Today, we’re heading deep, deep into the Amazon - to a place you can only reach by float plane - and that’s because this time, Steve Townson and I are looking for something really special.
STEVE: Today I am gong to take you to see one of the most dangerous river monsters there is… the electric eel… Now I am a little bit nervous about this… and a little scared too because they are known to kill people. You wait until you see this.
Electric eels, as it turns out are not actually eels.They come from the knife fish family. They are closer to Carp and catfish than they are true eels… They are air breathers that like to inhabit the swamps and creeks around here. And that’s where Steve starts his hunt.
These eels we’re looking for can grow to 8.2 feet or about 2 and a half meters. They can weigh up to 44 lbs or 20 Kilos. According to some sources, they can put out a electric jolt of up 900 Volts which is more than enough to stop a human heart.
Electric eels create their voltage by using 80% of their body mass to store 6000 or so cells that act like tiny batteries. Once fully charged, the eel can release all that stored energy at once, or in a series of jolts, depending on the needs of the situation. In this case, a caiman thought it might go for an eel dinner. but the eel used a full jolt to show the caiman it’s fatal mistake.
There are many ways to catch electric eels. Some indians lure them into a pool of poisoned water. Jeremy Wade from River Monsters fame likes to use a lasso… but Steve likes to stick with small circle hooks…
One way not to catch them is like this. In this video, the fisherman learns the hard way that it’s not a good idea to stand in the water while trying to catch them… Luckily his friends pulled him out of the water before he drowned… and he survived unhurt…
Now that we see it up close, look how small those eyes are... That’s because electric eels don’t use their eyes very much. Instead they use electrical impulses as radar to move around and even hunt prey….
Now the trick will be getting him off the hook without getting shocked. We should have brought rubber gloves, but then again, why spend money on that when a twig will do the job for free.
STEVE - There ya go a real Amazon river monster…. that thing could kill you.
On the way home, we stopped to get some underwater footage of electric eels at this creek we found…We wanted to see better how they move themselves around so well without a big tail fin.
Now look on the bottom of the fish here. You see these fantails that run along the bottom of the eel. These are actually very long anal fins used to propel the fish. Depending on how they are used, they can propel the fish forward, in reverse, up, and down. Very cool.

Well, Today I went up a remote creek In the middle of No-Where trying to spot some eels... The only thing was, I forgot my fishing rod!?!?! So after spotting an absolute GIANT, I raced back to my house and grabbed my Fishing rod. After arriving I dropped the bait (Beef Heart) Into the water and within a matter of seconds I had hooked an absolute BEAST!!!

Eels (Anguilliformes; 
/æŋˌɡwɪlɨˈfɔrmiːz/) are an order of fish, which consists of four suborders, 20 families, 111 genera and approximately 800 species. Most eels are predators. The term "eel" is also used for some other similarly shaped fish, such as electric eels and spiny eels, but these are not members of the Anguilliformes order.
Eels are elongated fish, ranging in length from 5 centimetres (2.0 in) in the one-jawed eel (Monognathus ahlstromi) to 4 metres (13 ft) in the slender giant moray. Adults range in weight from 30 grams to well over 25 kilograms. They possess no pelvic fins, and many species also lack pectoral fins. The dorsal and anal fins are fused with the caudal or tail fin, forming a single ribbon running along much of the length of the animal. Most eels live in the shallow waters of the ocean and burrow into sand, mud, or amongst rocks. A majority of eel species are nocturnal, and thus are rarely seen. Sometimes, they are seen living together in holes, or "eel pits". Some species of eels also live in deeper water on the continental shelves and over the slopes deep as 4,000 metres (13,000 ft). Only members of the Anguillidae family regularly inhabit fresh water, but they too return to the sea to breed.

