I started making videos about my country as a way to stay connected to it but later on also started to share my experience in the US as a foreigner. In love with these brilliant wines from Slovenia
In you haven't tried Slovenian wines yet seek out Edu Simcic's delicious labels. Thanks to Greg Rivera from August Importers for this lovely tasting at La Bodega de Méndez in Puerto Rico. The whites are truly Burgundian in style and the reds are so right bank Bordeaux in style. Thanks for watching, liking, commenting, sharing and subscribing to the channel. Cheers!

Bordered by four countries and with a long, varied history of being a part of different states and empires, Slovenia is today an independent country with a beautiful melody of languages, cultures and cuisines.
Welcome to ThingsToDo CHannel we publish new videos every day, so be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.
Check out these 10 must-try Slovenian foods and drinks that recall the history of its neighbors and its landscapes.
Slovenian craft beer.
If you’re eating Slovenian food, you’ll want to accompany it with Slovenian beer (pivo). Slovenian beer is in the midst of a renaissance. Although mass-produced domestic brands like Lasko and Union still dominate the market, new microbreweries are continually popping up and pumping out a range of quality Slovenian craft beers.
Carniolan Sausage.
For its size, Slovenia packs a mighty punch on the gastronomy scene: there are 23 gastronomic regions and 170 distinct dishes claimed by this small central European country.
Slovenian wine.
Slovenia has been growing grapes and producing wine for thousands of years. The country has over 28,000 vineyards and produces between 80 and 90 million litres of wine every year.
Gibanica.
Gibanica is a layered cake filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins, and ricotta. It’s probably the most popular sweet in Slovenia and is typically eaten for breakfast. The cake originally hails from the Prekmurje region in the country’s far northeast (bordering Hungary), but you’ll find it all over the country.
Slovenian Spirits.
While Slovenians love beer and wine, there’s really only one national drink: schnapps. Called zganje in the local lingo, making the stuff is also a national past-time, and although you can buy factory-made bottles of schnapps in liquor stores and supermarkets, it’s the locally made zganje brewed in someone’s garage that’s usually the best. Thankfully, you don’t have to know anyone to sample some of the finest schnapps in Slovenia, because you can count on all self-respecting bars across the country to stock some of the best local varieties in a wide variety of flavors, including pear, peach, lemon, and blueberry.
Grilled Trout.
Home to many beautiful lakes and countless rivers and mountain streams, Slovenia is a country where fish is often found on menus. The ultimate fish to try in Slovenia is river trout. After a day of outdoor fun, make sure to order a whole grilled trout with some mashed potatoes on the side. If you’re going to have any traditional Slovenian food, let it be grilled trout.
Veal Stew with Lard and Buckwheat Mush.
As a historically rural country with a significant agricultural background, Slovenia loves its stews. There are many different types of stews, their ingredients ranging from vegetables to all types of meats and even actual intestines. This fantastic veal stew with lard and the typical complementary buckwheat mush before heading out for a hike in the Julian Alps in Triglav National Park.
Cheese Dumplings.
Another typical Slovenian food is cheese dumplings. These dumplings contain cottage cheese and are sometimes sprinkled with a little bit of sugar to give it a somewhat sweet taste. Served with sour cream, this is another hearty Slovenian dish—excellent to fill your stomach after an active day of sightseeing.
Steak with Truffles.
Truffles are a much-used ingredient in Istria, the coastal region that extends between Slovenia and northern Croatia. This quaint region is home to extensive old oak forests, which happen to be the perfect habitat for truffles. As it is rather difficult to find good truffles—dogs are specifically trained to find truffles that are buried deep in between the oaks’ roots—they tend to be quite pricey. It’s absolutely worth splurging on a dish that contains truffles, though. They taste, unlike any other mushroom that you’ve ever tasted.
Slovenian Doughnuts: Krofi.
Every culture seems to have its own fried dough and of course, we want to try them all. Krofi are special because they come with a beautiful, bright hint of citrus, thanks to lemon zest. Try krofi that has a layer of apricot jam inside- a favorite Slovenian flavor.

