Monk seals are earless seals of the tribe Monachini. They are the only earless seals found in tropical climates. There are three species of monk seal: the Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus; the Hawaiian monk seal, Neomonachus schauinslandi; and the Caribbean monk seal, Neomonachus tropicalis, which went extinct in the 20th century. The two surviving species are now extremely rare and in imminent danger of extinction.
The three monk seal species were classified in the same genus, Monachus, until, in 2014, following comparison of the mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequence of all three species, biologists placed the Caribbean and Hawaiian species in a new genus, Neomonachus. Fossils of the Mediterranean and Caribbean species are known from the Pleistocene. The time of divergence between the Hawaiian and Caribbean species, 3.7 million years (Ma) ago, corresponds to the closing of the Central American Seaway by the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. The divergence between Mediterranean seals and the New World clade was dated to 6.3 Ma ago.
Hawaiian Monk seals are a critically endangered group of warm water seals that are only found in the Hawaiian archipelago. Only about 1,200 of the animals remain. Jonathan sets course for the Forbidden Island of Ni'ihau to meet some of these reclusive animals, and gets a fascinating insight into the lonely world of the Monk seal. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! No one i've talked with has ever seen this behavior before from a Hawaiian Monk Seal. I've seen them 'play' with puffer fish... but never a sea turtle. Both the monk seal and sea turtle are juveniles. This sighting was called into the NOAA Monk Seal Hotline on Maui and the video has been shared with them. If you see a monk seal on land please don't approach him/her and call 808-292-2372 Also check out this video of a RARE endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle eating a Frog Fish: https://youtu.be/YHRSmHY-iuA http://HawaiianPaddleSports.com 808-442-6436 Maui Hawaii.

Crittercam reveals crucial evidence that could solve the Northwest Hawaiian Islands mysterious monk seal deaths — the only endangered marine mammals found entirely within the United States. While most adults are healthy, eight out of ten Hawaiian monk seal pups are dying before age two. With the help of three juvenile seals, Wild Chronicles follows the Crittercam crew collects evidence of natural and man-made dangers in the marine environment and discovers a key feeding ground in a deep sea plain once thought to be a wasteland — evidence that will play a critical role in saving the monk seal from extinction.
R5AY aka Honey Girl gave birth to a pup on 2/25/15 on the North Shore of Oahu. At 10:00am her water broke and the pup was born at 2:25pm. This 10 minute video is of the birth of the pup.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the seal is currently pregnant with her seventh known child.
LIHUE, Hawaii -- Federal authorities are asking for the public's help to identify a man seen on video apparently beating an endangered, pregnant Hawaiian monk seal, reports CBS affiliate KHNL. The 18-second long video was shot around 7:45 Tuesday night at Kauai's Salt Pond Beach. It appears to show a man repeatedly striking a monk seal in the shallow water. Wildlife officials say the animal, identified as RK30, is about 17 years old and pregnant. She has survived many hardships including shark bites and a fishing line wrapped so tightly around her neck that she is permanently scarred by it. "She's a well-known adult here on Kauai for being a survivor as well as being an excellent mother," said Jammie Thomton, NOAA Kauai Marine Mammal Response Coordinator. The video was posted on Faceboo...
It was taken Tuesday evening at Salt Pond Beach Park.

(She!) She told me that she loved me,
And like a fool I believed her from the start
(She!) She said she'd never hurt me,
But then she turned around and broke my heart.
Why am I standing here
Missing her and wishing she were here?
(Hey!) She only did me wrong
(Hey!) I'm better off alone.
(She!) She devoured all my sweet love,
Took all I had and then she fed me dirt
(She!) She laughed while I was crying
It was such a joke to see the way it hurt.
Why am I standing here
Missing her and wishing she were here?
(Hey!) She only did me wrong
(Hey!) I'm better off alone.
And now I know just why she keeps me hanging 'round,
(Hanging 'round)
She needs someone to walk on so her feet don't touch the ground
(Don't touch the ground)
But I love her! (Love her!)
I need her! (Need her!)
I want her! (Want her!)
Yeah! (Yeah!) Yeah! (Yeah!)
Yeah!-Yeah!-Yeah!-Yeah!-She!
SOLO
Why am I standing here
Missing her and wishing she were here?
(Hey!) She only did me wrong, now
(Hey!) I'm better off alone.
(She!) Why am I missing her?
(She!) I should be kissing her!
(She!) Why am I missing her?
(She!) I should be kissing her!
