The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
The movement consists of several distinct organizations that are legally independent from each other, but are united within the movement through common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes and governing organisations. The movement's parts are:
The Irish Red Cross Society was formally established by Nurse Elizabeth O'Herrin of Dublin City Hospital on 1 July 1939 under the terms of the Red Cross Act 1938. Its constitution is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949, their additional Protocols of 1977 and 2005 (the Geneva Conventions), to which Ireland is a party, Acts of the Oireachtas and relevant provisions of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The society has been supported by the Irish Department of Defence and it receives €739,000 p.a. from them. In addition to that, the Department of Defence gives €130,000 annually to the International Committee of the Red Cross. In the past few years the organisation has gone through significant management and operational changes. In 2011 a new Secretary General was appointed together with a new senior management team.
Formerly the Irish White Cross had worked in the Irish Free State in 1921–28.
The society is organised on a voluntary basis. In Ireland, its activities include mountain rescue, first aid education of the public, the provision of first aid and ambulance services at public events, as well as other community services including therapeutic hand care for the elderly and training of carers. Outside Ireland, the society provides relief and humanitarian services in response to natural disasters and in regions of conflict.
The Red Cross Youth is a youth organisation for adolescents and young members interested in the organization.
In Singapore, Red Cross Youth (RCY) is a Uniformed Group for Primary School and Secondary School students. It has a membership of about 1500 Links (Primary School Students) and about 2500 Cadets (Secondary School Students) as of January 2015. There is also a non-uniformed wing - the RCY Chapters. There are currently 41 Link Units, 43 Cadet Units and 10 Chapter Units. RCY is one of the active divisions in the Singapore Red Cross. It also finances its own operations and activities.
The Red Cross Youth was formed in 1952, with Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) having its first cadet unit. The Red Cross runs school-based youth programmes and is a Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) recognized by the Ministry of Education as an avenue for Character and Citizenship Education in Singapore schools. The Red Cross Youth has two programmes – one for the Primary School children (Link Programme) and another for Secondary School youths (Cadet Programme). The organization of youth activities under this approach has produced good results with both the Link units and Cadet Units, enthusiastically pursuing a series of activities ranging from social/recreational to community programmes.
A cross is a geometrical figure consisting of two lines or bars perpendicular to each other, dividing one or two of the lines in half. The lines usually run vertically and horizontally; if they run obliquely, the design is technically termed a saltire, although the arms of a saltire need not meet at right angles.
The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and has been used by many religions, most notably Christianity. It may be seen as a division of the world into four elements (Chevalier, 1997) or cardinal points, or alternately as the union of the concepts of divinity, the vertical line, and the world, the horizontal line (Koch, 1955).
The word cross comes ultimately from Latin crux, a Roman torture device used for crucifixion, via Old Irish cros. The word was introduced to English in the 10th century as the term for the instrument of the torturous execution of Jesus as described in the New Testament, gradually replacing the earlier word rood. Crux is possibly derived from Phoenician. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia cross does not come from crux but form the Latin curio, "to torment".

Mayors, university professors and schoolteachers, agricultural cooperatives, social activists, members of municipality unions, Lebanese Red Cross volunteers and citizens who benefitted from the Red Cross’ assistance, all put their differences aside and came together to discuss social, economic and humanitarian concerns on the Lebanese scene, guided by the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
With the Syrian crisis showing no signs of abating, people continue to cross into Jordan through the north-eastern border seeking safety and protection. The vast majority are women, children and elderly people who are stranded at the border area between Jordan and Syria known as the “berm,” which is an earthen wall in a rocky area devoid of shade, water or vegetation. Since March 2015, the ICRC has been providing people at the berm near the two crossing points of Hadalat and Rukban with food, water, other essentials and health care, with the participation of the Jordan Red Crescent Society (JRCS).

An hour ago at the checkpoint "Donetsk-Izvarino" began customs procedures and documentation for the cargo of humanitarian aid. The first 16 Trucks went to the border crossing area. Then, fairly quickly checked using a mobile complex. Ukrainian border guards and customs were involved in all procedures, but they do so on the Russian territory, as "Izvarino" - Gearbox with adjacent side - have been destroy...
We first met Leen at a Red Cross shelter in a refugee camp on the border of FYR Macedonia and Greece last November. She had fled Syria with her younger sister and mother, and was travelling to Germany to be reunited with her father. She was exhausted and shaken from her journey but relieved to have reached temporary safety at the Gevgelija refugee transit camp. Months later we heard from her, she had finally arrived in Germany. redcross.org.uk/refugeecrisis

Nīas is an island off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. On December 26, 2004 the Indian Ocean earthquake struck a few kilometers north of the island, creating tsunamis as high as 10 meters. 122 people were killed and hundreds more rendered homeless. On March 28, 2005, the island was again hit by the 2005 Sumatran earthquake, initially presumed to be an aftershock following the 2004 quake, but now regarded as the second-most powerful earthquake in the world since 1965 and twelfth-most powerful ever recorded. At least 800 people were reported dead, with the possibility of more than 2,000 casualties. Hundreds of buildings were toppled and many thousands were made homeless. In 2007, almost two years after the earthquake, there are still tens of thousands of internally disp...

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is helping thousands to rebuild their homes from the ashes and to help them protect their dignity.

As Migrants Die at Sea, Italian Red Cross' Rocca Tells ICP the EU Must Do More, Press Questions About Surveillance By Matthew Russell Lee UNITED NATIONS, May 6 -- When Francesco Rocca of the Italian Red Cross came to the UN to speak about migrants in the Mediterranean Sea on May 6, Inner City Press asked him how those migrants who are saved are processed, and what he thinks the European Union should be doing. Rocca replied that after the EU stopped its Mare Nostrum search and rescue program, deaths have doubled. The numbers, he said, speak for themselves. He said many, after being interviewed, travel further into Europe, illegal, an underclass. One issue Inner City Press was not able to ask about was the role of the UN and its closely related but even less scrutinized fellow agencie...

Help me, please help me, I'm a victim of disaster
My life has just been ripped apart in seconds only faster
I lost all hope I lost myself I lost my family too
So if there's a search and rescue will they find me soon
Burnin I'm burnin I just can't get out
Will someone please tell me what this is all about
I gave my time I gave my money, gave almost everything
So why do bad things happen to good people like me
Red cross will you save me (4x)
Dreamin I'm dreamin will someone wake me up
This nightmare can't be real and I ain't givin up
I need some help, I need some faith
I need the cold hard truth
So if I'm here tomorrow will I be covered too
Learnin' I'm learnin' just who is there for me
He came and died and bled forever I am free
He covered me, he saved me and washed away my sins
