Turlough O'Carolan's Si Bheag Si Mhor Performed by Chrissy Steinbock
My student Chrissy Steinbock (Ottawa) performs the song Si Bheag Si Mhor (The Little Fairy Hill and the Big Fairy Hill) by 18th century Irish Harpist Turough O'Carolan. The song is sung in Irish Gaelic and tells the tale of a war between two armies of fairies. Morning in Wicklow Mountains
The Wicklow Mountains (Irish: Sléibhte Chill Mhantáin (older Irish name Sliabh Cualann from their location in the territory of Cualu); including at the northern end the Dublin Mountains) are a range of mountains in the southeast of Ireland. They run in a north-south direction from south County Dublin across County Wicklow and into County Wexford. Lugnaquilla is the highest peak in the range at 925 m (3035 ft), Mullaghcleevaun at 847 m (2780 ft) is the second highest. The River Slaney has its source southwest of Lugnaquilla and then flows south along the western slopes of the mountains for some 72 km (45 mi) before entering the St George's Channel at Wexford. The Turlough Hill power station is the only pumped storage hydroelectricity scheme in Ireland; it is located on the Wicklow Gap midway between Hollywood and Glendalough. Wicklow Mountains National Park was established by the government in 1991 and is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The whole area is much frequented, especially at weekends, by Dubliners, as the region offers multiple choices of recreation, ranging from fishing to rafting to hill walking. Also in its midst lies the monastic settlement of Glendalough, believed to have been founded by St. Kevin, and now a popular tourist attraction; as well as Powerscourt Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Ireland. The southern limits of the Wicklow Mountains are set by Croghan Mountain, the highest point on the Wicklow-Wexford border and the scene ...

Turlough O'Carolan's Si'beg agus Si'mor 001.AVI
My best impression of a great song. I don't do this tune much justice, but I love to play it! I think the title translates to "little hill, big hill". I believe it is based on a Celtic tale about a battle between two fairy tribes. I am not 100% certain. I am playing this tune in dropped D and was taught by Stacy Hobbs. Check him out on youtube...He is the deal!!

Si Bheag Si Mhor
A lovely old Irish Folk tune by Turlough O'Carolan. For somebody very special. This is said to have been O'Carolan's first song. The title translates as "The little fairy hill and the big fairy hill" and is said to be based upon a local legend about a war between two fairy armies. This is an arrangement by Keith Chappell who plays this in related vids on acoustic and beautifully. Thanks Keith. I tend to play things slower and over-romanticise in all I play. With this I hope it hasn't lost it's Celtic feel.

PHIL HARE - WATERLOO SUNSET/BLIND MARY/BOYS FROM BLUE HILL
The last vid of this was shot from a distance 3 years ago at a festival. This follows a request for a close-up version from Simon & Dave. Hope this is OK guys! Three tunes: an instrumental of the great Ray Davies pop hit 'Waterloo Sunset', a version of 'Blind Mary' by O'Carolan and a fun vamp through a popular Irish hornpipe-type thing called 'Boys From Blue Hill'. Tuning is just 'dropped D'.

Si Bheag and Si Mhor - O'Carolan
This is taken from my new book 'O'Carolan for the 5 String Banjo'. 20 great tunes and tabs all played note for note on the accompanying CD. If anyone would like a copy please contact me at ronh2510@virginmedia.com. This is such a lovely tune it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up! I just love O'Carolan his tunes fall so beautifully on the Banjo. I'm told that Si Bheag means small hill and Si Mhor means large hill. The story goes that there was a battle between the Fairies who occupied the large and small hills and that after much bloodshed a truce was called to unite them against a common enemy - an invasion by another clan of Fairies. This was O'Carolans' first tune that he composed at the age of 21 (makes it about 1691/2). Hope you like it.

