John T. "Jack" Mullin (1913–1999) was an American pioneer in the field of magnetic tape sound recording and made significant contributions to many other related fields. From his days at Santa Clara University to his death, he displayed a deep appreciation for classical music and an aptitude for electronics and engineering. When he died in 1999, he was buried with a rosary and a reel of magnetic tape. A 2006 documentary movie, Sound Man: WWII to MP3, was made about his life and contributions to sound recording.
By 1943, German engineers had developed a high-quality form of magnetic tape sound recording that was unknown elsewhere. The Nazi radio networks used it to broadcast music and propaganda around the clock.
From their monitoring of Nazi radio broadcasts during World War II, the Allies knew that German radio studios had some new kind of recorder that could reproduce high-fidelity sound in segments of unheard-of length, up to 15 minutes duration. But for several years, they didn't know what these machines were or how they worked, and it was not until Germany fell to the Allies during 1944-45 that the Americans discovered the new magnetic tape recorders. Mullin saw the potential of the new technology and developed it immediately after the war.

Jack Mullin recounts how his life changed after discovering the performance of the AEG Magnetophon, the first tape recorders used in Germany to record live performances and for broadcasting. The first models retailed during the fall of 1935 and rapidly evolved. True Hi-fi recordings were possible as early as 1941, and stereo machines even existed in 1943. At that time, one listening to his radio would never distinguish a live performance from a recorded one. Remarkable recordings were made, lots of which are still available nowadays. Jack Mullin understood the potential of the AEG Magnetophon and brought two machines with him, which are seen on the picture. The amplifiers on the rear are not original. Mulli only took what was necessary: the tape transports and fifty reels of tape. He was ...

Just after World War II, Jack Mullin of the US Signal Corp appropriated two AEG Magnetophone tape recorders from a German radio station in Bad Nauheim (near Frankfurt), disassembled them, and sent them to San Francisco, along with manuals. These recorders ran at 100 cm per second, a nice round number in the metric system. Mullin later modified the Magnetophone to run with motors that worked with 60 Hz US power and slowed the tape speed from 39.4 to 30 inches per second, a nice round number in the English system. Since then, 30 ips has been a multiple of all standard audio tape speeds worldwide. For example, professional multitrack tape recorders use tape speeds of both 15 and 30 ips. Reel-to-reel for radio and some reel--to-reel commercial recordings were at 7 ½ ips. Lear 8-track cart...

Antikrieg TV - Jack Moylett & Alison Mullin are performing “The Immortalist” by Heathcote Williams, inspired by literary wizard Heathcote Williams, best-selling poet, critically acclaimed playwright, award winning author, accomplished actor and celebrated activist who pioneered the investigational prose poem and uses this medium to tackle a variety of political and environmental issues. The Immortalist is a play on the nature of time, ageing and death: a sceptical TV reporter interviews a 278 year old man about time itself and the alternative to death. The Immortalist argues against passivity: “people foul up because they stay in the same place. They’ve traded utopia for reality, they’ve traded their instinct for politics. Consuming is a substitute for being. TV is a substitute for astral ...

Herb Mullin was born on April 18, 1947. Mullin seemed totally normal throughout his childhood. The son of a World War 2 veteran, Mullin was an extremely bright and sensitive boy who was involved in sports and voted "most likely to succeed" in High School. By the age of thirty-six, he was a raging schizophrenic and a prolific Serial Killer. The summer after his High School graduation, Mullin's close friend Dean Richardson was killed in an auto accident. This seemed to trigger the start of his odd behavior and he soon had built a shrine to his dead friend in his bedroom and began to obsess about reincarnation, religion, and impending natural disasters. Drugs became a big part of Mullin's life and his deteriorating mental state was coaxed along by huge doses of acid. His behavior frightened ...
Orlando Joseph Jett (born 1958) is an American former securities trader, known for his role in the Kidder Peabody trading loss in 1994. At the time of the loss it was the largest trading fraud in history. Jett's primary strategy was to exploit a flaw in Kidder's computer systems that made unprofitable trades appear profitable. "There were virtually no genuine profitable trades. Joseph Jett, Kidder, Peabody's former bond-trading star, simply made up trades and marked them down as having made money. In the meantime, his few real trades consistently lost money." - Floyd Norris in the New York Times[6] The trades used in constructing the phony profits were forward reconstitutions of US Treasury bonds. The transaction is executed when a trader buys a set of treasury strips sufficient to re-...