Pan-European electoral lists could ensure voters vote on European rather than national issues
Besides reducing Parliament’s size from 751 to 705 elected representatives, a proposed re-distribution of seats, approved by the Constitutional Affairs Committee on Tuesday, would also place 46 of the 73 UK seats to be freed up by Brexit in a reserve.
Some or all of the 46 seats in the reserve could then be reallocated to new countries joining the EU and/or pan-European electoral lists. The other 27 former UK seats would be distributed among the 14 EU countries that are currently slightly under-represented.
Pan-European electoral lists are the most controversial element of the proposal, some think it will make MEPs more remote for citizens, others think the move will mean that voters can focus on European issues rather than national ones.
The committee agreed that the number of MEPs ele...

What's the story narratives of EU reforms in parliaments and the media. Public debate
In the first session we presented the key findings of an analysis of debates on the future of Europe in 11 national parliaments and the European Parliament between 2015-2021 presented in a report “What future for Europe? Political actors’ narratives on European integration and democracy in national parliaments (2015-2021)”, edited by Magdalena Góra, Elodie Thevenin and Katarzyna Zielińska. The launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe on 9th of May 2021 has initiated an intensive process of consultations on reforms of the EU with citizens. However, the Conference is situated within the broader context of debates on the future of Europe (FoE) that has been taking place with various intensity since 2015. Brussels Insider - Transparency: Are decision makers in the EU held responsible?
In the third episode of The Brussels Insider series we explore the topic of transparency in the European Union.
The European Union is often seen as a far away institution built on back-handed agreements and secret negotiations with nobody to hold the process or people accountable. Is this really the truth? Is the EU as opaque as some actors would have us believe, or is there more to the story?
We spoke with MEP Colm Markey and Parliamentary Assistant Una Clarke, both of whom have first hand experience with the EU's transparency measures. We also got the point of view of Vitor Teixiera - a Senior Policy Officer at Transparency International EU - an organisation whose mission is to prevent corruption and promote integrity, transparency and accountability in EU institutions, policies and le...

The sustainable development of democracy in Europe cannot be taken for granted. We witness tendencies in the form of external threats (Russian expansionism, Islamic terrorism, etc.) as well as internal forces (the rise of populism, anti-European sentiments and political extremism) that are detrimental for democratic political life. There is a widespread perception of the inefficiency of democratic institutions and of a detachment of political elites from the need...

What Role for the European Parliament in the COVID-19 Crisis?
The COVID-19 crisis poses a particular problem for parliamentary democracy: internally, the European Parliament needs to adapt to a sudden process of digitalisation and remote participation; externally, the crisis disrupts legislative processes and the capacity to shape policy. Therefore, the COVID-19 crisis is a test to the institutional resilience of the European Parliament and its capacity to play a relevant role. This webinar offers an opportunity to discuss how the digitalisation of the EP has affected internal procedures and the role of different actors – from MEPs to EP staff. It also offers an opportunity to reflect about how the lockdown has shifted the position of the EP in the inter-institutional triangle and how it might affect its parliamentary role in the long term. This is p...

The Western Balkans and the Eastern Neighbourhood | #PPCLjubljana
On 1 July 2021, Portugal handed over the Presidency of the Council of the EU to Slovenia, which will hold its reigns for the second time since its accession to the EU in 2004.
During the next six months, the Slovenian Presidency will have to sail through troubled waters to address some of the most pressing EU issues, such as the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the European Green Deal, the digital agenda and EU’s relations with its external partners.
To scrutinise the priorities and challenges of the Presidency, TEPSA and its Slovenian member institute, Centre of International Relations (CIR) – University of Ljubljana, hosted the Slovenian Pre-Presidency Conference on 17 and 18 June 2021

