is almost 33 feet high and weighs over 80 tons. One statue that was never finished would have topped out at almost 70 feet tall and weigh over 270 tons.
Some of the more interesting things discovered about these mysterious creations.
The eye sockets were designed to hold coral eyes with black obsidian or scoria pupils.
This is a photo of the statue Ahu Tahai with replica eyes in place.
The article also stated that the Moai were covered in petroglyphs. This is true.
In 1914 an expedition held by Katherine Routledge determined that the designs on the Maoi had a definite cultural link tied to the island inhabitants tattooing traditions.
But most interesting of all...
The statues may have also been created as a spiritual plea to the gods to undo the ravages of leprosy that had been experienced there.
According to Dr Annelise Pontius, certain characteristics of the Moai represent signs of leprosy in a reversed or over corrected form like pronounced stylized nostrils vs a nose' cartilage destroyed by leprosy.
The Moai also had upward placing of the lips with no teeth visible.
Instead of Lower hanging lips and visible teeth due to facial paralysis.
Whatever the reasons for their being created we will never know for sure, but the Rapa Nui left us plenty to talk about.

Well...Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world so cheap airline tickets are probably out of the questions and I'm all out of vacation time ...so its another night of drowning with my little moai buddy.
So to wrap this up!
To call the image a fake is a bit harsh, so we will just go with it being an artistic interpretation of the Moai...the story is real, but somewhat factually inaccurate.
The Moai do have bodies, but Archaeologist have known about them since 1914, not 1919.

Sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself and you take it. Traveling to Easter Island (known locally as Rapa Nui and in Spanish as Isla de Pascua) was something we never thought possible in our lifetimes. However, when a short-time discounted airfare was available, we snapped it up and with an opportunity to explore the island slowly, we spent time hiking, walking and renting a vehicle to cover as much as the island as possible. The following Easter Island travel video is our best attempt to document our day to day adventure in the form of a series of vlogs from Day 1 to Day 7. We feel that if you're going to experience the best Easter Island has to offer you had better give yourself a 4 to 7 days. Our visit Easter Island travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including all of the various moai statues, beaches and best locations for sunset and sunrise photos. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Easter Island tourism brochure. Visiting Easter Island Travel Documentary (Isla de Pascua - Rapa Nui) Polynesia Video Transcript: After close to a month travelling around Chile, Sam and I hopped on a plane to visit Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui. This was the closest we were ever going to get to this remote speck in the ocean, which also happens to be the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. We gave ourselves one full week to explore Isla de Pascua, and what follows is a travel guide of our time there. We hiked ancient volcanoes, stood face to face with the moai, watched spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and road tripped around the island while wild horses ran alongside. It was an incredible week and we hope this video will inspire you to plan your own visit to Easter Island. Rano Kau is 324 meters tall and it is located on the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui. We hiked all the way from town, and because of it’s gradual incline, we found it to be a relatively easy activity. That being said, we would recommend doing it early in the morning, since there were very few shaded areas along the way. Orongo is a village and ceremonial site located just past the Rano Kau Crater. Unfortunately, it started pouring rain shortly after we reached the site, so we didn’t get to visit, but we made plans to return later that week. That evening we made our way into Hanga Roa to watch the sun set from the harbour. There were lots of surfers out on the water, and the waves kept rolling in and crashing against the rocks. After the market we took a walk to Ahu Tahai, which is a ceremonial complex that holds 3 different ‘ahus’ or platforms with moai. Perhaps the most famed of the three is Ahu Ko Te Riku, which stands out from the rest because it has restored eyes. Having already visited Ahu Tahai by day, we still made it a point to come in the late afternoon. The complex is just a short walk to the north end of town, and it also happens to be the best place to catch the sunset on the island. From this spot you can watch the sun paint the sky all shades of persimmon, pink and gold, before finally setting behind the moai and then dipping beneath the ocean. Rano Raraku is yet another volcano crater found on the island, and it is also the site of the quarry that supplied the stone for the hundreds of moai that can be found on the island. The quarry is believed to have been in use for a span of 500 years up until the early 18th century when activity ceased. It would also appear that this site was abandoned in a rush since many of the moai here are unfinished. After seeing the moai scattered on the slopes of the volcano, we took a little detour and hiked into the crater. We also spotted wild horses and a few moai inside the crater, which was quite unexpected. From there we continued on to Ahu Tongariki for a quick visit. This site is home to 15 moai, making it the biggest ‘ahu’ on the island. The best place to catch the sunrise in Rapa Nui is at Ahu Tongariki. We made the drive in the dark and we arrived just as the sky was beginning to show it’s soft morning colours. One of the best decisions we made on our trip was to rent a car so that we would have the ability to explore all of Easter Island. On one particular afternoon, we hopped in the car and decided to drive the full island loop. We got to enjoy landscapes, the waves crashing along the rocky shores, and we also encountered many wild horses! And just like that our week on Easter Island was up! Full Day Tour around Easter Island
My first full day on Easter Island and I go on an organised tour to the main sites. The first stop is Ahu Hanga Te’e, a site with eight fallen Moai and their Pukao (topknots). #1 Is it true that the Easter Island Heads have bodies and Archaeologists have known about this since 1919?
Easter Island is located in the southeastern pacific ocean. It is most famous for a collection of 887 giant statues called Moai that were built by the Rapa Nui People.
The island got its name from a Dutch explorer who f irst encountered the island on Easter Sunday in 1722.
Polynesian people settled the island sometime between 700 and 1100 CE.
The Maoi were created by these Polynesian settlers sometime between 1250 and 1500 CE
Most were created at the main Moai quarry Rano Raraku with hundreds later moved and set on stone platforms (ahu) all around the island.
These stoic faced statues are thought to be symbols of power and authority and might hold both religious and political symbolism as well.
Most were built with over sized heads (3/8 the size of the whole statue) and a lot of focus has been on the 150 statues on the slope of the volcano that just happen to be buried in the ground up to their heads. Both of these facts has lead many people to believe they are just heads, which is why they are usually referred to as the Easter Island Heads.
But to answer the question. Yes they do have bodies. And this fact has been known since 1914, 5 years earlier than what was stated on the image.
#2 How big and tall is an Easter Island Maoi when its fully unearthed?
Out of the 887 Moai on the island all but 53 of the statues were carved out of compressed volcanic ash.
The average Moai stands about 13 feet tall and are over 5 feet wide at the base and top the scales at a whopping 13.8 tons each.
The tallest of the Moai is a statue called Paro and it is almost 33 feet high and weighs over 80 tons. One statue that was never finished would have topped out at almost 70 feet tall and weigh over 270 tons.
Some of the more interesting things discovered about these mysterious creations.
The eye sockets were designed to hold coral eyes with black obsidian or scoria pupils.
This is a photo of the statue Ahu Tahai with replica eyes in place.
The article also stated that the Moai were covered in petroglyphs. This is true.
In 1914 an expedition held by Katherine Routledge determined that the designs on the Maoi had a definite cultural link tied to the island inhabitants tattooing traditions.
But most interesting of all...
The statues may have also been created as a spiritual plea to the gods to undo the ravages of leprosy that had been experienced there.
According to Dr Annelise Pontius, certain characteristics of the Moai represent signs of leprosy in a reversed or over corrected form like pronounced stylized nostrils vs a nose' cartilage destroyed by leprosy.
The Moai also had upward placing of the lips with no teeth visible.
Instead of Lower hanging lips and visible teeth due to facial paralysis.
Whatever the reasons for their being created we will never know for sure, but the Rapa Nui left us plenty to talk about.

Well...Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world so cheap airline tickets are probably out of the questions and I'm all out of vacation time ...so its another night of drowning with my little moai buddy.
So to wrap this up!
To call the image a fake is a bit harsh, so we will just go with it being an artistic interpretation of the Moai...the story is real, but somewhat factually inaccurate.
The Moai do have bodies, but Archaeologist have known about them since 1914, not 1919.