"Si Bheag Si Mhor" ~ A Morning Multi-Minstrel Musical Menagerie ~ FlaRF11
The classic Turlough O'Carolan tune "Si Bheag, Si Mhor" performed by a marvelous mash-up of musicians at the 2011 Florida Renaissance Festival. This performance was filmed during a special morning jam session for the fun of the musicians just as the festival was opening for the day. It includes various minstrels from most of the musical groups performing at the Festival playing a variety of instruments, including historical reproduction pieces. Featuring: - Jay and Abby Michaels (from The Harper and The Minstrel) with Jay on harp and Abby on flute. - kathleen Finnegan-Blackshear and Bret Blackshear with kathleen on harp and Bret on cello. - Michael Gartner (aka "Micha" from Wolgemut) playing a reproduction of a medieval vielle. - Jack Stamates (from Celtic Mayhem) on violin. - Mark and Ehrich Gauvin (from Iron Hill Vagabonds), with Mark on guitar and Ehrich playing violin. - Bobby Rodriguez (from Bobby Rodriguez Productions) playing bass. - Owain Phyfe (from New World Renaissance Band) playing the Chitarra Battente (a type of Italian renaissance guitar) - Tyler Morrison (from Revelers' Round Dance Company) playing the large recorder. - Lady Merilee Effingham (Courtesan) - ?? I'm not sure what instrument she is playing, I think it is a lute variant but I need to double-check with her. ======================================= The Song "Si Bheg, Si Mhor" (roughly translated as "Little Fairy, Big Fairy") is a beloved Irish tune penned by Turlough O'Carolan (born 1670, died ...

O' Carolan's Concerto
I wanted to do a song for st Patrick's day so I researched on the net for a good song and learned about Turlough O'Carolan--a prolific and well-known composer of the 18th century in Ireland.
It took me about month of regular practice to arrange, learn, and memorize the song to be performance ready.
I recorded this video using a canon Vixia hfs100. I used a homemade light box for the lighting. I mounted the camera to my guitar headstock using my custom built guitar cam mount (http://www.johnclarkemusic.com/guitarcam/). I recorded the audio into logic pro. I used a stereo mic configuration (km184 and NTK1) with the art MPA II preamp. I edited the video with Final Cut X.
The guitar is a Rodriguez model by Kenny Hill.
There is a cameo appearance in this video of my ukulele.
If your interested in learning this song on guitar you can get the sheet music here: http://www.johnclarkemusic.com/ocarolans-concerto/

One of Turlough O'Carolan's most popular compositions, "the little fairy hill and the big fairy hill" - a fine pair of hills in ireland with traces of iron age inhabitation.

Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór on my Martin Doyle Celtic Style D flute
First video recording of my Martin Doyle flute. It's in low D and in his Celtic style design (the bore is the same as his more traditional Irish flute design). Here's the only one thing I hate about my new Canon G12 camera - there's no AF in video mode, so you can't change focal point while shooting. Focusing has to be done before recording, which is severely limiting. Whoever comes up with this?! But hopefully the sound is good enough. (sounds like I'm wasting a lot of air though...) The tune Si Bheag Si Mhor roughly translates as "Fairy Mounds (or Little Hill, Big Hill)" and was composed by the blind Irish harpist Turlough O'Carolan who lived in the 18th century. It's a tune about a battle between fairies (who lived under the hills). Martin Doyle's website: www.martindoyleflutes.com

Sheebeg and Sheemore
Some Celtic-Irish guitar stuff here... Sheebeg and Sheemore is an anglicized of the Gaelic for "The Little Hill And The Big Hill". The title refers to the site of a fabulous battle between rivals factions of the "good people". Tradition has it that this was Carolan´s first composition. (Dave Evans version) Blueridge BR-163

Sheebeg Sheemor - - KelticDead
This is one of Turlough OCarolan's first arrangements, and there have been many variations and arrangements from his time (17th Century Ireland). Turlough OCarolan was blinded by Smallpox when he was 16, and fortunately, was gifted in playing music and tunes, and his family sent him out as one of the many travelling minstrels in that day. Travelling minstrels in those days was a respected profession, and Turlough is credited in creating over 200 tunes and songs. This tune was one of his first compositions suggested to Turlough by his patron. In that area, there were legends of a mighty, ancient battle by two forces. It was believed that both leaders of the conflict became mortally wounded, and both were buried on the top of two hills, still seen today. The name of the tune is in Gaelic and can be spelled many ways, as Gaelic was a "non-literate" (no writing) language. The word, "Si" (pronounced "Shee) can mean "hill" (specifically an enchanted hill). "Beg" means small, and "mor" means big or large. The tune has become known as one of OCarolan's greatest tunes. I've added a third part to his first two expressions that I think plays well with the low-D, diatonic harmonica, and still keeps the feel and tradition of this Celtic-Irish tune. Finding new ways to play traditional Celtic tunes is what makes this kind of music fun.
