AFL 2016 round 7: the Friday Furnace

After a couple of improved performances in round six, the Eagles and Dockers face a couple of 'Giant' challenges this week.

Fremantle literally, with a home clash against a red-hot GWS side, and the Eagles with a daunting away match-up against a Geelong side who absolutely demolished Gold Coast last week.

Brendan Foster, Tim Carrier and Peter Bell preview the weekend's AFL action.

Greater Western Sydney are yet to win in Perth in six attempts and the Eagles haven't won away in their last five attempts (and not in Geelong since 2006) so seeing if these teams can turn their form lines around is one of the questions on football fans' lips ahead of round seven.

Another is whether the reigning premiers can bounce back from a disappointing defeat to GWS against bogey side Richmond on Friday night.

The Tigers have won three of their last four clashes against the Hawks who will be missing inspirational leader Luke Hodge and fullback James Frawley.

However, it's been a long time since Hawthorn lost two in a row and Richmond are also missing a couple of their best players as well in Trent Cotchin (injured) and Alex Rance (suspension).

Round seven also throws up several other interesting match-ups with several games that could prove difficult for tipsters, including a Saturday night blockbuster between two likely finalists in Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs.

And so we bring you the round seven Friday Furnace ... fanning the flames on the burning topics of the weekend of AFL ahead, led by dual Kangaroos premiership hero and ex-Fremantle captain and 6PR broadcaster Peter Bell.

Peter Bell (6PR presenter and footy broadcaster):

The Burning Question: Will Hawthorn's bogey side Richmond consign the Hawks to consecutive losses?

Brendan Foster (WAtoday sports writer and resident hippie):

Question: If the Eagles don't beat the Cat this weekend, then West Coast will simply be making up the numbers come finals time.
Headline: Eagles swoop on slow Cats
Pick: Fremantle is paying $3.50 at home to beat the red-hot Giants. The Giants haven't scored more than 12 goals on all their visits to Perth, so if Freo can close them down, the Dockers are a sniff.
Tune In: Bulldogs v the Crows at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. Two attacking, free-flowing teams. Should be a beauty. Also don't be surprised if the Saints v Kangaroos game at the same venue on Sunday is a belter. Tune Out: Pies v Blues at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Just can't bear the thought of the camera panning into Pies' boss Eddie McGuire's goofy mug, time and bloody time again.

Tim Carrier (Fantasy football addict and social media producer at WAtoday):

Question: Pretenders or contenders? Can West Coast win on the road?

Pick: Lance Franklin to kick more goals than Essendon is $12. I also think the Eagles are good value against the Cats on Saturday afternoon.
Tune In: West Coast v Geelong could be a classic with the Eagles out to break their away hoodoo. Tune Out: To both clashes on Mother's Day and give your mum some attention instead.

The last match between the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide, the 2015 Elimination Final, was an absolute cracker.

Simon White (WAtoday editor and chief puppet hater):

Question: Will West Coast put up or be shut up on the road against Geelong?
Headline: Crows put bite on Dogs in 40-goal thriller
Pick: If Hawthorn doesn't put Richmond to the sword in clinical fashion tonight then I reckon the Hawks reign is over.
Tune In: Gold Coast v Melbourne. Not sure it will be pretty but someone's dream of finals footy is likely going to be dashed on Saturday.