Easter Island is located in the southeastern pacific ocean. It is most famous for a collection of 887 giant statues called Moai that were built by the Rapa Nui People.
The island got its name from a Dutch explorer who f irst encountered the island on Easter Sunday in 1722.
Polynesian people settled the island sometime between 700 and 1100 CE.
The Maoi were created by these Polynesian settlers sometime between 1250 and 1500 CE
Most were created at the main Moai quarry Rano Raraku with hundreds later moved and set on stone platforms (ahu) all around the island.
These stoic faced statues are thought to be symbols of power and authority and might hold both religious and political symbolism as well.
Most were built with over sized heads (3/8 the size of the whole statue) and a lot of focus has been on the 150 statues on the slope of the volcano that just happen to be buried in the ground up to their heads. Both of these facts has lead many people to believe they are just heads, which is why they are usually referred to as the Easter Island Heads.
But to answer the question. Yes they do have bodies. And this fact has been known since 1914, 5 years earlier than what was stated on the image.
#2 How big and tall is an Easter Island Maoi when its fully unearthed?
Out of the 887 Moai on the island all but 53 of the statues were carved out of compressed volcanic ash.
The average Moai stands about 13 feet tall and are over 5 feet wide at the base and top the scales at a whopping 13.8 tons each.
The tallest of the Moai is a statue called Paro and it is almost 33 feet high and weighs over 80 tons. One statue that was never finished would have topped out at almost 70 feet tall and weigh over 270 tons.
Some of the more interesting things discovered about these mysterious creations.
The eye sockets were designed to hold coral eyes with black obsidian or scoria pupils.
This is a photo of the statue Ahu Tahai with replica eyes in place.
The article also stated that the Moai were covered in petroglyphs. This is true.
In 1914 an expedition held by Katherine Routledge determined that the designs on the Maoi had a definite cultural link tied to the island inhabitants tattooing traditions.
But most interesting of all...
The statues may have also been created as a spiritual plea to the gods to undo the ravages of leprosy that had been experienced there.
According to Dr Annelise Pontius, certain characteristics of the Moai represent signs of leprosy in a reversed or over corrected form like pronounced stylized nostrils vs a nose' cartilage destroyed by leprosy.
The Moai also had upward placing of the lips with no teeth visible.
Instead of Lower hanging lips and visible teeth due to facial paralysis.
Whatever the reasons for their being created we will never know for sure, but the Rapa Nui left us plenty to talk about.
#3 Where can I get cheap airline tickets to see these in person? because drinking my red bull and vodka out of this mug so I canwork all night isn't cutting it anymore!
Well...Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world so cheap airline tickets are probably out of the questions and I'm all out of vacation time ...so its another night of drowning with my little moai buddy.
So to wrap this up!
To call the image a fake is a bit harsh, so we will just go with it being an artistic interpretation of the Moai...the story is real, but somewhat factually inaccurate.
The Moai do have bodies, but Archaeologist have known about them since 1914, not 1919.

Sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself and you take it. Traveling to Easter Island (known locally as Rapa Nui and in Spanish as Isla de Pascua) was something we never thought possible in our lifetimes. However, when a short-time discounted airfare was available, we snapped it up and with an opportunity to explore the island slowly, we spent time hiking, walking and renting a vehicle to cover as much as the island as possible. The following Easter Island travel video is our best attempt to document our day to day adventure in the form of a series of vlogs from Day 1 to Day 7. We feel that if you're going to experience the best Easter Island has to offer you had better give yourself a 4 to 7 days.

