The simplicity of the Wink Connected Home Hub makes this a bit confusing to some. The Wink Hub is only the hub and a power cable. During configuration you connect it to your wifi (which should have Internet access) and then use the mobile app on iOS or Android to finish the configuration.
The easy steps (which we cover in the video)
- Plug in the wink Hub
- Load the iOS or Android app
- Connect to the Wink Hub and begin configuration
- Add supported devices by simply scanning barcodes or manually looking them up
- Set robots or schedules (or wait for this step till you get more familiar)
- Check access via the Internet when you can outside of your home network
It is pretty much that simple to get configured. We tested the Lutron light control and a Schlage lock set as we show in the video. Both worked on the first attempt and have not failed at all. Adding sensors, thermostats and more lights is in next up. My firmware update completed successfully and I had not connected anything to the hub yet to know if there was improvements. But the update did not hang or crash as some reported.
We placed the Wink Hub away from the wifi access point per the instructions and have not had any connectivity issues from the application or the devices. Everything seems to have stayed connected after testing and usage. Shortcuts are a great timesaver for multiple things you want to do at once. Like turn off all lights, lock certain doors and set a temp on the thermostat when leaving. It does not get much simpler then that for automation.
Another selling point is no fee for usage. I would suggest looking for Wink certified products for now until they integrate better with just the protocols.

Hardware startup Quirky just launched a smarthome hub and app following their recent partnership with GE. What followed was a collaboration with retailer Home Depot and other brands. The Wink Home is meant to bring the future of home automation to more people thanks to it's affordable on-boarding price. The demo you see is an outfitted apartment in New York City. Maybe in the future competitors like Nest and SmartThings will offer similar entry level options.

In this video we take a look at the basic process for getting your Wink Hub, most commonly found at the Home Depot, and GE Link LED Light Bulbs initially setup. The process is fairly basic but we wanted to give people considering this option a first hand experience getting things setup and showing some very basic functionality. As you can see, a few times in the video we ran into issues where the Hub was not functioning properly. It is relatively common to find people having issues getting the Wink Hub setup. We had to scrap one whole take because the Hub wouldn't connect to our router. And we still have some issues with it losing connection with our wireless network. We tried ensuring that the router gave it a static IP address so that it wouldn't have to keep re-leasing, and this seemed to help quite a bit with network stability, but it still hiccups every now and then.

A wink is a facial expression made by briefly closing one eye. A wink is an informal mode of non-verbal communication usually signalling shared hidden knowledge or intent, which may also include, in all contexts, sexual attraction.
Winking is one of the more subtle gestures, usually involving eye contact between those involved. In most cases it is only meant to be known by the sender and his or her intended receiver(s), but in some cases can be more widely intended.

It is also possible for person A to use winking in order to secretly imply to person B that the words or actions of some third party should not be taken seriously (for example, because the third party is joking or lying).

The simplicity of the Wink Connected Home Hub makes this a bit confusing to some. The Wink Hub is only the hub and a power cable. During configuration you connect it to your wifi (which should have Internet access) and then use the mobile app on iOS or Android to finish the configuration.
The easy steps (which we cover in the video)
- Plug in the wink Hub
- Load the iOS or Android app
- Connect to the Wink Hub and begin configuration
- Add supported devices by simply scanning barcodes or manually looking them up
- Set robots or schedules (or wait for this step till you get more familiar)
- Check access via the Internet when you can outside of your home network
It is pretty much that simple to get configured. We tested the Lutron light control and a Schlage lock set as we show in the video. Both worked on the first attempt and have not failed at all. Adding sensors, thermostats and more lights is in next up. My firmware update completed successfully and I had not connected anything to the hub yet to know if there was improvements. But the update did not hang or crash as some reported.
We placed the Wink Hub away from the wifi access point per the instructions and have not had any connectivity issues from the application or the devices. Everything seems to have stayed connected after testing and usage. Shortcuts are a great timesaver for multiple things you want to do at once. Like turn off all lights, lock certain doors and set a temp on the thermostat when leaving. It does not get much simpler then that for automation.
Another selling point is no fee for usage. I would suggest looking for Wink certified products for now until they integrate better with just the protocols.

In this video we take a look at the basic process for getting your Wink Hub, most commonly found at the Home Depot, and GE Link LED Light Bulbs initially setup. The process is fairly basic but we wanted to give people considering this option a first hand experience getting things setup and showing some very basic functionality. As you can see, a few times in the video we ran into issues where the Hub was not functioning properly. It is relatively common to find people having issues getting the Wink Hub setup. We had to scrap one whole take because the Hub wouldn't connect to our router. And we still have some issues with it losing connection with our wireless network. We tried ensuring that the router gave it a static IP address so that it wouldn't have to keep re-leasing, and this seemed to help quite a bit with network stability, but it still hiccups every now and then.
We are planning on making a follow-up video in the future regarding updates and any fixes for the stability issues that we discover. Let us know in the comments what you would most like to see! And don't forget to subscribe to help us build up a community revolving around the Internet of Things!
