Once a year the Dervishes of Prizren, in southern Kosovo, celebrate "Nevruz," (new day). Nevruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in persian calendar. During this dancing ritual, preachers pray for peace and tolerance while remaining with their pierced faces, as part of the ritual ceremony. The ritual occurs on March 22nd. Ancient piercing techniques are applied, by stabbing their bodies with huge needles, as a way of finding salvation and the way of god. The knives symbolize the healing of all wounds. "This is the blessing of God and the power of the order", says an elderly high-ranking Dervish after the ceremony. Dervishes are shunned by many fellow Muslims as starry-eyed mystics, but the Dervishes who gathered recently in Prizren for a centuries-old celebration do not see themselves as outside the Islamic pale. "We are Muslims and, like them, we are in the same sea. They swim. We prefer to go underwater" says Shejh Adrihusejn, the leader of Prizren's Rifai order.

Excerpts from a Sama, or Whirling Dervish Ceremony performed at the Mevlevihanesi, or Mevlevi Sufi Lodge at Galata in Istanbul on 18 December 2012.
The Sama and the Mevlevi Sufi Order both originate with Sufi Master Jalaluddin Rumi (known in the West simply as Rumi, and by Muslims as Mevlana which means Master). He was born in northern Afghanistan in 1207, but lived for most of his life in Konya, in central Anatolia in what is now Turkey. He died there in 1273, and his tomb in Konya is now a centre of Muslim pilgrimage.
Rumi was already an eminent Islamic scholar and preacher when, at the age of 32, he encountered a wandering Sufi dervish, Shams of Tabriz, who inspired his mystical awakening. Following this he became a prolific mystical writer and poet with the best known collection of his sacred poems called the Masnavi.
He also founded the Mevlevi Sufi Order that spread throughout the Ottoman Empire under the aegis of several Ottoman Sultans. Its central ritual is the elaborate Sama, best known for its whirling.
As the wonderful book 'Rumi and His Sufi Path of Love' edited by Turkish scholars M. Fatih Citlak and Huseyin Bingul explains, the word 'sama' is an Arabic word "denoting a variety of meanings, such as listening, paying attention, lending an ear, the statement heard, good reputation, and remembrance....it has been the name given to listening to the musical melodies, falling deep into ecstasy, moving arbitrarily to the sound, and to the standing dhikr (remembrance of God) performed by sufis amid a cyclone of rapture".
All elements of the Sama, the music, the dress of the participants, their gestures and movements are rich in symbolism. For instance their conical hat, called a sikka, symbolizes the tombstone of the self. All the symbols deal with big universal spiritual ideas and concepts.
As the aforementioned book explains, the dervishes "rotate around the area, akin to how the planets rotate around themselves and around the Sun. The idea of the sama is itself an expression of the composition of the universe, and within it man's resurrection, his movement triggered by the love of God, and his inclination towards the Universal Man, or Insan-i Kamil, by virtue of realizing his servanthood".

A Dervish or Darvesh (from Persian درویش, Darvīsh via Turkish,Somali: Daraawiish, Arabic: درويش ) is someone treading a Sufi Muslim ascetic path or "Tariqah", known for their extreme poverty and austerity. In this respect, Dervishes are most similar to mendicant friars in Christianity or Hindu/Buddhist/Jain sadhus.
The Persian word darvīsh (درویش) is of ancient origin and descends from a Proto-Iranian word that appears in Avestan as drigu-, "needy, mendicant". The Iranian word is probably further cognate with the Vedic Sanskrit word adhrigu-, an epithet of uncertain meaning applied to several deities. The Vedic word is probably to be analysed as a-dhrigu-, that is "not dhrigu-," perhaps "not poor", i.e. "rich." The existence of this Vedic cognate suggests that the institution of the holy mendicant was as prominent among the ancient Indo-Iranian people as it has been historically in later Iran in the form of dervish brotherhoods and also in India in the form of the various schools of sannyasis. However, because the etymology of the word is not apparent from the point of view of the modern Persian language, there have been attempts to make the parts of the word interpretable in terms of contemporary words and with reference to Sufic mystical concepts. Dar in Persian means "a door"; "dervish" has been interpreted as "one who goes from door to door". . The Persian word also gives terms for "ascetic" in some languages, as in the Urdu phrase darveshaneh tabi'at, "an unflappable or ascetic temperament".

Nevruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in persian calendar. During this dancing ritual, preachers pray for peace and tolerance while remaining with their pierced faces, as part of the ritual ceremony. The ritual occurs on March 22nd. Ancient piercing techniques are applied, by stabbing their bodies with huge needles, as a way of finding salvation and the way of god. The knives symbolize the healing of all wounds. Excerpts from a Sama, or Whirling Dervish Ceremony performed at the Mevlevihanesi, or Mevlevi Sufi Lodge at Galata in Istanbul on 18 December 2012. The Sama and the Mevlevi Sufi Order both originate with Sufi Master Jalaluddin Rumi (known in the West simply as Rumi, and by Muslims as Mevlana which means Master). He was born in northern Afghanistan in 1207, but lived for most of his life in Konya, in central Anatolia in what is now Turkey. He died there in 1273, and his tomb in Konya is now a centre of Muslim pilgrimage. Rumi was already an eminent Islamic scholar and preacher when, at the age of 32, he encountered a wandering Sufi dervish, Shams of Tabriz, who inspired his mystical awakening. Once a year the Dervishes of Prizren, in southern Kosovo, celebrate "Nevruz," (new day). Nevruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in persian calendar. During this dancing ritual, preachers pray for peace and tolerance while remaining with their pierced faces, as part of the ritual ceremony. The ritual occurs on March 22nd. Ancient piercing techniques are applied, by stabbing their bodies with huge needles, as a way of finding salvation and the way of god. The knives symbolize the healing of all wounds. "This is the blessing of God and the power of the order", says an elderly high-ranking Dervish after the ceremony. Dervishes are shunned by many fellow Muslims as starry-eyed mystics, but the Dervishes who gathered recently in Prizren for a centuries-old celebration do not see themselves as outside the Islamic pale. "We are Muslims and, like them, we are in the same sea. They swim. We prefer to go underwater" says Shejh Adrihusejn, the leader of Prizren's Rifai order.

Excerpts from a Sama, or Whirling Dervish Ceremony performed at the Mevlevihanesi, or Mevlevi Sufi Lodge at Galata in Istanbul on 18 December 2012.
The Sama and the Mevlevi Sufi Order both originate with Sufi Master Jalaluddin Rumi (known in the West simply as Rumi, and by Muslims as Mevlana which means Master). He was born in northern Afghanistan in 1207, but lived for most of his life in Konya, in central Anatolia in what is now Turkey. He died there in 1273, and his tomb in Konya is now a centre of Muslim pilgrimage.
Rumi was already an eminent Islamic scholar and preacher when, at the age of 32, he encountered a wandering Sufi dervish, Shams of Tabriz, who inspired his mystical awakening. Following this he became a prolific mystical writer and poet with the best known collection of his sacred poems called the Masnavi.
He also founded the Mevlevi Sufi Order that spread throughout the Ottoman Empire under the aegis of several Ottoman Sultans. Its central ritual is the elaborate Sama, best known for its whirling.
As the wonderful book 'Rumi and His Sufi Path of Love' edited by Turkish scholars M. Fatih Citlak and Huseyin Bingul explains, the word 'sama' is an Arabic word "denoting a variety of meanings, such as listening, paying attention, lending an ear, the statement heard, good reputation, and remembrance....it has been the name given to listening to the musical melodies, falling deep into ecstasy, moving arbitrarily to the sound, and to the standing dhikr (remembrance of God) performed by sufis amid a cyclone of rapture".
All elements of the Sama, the music, the dress of the participants, their gestures and movements are rich in symbolism. For instance their conical hat, called a sikka, symbolizes the tombstone of the self. All the symbols deal with big universal spiritual ideas and concepts.
As the aforementioned book explains, the dervishes "rotate around the area, akin to how the planets rotate around themselves and around the Sun. The idea of the sama is itself an expression of the composition of the universe, and within it man's resurrection, his movement triggered by the love of God, and his inclination towards the Universal Man, or Insan-i Kamil, by virtue of realizing his servanthood".