Visiting Easter Island Travel Documentary (Isla de Pascua - Rapa Nui) Polynesia Video Transcript:
After close to a month travelling around Chile, Sam and I hopped on a plane to visit Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui. This was the closest we were ever going to get to this remote speck in the ocean, which also happens to be the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. We gave ourselves one full week to explore Isla de Pascua, and what follows is a travel guide of our time there. We hiked ancient volcanoes, stood face to face with the moai, watched spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and road tripped around the island while wild horses ran alongside. It was an incredible week and we hope this video will inspire you to plan your own visit to Easter Island.
Rano Kau is 324 meters tall and it is located on the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui. We hiked all the way from town, and because of it’s gradual incline, we found it to be a relatively easy activity. That being said, we would recommend doing it early in the morning, since there were very few shaded areas along the way.
Orongo is a village and ceremonial site located just past the Rano Kau Crater. Unfortunately, it started pouring rain shortly after we reached the site, so we didn’t get to visit, but we made plans to return later that week.
That evening we made our way into Hanga Roa to watch the sun set from the harbour. There were lots of surfers out on the water, and the waves kept rolling in and crashing against the rocks.
After the market we took a walk to Ahu Tahai, which is a ceremonial complex that holds 3 different ‘ahus’ or platforms with moai. Perhaps the most famed of the three is Ahu Ko Te Riku, which stands out from the rest because it has restored eyes.
Having already visited Ahu Tahai by day, we still made it a point to come in the late afternoon. The complex is just a short walk to the north end of town, and it also happens to be the best place to catch the sunset on the island. From this spot you can watch the sun paint the sky all shades of persimmon, pink and gold, before finally setting behind the moai and then dipping beneath the ocean.
Rano Raraku is yet another volcano crater found on the island, and it is also the site of the quarry that supplied the stone for the hundreds of moai that can be found on the island. The quarry is believed to have been in use for a span of 500 years up until the early 18th century when activity ceased. It would also appear that this site was abandoned in a rush since many of the moai here are unfinished.
After seeing the moai scattered on the slopes of the volcano, we took a little detour and hiked into the crater. We also spotted wild horses and a few moai inside the crater, which was quite unexpected.
From there we continued on to Ahu Tongariki for a quick visit. This site is home to 15 moai, making it the biggest ‘ahu’ on the island.
The best place to catch the sunrise in Rapa Nui is at Ahu Tongariki. We made the drive in the dark and we arrived just as the sky was beginning to show it’s soft morning colours.
One of the best decisions we made on our trip was to rent a car so that we would have the ability to explore all of Easter Island. On one particular afternoon, we hopped in the car and decided to drive the full island loop. We got to enjoy landscapes, the waves crashing along the rocky shores, and we also encountered many wild horses!
And just like that our week on Easter Island was up! Rapa Nui is one of the most fascinating places we have ever visited, and we loved getting to explore every inch of the island.

The best place to catch the sunrise in Rapa Nui is at Ahu Tongariki. We made the drive in the dark and we arrived just as the sky was beginning to show it’s soft morning colours.
One of the best decisions we made on our trip was to rent a car so that we would have the ability to explore all of Easter Island. On one particular afternoon, we hopped in the car and decided to drive the full island loop. We got to enjoy landscapes, the waves crashing along the rocky shores, and we also encountered many wild horses!
And just like that our week on Easter Island was up! Rapa Nui is one of the most fascinating places we have ever visited, and we loved getting to explore every inch of the island.

My first full day on Easter Island and I go on an organised tour to the main sites.
The first stop is Ahu Hanga Te’e, a site with eight fallen Moai and their Pukao (topknots). Some of these topknots fell into the sea when the Moai where toppled but were recovered in 1986. You can really see the red colour of these topknots. In front of the of the ahu is a pania (a ceremonial stone circle).
Next on our tour is Ahu Akahanga, as we arrive a local seller has set up a stall by the entrance and Chris explains the significance of some of the local items such as the Rongo Rongo tablet which contains ancient Rapa Nui writing.
Ahu Akahanga is also known as the “platform of the king” because, according to legend, the tomb of Hoto Matu’a is nearby. There is 4 Ahu, 12 Moai and 8 Pukao, a boat ramp, earth ovens and a small cave that we went it that contained lots of spiders on the ceiling.
We then went to what I think is the most impressive site on the Island, Rano Raraku. Rano is the Easter Island statue quarry and not only are there cavities in the volcanic rock where the moai were carved and removed but many moai are still in various states of completion.
This is where we had to pay the $60 park entry fee which is good for five days so hopefully will not need to pay anything again it has recently gone up from $10 which it was for many years. I don’t mind paying the fee if it helps to preserve the statues.
We walk around the quarry following the designated paths and are not allowed to touch any of the statues, we spend a bit of time here exploring all the moai. Chris explains that the statues are actually in pits buried up to their necks and only 1/3 of the figures are visible, this was so the sculptors could work on the statues back and face.
We walk around the hill a bit to see a moai still attached to the cliff, Chris shows us the tool that the sculptors used to carve the statues; it was basically a hard bit of stone that the used to bang against the soft stone of the moai. We continued to walk around and saw the kneeling moai which has had to have a fence put around it due to people having their pictures taken on it’s knee causing it to get damaged, someone has even carved their initials into its back.
We then walk a bit higher and come across “El Gigante” the largest moai ever carved at 65 feet and estimated to weigh 250 tons, it is still in it’s construction phase and would have been impossible to move if complete.
To finish our tour at Rano Raraku we walk up to the craters rim to see the fresh water lake that is inside. There is also a number of moai in here as well. On the shore of the lake there are a number of reed beds.
We walk back to the bus and move on to our next site, but before we do I have a quick look around the shop but to be honest it is not very good.
We then call at Ahu Tongaiki, probably one of the most photographed Ahu’s on the Island and the biggest. It contains 15 moai that have been recently restored after the Ahu was destroyed in the 1960’s by a Tsunami. On the approach to the Ahu you pass by a lonely moai know as the “Travelling Moai” due to the fact it went on a tour around Japan a few years ago. The size of the 15 statues is immense and with them being on top of their platform increases their scale as you look up at them. There is also some petroglyphs carved into the ground in front of the Ahu showing a turtle.
The penultimate archaeological site of the tour is Ahu Te Pito Kura which has the largest moai that was ever moved at 32 feet and 82 tons. It is also said that Te Pito Kura was the last statue to be pulled down, probably some time after 1838. we walk over to the left side towards the bay where there is a spherical rock about three feet in diameter with four smaller rocks around it. Legend states that Hotu Matu’a brought this stone from his original homeland. The stone is said to have special powers, in fact if you pass a compass over the stone the needle changed direction, which we tested out, I even tried it with my iphone and it did move around.
The final stop on the tour was Anakena beach. We first went to look at the platform with seven moai on it. These are some of the best preserved examples of moai on the Island as they remained protected and undisturbed buried in the sand until they were recently discovered and restored. This is also the site where the only moai eye was found and is on display in the museum which I will be visiting later in the trip.