Today, we’re heading deep, deep into the Amazon - to a place you can only reach by float plane - and that’s because this time, Steve Townson and I are looking for something really special.
STEVE: Today I am gong to take you to see one of the most dangerous river monsters there is… the electric eel… Now I am a little bit nervous about this… and a little scared too because they are known to kill people. You wait until you see this.
Electric eels, as it turns out are not actually eels.They come from the knife fish family. They are closer to Carp and catfish than they are true eels… They are air breathers that like to inhabit the swamps and creeks around here. And that’s where Steve starts his hunt.
These eels we’re looking for can grow to 8.2 feet or about 2 and a half meters. They can weigh up to 44 lbs or 20 Kilos. According to some sources, they can put out a electric jolt of up 900 Volts which is more than enough to stop a human heart.
Electric eels create their voltage by using 80% of their body mass to store 6000 or so cells that act like tiny batteries. Once fully charged, the eel can release all that stored energy at once, or in a series of jolts, depending on the needs of the situation. In this case, a caiman thought it might go for an eel dinner. but the eel used a full jolt to show the caiman it’s fatal mistake.
There are many ways to catch electric eels. Some indians lure them into a pool of poisoned water. Jeremy Wade from River Monsters fame likes to use a lasso… but Steve likes to stick with small circle hooks…
One way not to catch them is like this. In this video, the fisherman learns the hard way that it’s not a good idea to stand in the water while trying to catch them… Luckily his friends pulled him out of the water before he drowned… and he survived unhurt…
Now that we see it up close, look how small those eyes are... That’s because electric eels don’t use their eyes very much. Instead they use electrical impulses as radar to move around and even hunt prey….
Now the trick will be getting him off the hook without getting shocked. We should have brought rubber gloves, but then again, why spend money on that when a twig will do the job for free.
STEVE - There ya go a real Amazon river monster…. that thing could kill you.
On the way home, we stopped to get some underwater footage of electric eels at this creek we found…We wanted to see better how they move themselves around so well without a big tail fin.
Now look on the bottom of the fish here. You see these fantails that run along the bottom of the eel. These are actually very long anal fins used to propel the fish. Depending on how they are used, they can propel the fish forward, in reverse, up, and down. Very cool.

Electric eels create their voltage by using 80% of their body mass to store 6000 or so cells that act like tiny batteries. Once fully charged, the eel can release all that stored energy at once, or in a series of jolts, depending on the needs of the situation. In this case, a caiman thought it might go for an eel dinner. but the eel used a full jolt to show the caiman it’s fatal mistake.
There are many ways to catch electric eels. Some indians lure them into a pool of poisoned water. Jeremy Wade from River Monsters fame likes to use a lasso… but Steve likes to stick with small circle hooks…
One way not to catch them is like this. In this video, the fisherman learns the hard way that it’s not a good idea to stand in the water while trying to catch them… Luckily his friends pulled him out of the water before he drowned… and he survived unhurt…
Now that we see it up close, look how small those eyes are... That’s because electric eels don’t use their eyes very much. Instead they use electrical impulses as radar to move around and even hunt prey….
Now the trick will be getting him off the hook without getting shocked. We should have brought rubber gloves, but then again, why spend money on that when a twig will do the job for free.
STEVE - There ya go a real Amazon river monster…. that thing could kill you.
On the way home, we stopped to get some underwater footage of electric eels at this creek we found…We wanted to see better how they move themselves around so well without a big tail fin.
Now look on the bottom of the fish here. You see these fantails that run along the bottom of the eel. These are actually very long anal fins used to propel the fish. Depending on how they are used, they can propel the fish forward, in reverse, up, and down. Very cool.

There are over 400 species of eel.
Eels live in both saltwater and fresh water.
Even though the eel looks like a snake it is really a fish. They have long, narrow bodies with long dorsal and anal fins. Most eels have no scales. The eel’s backbone is made up of over 100 vertebrae which makes it very flexible.
Eels have gills and very sharp teeth.
Most eels hide and live in caves and rock crevices. They also burrow in the sand. These behaviors allow them to surprise and attack their prey. Some eels will actually chase their prey. The rocks also provide protection for the eel.
Some species of eels travel up to 4,000 miles to breed. This journey can take the eel over seven months to finish. While on the journey, the eel doesn’t eat.
After the eel breeds, it dies. It takes a young eel three years to become an adult.
Eels begin life as a flat, transparent larvae. Eel larvae drift in the surface waters of the sea feeding on dissolved nutrients. Eel larvae change into glass eels and again into elvers before finally becoming an adult.
Most moray eels average 5 feet in length. The largest species, the slender giant moray eel, can grow to 13 feet in length.
Eel is a delicacy in many cultures. The eel must must be cooked thoroughly because its blood is toxic.
The electric eel is a South American freshwater fish found mainly in the Amazon River basin. The electric charge is produced by special organs along the sides of the eel’s body.
The electric discharge from an electric eel can be stronger than 500 volts. The eel uses the electric charge against its predators and to catch its prey.
Eels (often typeset as eels or EELS) is an American alternative rock band, formed in California in 1995 by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known by the stage name "E." Band members have changed across the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for most of the band's work. Often filled with themes about family, death and lost love, Eels' music straddles a wide range of genres, which is evidenced by the distinct musical style of every album. Since 1996, Eels has released eleven studio albums, seven of which charted in the Billboard 200.Their most recent The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett (2014) was followed by a live album in 2015.