STORYLINE:
When he visited Ukraine last month with two other European leaders, Prime Minister Janez Jansa of Slovenia was looking to show solidarity with the war-stricken nation and to attract support at home ahead of what is expected to be a close parliamentary election.
The election set for Sunday is taking place amid heightened political divisions in Slovenia.
Observers say the vote will determine whether the small Alpine nation of 2 million people slides further into right-wing populism under Jansa or returns to its traditionally moderate balance.
Recent opinion surveys showed Jansa's Slovenian Democratic Party running tight with the Freedom Movement, a newly formed liberal-green political party.
The party is led by a U.S.-educated expert, Robert Golob, who has promised to unite centrist and left-oriented groups in a future coalition government.
Both parties appeared to have voter support hovering around 20%.
Polls showed several smaller left- and right-leaning groups trailing in the race for seats in Slovenia's 90-member national legislature.
Some surveys suggested 20% of the electorate remained undecided.
With no single party likely to secure enough votes to form a government on its own, analysts predicted Golob would have a better chance than Jansa at cobbling together a post-election coalition.
The 63-year-old Jansa, a veteran politician, took over as head of government at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, succeeding a liberal who resigned.
While the prime minister has boasted of economic successes during tough times, critics have sounded alarm over his increasingly authoritarian course.
Known as a nature-loving nation of stunning scenic beauty, Slovenia was long regarded as a post-Communist success and one of the most stable countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
Slovenia was among 10 countries that joined the European Union in May 2004, the bloc's largest single expansion.
But it has come under EU scrutiny as Jansa has forged close relations with fellow populist, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Orban and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic - another right-wing regional leader - recently scored sweeping reelection victories.
Since he became the Slovenian Democratic Party's leader in 1993, Jansa has served as both defense minister and prime minister multiple times, faced a corruption trial and engaged in constant spats with journalists.

The committee agreed that the number of MEPs elected from an EU-wide electoral constituency in the future should match the number of EU countries, as soon as the completion of the ongoing EU electoral law reform allows it.

Parliaments (national and European) have been playing a special role in such debates as they form arenas where Members of (European) Parliament negotiate ideas, opinions, policy proposals representing interests of their respective (national) constituencies and political parties and as such mobilize mass support.

We also got the point of view of Vitor Teixiera - a Senior Policy Officer at Transparency International EU - an organisation whose mission is to prevent corruption and promote integrity, transparency and accountability in EU institutions, policies and legislation.
Speakers:
Vitor Teixiera - Senior Policy Officer - Eu Political Integrity. Transparency International EU.
Una Clarke - Accredited Parliamentary Assistant to MEP Frances Fitzgerald - European Parliament.
Colm Markey - MEP from the Midlands-Northwest constituency Ireland - European Parliament.

There is a widespread perception of the inefficiency of democratic institutions and of a detachment of political elites from the needs and interests of ordinary citizens, resulting in decreasing political trust in a number of the EU states. How can we strengthen democratic legitimacy as well as enhance problem-solving capacity in the EU? How do we strike a balance between national sovereignty and implementation of common EU policy solutions? How to improve the efficiency of both the consensual democracy (the European Council) and the parliamentary democracy (the European Parliament) at the EU level?

This is particularly important in view of the upcoming Conference on the Future of Europe.

In this panel, Dr. Natasha Wunsch (Assistant Professor, Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics, Sciences Po) seeks to answer to what extent have EU tools to promote democracy and rule of law worked to bring change to the EU neighbourhood? Panellists include Dr. Irena Rajchinovska Pandeva (Vice-Dean for Science and International Cooperation, Iustinianus Primus Law Faculty at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University), Dr. Yuriy Yakymenko (President, Razumkov Centre), Dr. Florent Marciacq (Senior Fellow at Centre International de Formation Européenne), and Peter Grk (National Coordinator for the Western Balkans, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Slovenia)
Natasha Wunsch also contributed to the TEPSA Recommendations to the incoming Slovenian Presidency, on the topic of enlargement and the Western Balkans