The mystery of Easter Island and the Moai statues that inhabit it is something that most of us are at least vaguely familiar with, but the fact that there are still so many legitimate unanswered questions surrounding the island is in itself quite remarkable. The story starts on Easter Day in 1722, when a Dutch explorer happened upon something strange. He was originally in search of a hypothetical land mass called Terra Australis, thought to exist only because at the time they thought that the northern and southern hemispheres should be balanced. Instead though, he discovered an island in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean, which he would later name Easter Island due to the date of its discovery. He was surprised to discover that the island was inhabited, and he reported seeing 2,000 to 3,000 people there. This was surprising, because the island is... well… really far from anything else at all. A staggering 1,200 miles away from the nearest inhabited land, and about 2,200 miles off the coast of of Chile. And yet despite its incredible remoteness, The Rapa Nui people who called the island home managed to carve and transport a mind-blowing 887 statues, some measuring 33 feet tall and weighing up to 82 tons, an average of 11 miles each. And this all happened roughly 700 years ago. The biggest remaining question mark concerning the statues themselves is definitely their transportation. Theories have been proposed that involve ropes, sleds, rollers, leveled tracks, or even that the people slowly rocked the statues back and forth to their destination. Attempts have been made to recreate the methods that could have been used, but most resulted in damage to the statues, or would have required hundreds of people making just 0.05 miles of progress per day. The truth is, we don’t really know exactly how they did it. But however the Rapa Nui managed to move the Moai, they would have certainly needed to be incredibly patient, creative, and organized to make them a reality.

Too bad for us considering it is an excellent airline. Easter Island is way in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and LAN has a lock on the route from Santiago. So... we flew LAN. LAN passes out fresh and sanitary pillows, blankets, headsets and eye shades, even in Economy Class which is where we were sitting. My Travel to Isla de Pascua - Easter Island - Ilha de Pascoa
I really enjoyed my stay there and although it is very easy to get everywhere, I would recommend taking a tour.It was hot while I was there and the rooms aren't air conditioned but they do have a ceiling fan. I couldn't (wouldn't) leave the windows open while I was gone because my room backed up to a main street and I didn't want to worry about leaving my photography gear in my room so the room was pretty hot in the afternoon. -

We selected Hotel O'Tai in the center of Hanga Roa for our stay. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park.
Polynesian people settled on Easter Island in the first millennium CE, and created a thriving culture, as evidenced by the moai and other artifacts. However, human activity, the introduction of the Polynesian rat and overpopulation led to gradual deforestation and extinction of natural resources, which caused the demise of the Rapa Nui civilization. By the time of European arrival in 1722, the island's population had dropped to 2,000–3,000 from a high of approximately 15,000 just a century earlier. Diseases carried by European sailors and Peruvian slave raiding of the 1860s further reduced the Rapa Nui population, down to 111 in 1877.
Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. The nearest inhabited land (50 residents) is Pitcairn Island 2,075 kilometres (1,289 mi) away, the nearest town with a population over 500 is Rikitea on island Mangareva 2,606 km (1,619 mi) away, and the nearest continental point lies in central Chile, 3,512 kilometres (2,182 mi) away.

