Dealing with Drought in Ireland
We had 7 weeks of unseasonably dry and hot weather here in Ireland, which has had a significant impact on the growing season - both good and bad - and required a lot of watering in the gardens. Unfortunately that is something we are not set up in this typically cool and wet maritime climate.

Ireland’s Surge More Than a Case of Inversion Mania
The Emerald Isle was on fire in 2015, growing GDP by 7.8% and winning 213 foreign direct investment projects. Martin Shanahan, head of Ireland’s economic development agency, said attracting international business has been a cornerstone in Ireland’s recovery strategy following the 2008 global financial crisis. 'It’s a combination of those who have already invested, reinvesting into Ireland and 93 of those were companies who were investing into Ireland for the first time,' said Shanahan. 'Foreign direct investment is a big part of the Irish growth story.' Of course, some of those foreign deals were tax inversion plays by U.S. companies seeking to lower their tax burden. And the flow of those deals has not let up in 2016, despite the strategy being widely denounced on the campaign trail. For ...

Farmers fear drought conditions from heatwave could wipe out their crops
"There'll be no harvesting in this field at all," if the rain doesn't come soonsays north Dublin farmer Colm Leonard.
The current heatwave has caused his broccoli crop to stop growing at a time when he and his workers should be harvesting. Instead they are waiting for rain, using some irrigation methods and hoping it will save the whole field from being wiped out.

12. Britain and Ireland
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210)
In this lecture, Professor Freedman considers the importance of the British Isles in the early Middle Ages, both in their own right and as an example of a post-Roman frontier society. In the wake of the fifth century Roman withdrawal, England experienced "radical economic simplification." However, England's conversion to Christianity beginning at the end of the sixth century brought about a flourishing written culture and Latin learning. Ireland experienced a similar cultural flowering, although it had converted to Christianity centuries earlier. It had never been colonized by the Romans, and the Irish Church was less hierarchical, more decentralized, and placed less importance on bishops than did the Roman. The conversion of England under the c...

For example, auto-parts maker Johnson Controls (JCI) and Tyco (TYC) announced a merger in January that will relocate the combined company’s headquarters to Tyco’s current home in Cork, Ireland. 'I’m not concerned about any backlash, companies make commercial decisions for a good reason,' said Shanahan. 'Companies internationalize for good reasons. They are seeking market. They want to be in Europe.'

However, England's conversion to Christianity beginning at the end of the sixth century brought about a flourishing written culture and Latin learning.
The conversion of England under the competeing influences of Rome and ireland was thus not just a conflict between Christianity and paganism, but also between two administrative styles of Christianity. Professor Freedman ends the lecture with a few remarks on the cultural accomplishments of the British Isles.
