NUI Maynooth College Burning Canteen Fire
The day of the burning exploding canteen. Possibly the best university open day of many people's young lives. Brilliant. Knives and forks spread for miles around. Burgers were very well done today. NUIM canteen RIP 28-11-2008. Suppose it'll be a year before we have a new one!

The Town Of Maynooth County Kildare (Slide Show)
The ancient name of Maynooth 'Magh Nuadhat' means the plain of Nuadhat. Nuadhat is referred to as the maternal grandfather of the legendary Fionn MaCumhail in the 'Annals of the Four Masters'. In 1426 the sixth Earl of Kildare enlarged and rebuilt the castle. In the latter half of the fifteenth century, Maynooth Castle became the centre of the Geraldine powerbase, as the Earls of Kildare increased their strength of 'rule'. This was something which the English monarchy disliked. The culmination of the developing friction between the Fitzgeralds and the monarchy was the rebellion of Silken Thomas (so called because of his fine clothes). Silken Thomas alias Lord Offaly was a son of Garret Óg, the ninth Earl of Kildare. Thomas rose up in rebellion against the king who had arrested his father, and held him in the Tower of London. Thomas marched to Dublin Castle and threw down the sword of state, declaring himself an enemy of the king. However, his rebellion was curbed when he and his followers were defeated and the stronghold of Maynooth taken by the English. All those within the castle were put to death and this became known, ironically, as the 'Maynooth Pardon'. Thomas, along with five of his uncles, was later executed in London. It became the property of the Duke of Leinster and today only the ruined keep ...

Patricia Maguire, Mature Student, NUI Maynooth
Patricia Maguire, Third Year Arts student talks about her experience as a Mature Student at NUI Maynooth. Transcript: Patricia Maguire, Mature Student So what made me go to College in the first place? Where I worked business was getting slacker and there were redundancies being offered, voluntary redundancies being offered to people. I was sitting there at the desk one time and I was kind of daydreaming as to what it would feel like, knowing that youre going to finish your work in months time, not by your choice. First of all I thought it was horrific; I thought it was going to be absolutely awful. I really felt sorry for the people that were getting the redundancies. Then the more I thought about it, the more I thought it was a great idea, a great opportunity. You had a time limit of a month to go and get yourself another job and plus you would be getting some extra money. Then my view of it changed to this is a great idea. Then when I was at home I was looking through the newspapers, looking for jobs all with high pay; I thought why not, I have taken the step to pack up my bag and leave work and I decided, why not look at all the jobs with high pay? The only problem was that they all needed qualifications, which I hadnt got. Then somebody suggested to me about going for a degree and I just laughed at them and thought dont be ridiculous, it was a mad idea. Then as time has gone on, I kind of briefly checked up about going for a degree and then at the last minute I ...