The biggest tourist attractions on Easter Island are the Moai. The Moai are standing upon ceremonial platforms called Ahu.
Please note that the Moai and their platforms are protected by law and should not be approached under any circumstances. Do not walk on the Ahu. It would be an extremely disrespectful gesture and in case you damage the sites, even accidentally, the punishment is severe.
Rano Raraku and Orongo require entrance to the national park that can be bought at the airport upon arrival or, alternatively, at the CONAF office. The same entrance is valid in both locations so make sure you keep your ticket safe. The rest of the island can be visited without an entrance.
Ahus are mostly located along the coastline of the island. First time visitors may be struck by how many archaeological sites there are around the island, where you can be virtually alone depending the season and time of the day.
Each clan typically had an ahu even though not all of them had moais and thus while you drive around the south coast of the island every mile will contain sites where you will see ruins.
Two exceptional sites are the volcanic craters of Rano Kau and Rano Raraku. The slightly inland quarry at "Rano Raraku" is where the majority of moais were created, on a hillside. This 300 foot volcano remnant provided the stones for the great figures and is where a visitor can see various stages of the carving, as well as partially-finished figures scattered around. A climb to the left side of the crater, over the top, and into the bowl, is well worth it. Hiking to the opposite lip of the crater, where the most moai are found, is one of the most dramatic sites on the island.
Similarly, Rano Kau is the remains of a volcanic cinder cone, which like Rano Raraku, is filled with fresh rainwater and has a mottled unearthly appearance that is breathtaking.
Easter Island features two white sand beaches. Anakena, on the north side of the island, is an excellent shorebreak bodysurfing location with a bit of north swell. Even the 1 inch waves barrel (it's also possible to surf in the harbour at Hanga Roa and many of the locals do so). There's a small parking lot, a restroom/changing facility (costing $1 U.S.D.), several small BBQ joints with cold drinks, and a shaded picnic area.
The second beach is a hidden gem called Ovahe, not far from Anakena. This beautiful and desolate beach is surrounded by breathtaking cliffs. Note of caution: the path leading down to the beach is somewhat treacherous and unstable and best reached by foot - driving off-road (contrary to the misguided and somewhat callous actions of some tourists) on most of the island is illegal anyway.
One of the surprising facts is that occasionally a natural phenomenon, great waves, wash away all the sand from Ovahe that slowly returns along with waves. Last time this occurred was in 2012.
Some sources refer that you might sleep overnight in one of the caverns near Ovahe beach but that information is outdated since water now leaks in from the cracks above the cave. Additionally, entering areas without guidance when its dark might be a bad idea.

LAN Chile Airlines is never my first choice in airlines because it is associated with OneWorld (American Airlines). Too bad for us considering it is an excellent airline. Easter Island is way in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and LAN has a lock on the route from Santiago. So... we flew LAN.
LAN passes out fresh and sanitary pillows, blankets, headsets and eye shades, even in Economy Class which is where we were sitting. Tasty meals, individual video on demand in seat backs, pleasant attendants, who could ask for anything more?

I really enjoyed my stay there and although it is very easy to get everywhere, I would recommend taking a tour.It was hot while I was there and the rooms aren't air conditioned but they do have a ceiling fan. I couldn't (wouldn't) leave the windows open while I was gone because my room backed up to a main street and I didn't want to worry about leaving my photography gear in my room so the room was pretty hot in the afternoon.

We selected Hotel O'Tai in the center of Hanga Roa for our stay. Exclusive and uber expensive hotels are Altiplanico and Explora; both of whom include all sights, guides and food in their rates but we were very happy at O'Tai, convenient to all restaurants. And only five minutes from the airport!
Easter Island is 3,700 kilometers/2,300 miles west of South America and the only other way to access by air is from Tahaiti. Occasional cruise lines do include Easter Island in their itineraries. Why visit? For the incredible Maoi (stone statues). In-depth videos of all that we saw and did will follow...
