Various of people sleeping on a side road due to load shedding STORYLINE Residents in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, have been blocking streets and burning tyres to protest against recurring power outages, which have thrown the city in chaos, sometimes for hours on end. The country's power companies are struggling to meet the unprecedented power demand which is the result of economic growth and increased consumption in all sectors of the economy. In Karachi, the problem has been made worse by frequently occurring faults and tripping in various generation units of the privatised KESC company's power stations, according to local media. The electricity shortfall during peak power consumption hours has forced KESC (Karachi Electric Supply Corporation) to resort to load-shedding various residential and business parts of the city for several hours, sometimes several times per day.
