CREATING A CULTURE OF HEALTH
Food and drug retailer, Safeway, Inc. rolled out CDHPs to a portion of its employees in 2006 primarily as a business rationale for addressing rising healthcare costs, especially among chronic disease sufferers who were found to be both the largest users of care and yet the less treatment adherent. Explained Dolores Kelleher , D.M.H., Director, Health & Wellness Initiatives, "we want our employees to understand what health care costs, what quality means and to make value-based decisions." The company has since emphasized the strategic value of a healthy workforce to create a business advantage for the company in the highly competitive, low-margin retailer business.
Safeway has also deployed incentives as a way to drive healthy behavior. While conceding that incentives "may not change behavior over time by themselves," Kelleher stated, "they are a good way to get people's attention." Safeway has had the most success with standards-driven programs. According to Kelleher, "we keep trying different kinds of incentives, and what works for us [Safeway] is when they are tied contextually to what we're getting at," whether that be blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol measures, smoking cessation or BMI improvement. The company's Health Measures health assessment program offers benefits premium discounts to employees when they meet certain levels, both on a pro-rated basis and retroactively to reflect improvement over time. This approach appears to be working as the company has seen participation jump in its voluntary program and improvement in measures for employees over time.
In addition to cost-reduction initiatives, Safeway also offers team and virtual health challenges to provide fun and social ways for employees and their families to raise health awareness. While challenges are prone to "faster fatigue", Kelleher has found that "if we get people to engage over time [in challenges], then they will incorporate this in a more routine way - as sustained behavior - and we get a better [health] trend line." In worksite cafeterias, the cost of healthy food dishes is subsidized to encourage workers to opt for healthier choices. On site gyms provide wellness and weight management programs and subsidies for 3rd party gyms are offered where there are no work facilities. For those employees with chronic disease or at risk behavior, the company offers the services of a dedicated health team to provide information and education to telephonic outreach and coaching.
"It's great to have a lot of different programs," states Kelleher, "but it is not enough." In order to drive sustained change, the programs need to be knitted together within a culture of health that flows from top leadership down into the organization and extending to each employee and out to their families. "You really have to create an environment that makes it easy for people to do the right thing," advises Kelleher, "and harder to the wrong thing."
[Editor's note: Dolores Kelleher is no longer an employee of Safeway. She now runs D Kelleher Consulting.]
Kelleher's talk was given at Consumer-Centric Health: MODELS FOR CHANGE '11, a conference that featured more than 20 presentations on all facets of health behavior change. The presenters represented diverse fields of medicine, employer health, mobile technology, health insurance, gaming, public health, research, and anthropology. The 1½ day conference, held at Seattle University in Seattle, Washington, began with an opening keynote on Oct 12, with the main sessions on Oct 13, divided into three sections (1) WHAT'S WORKING IN BEHAVIOR CHANGE; (2) HOW TO SCALE BEHAVIOR CHANGE; and (3) WHAT ELSE IS NEEDED TO MAKE BEHAVIOR CHANGE MORE EFFECTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE.
Models for Change '11 was convened by Health Innoventions with support from Bastyr University's Center for Health Policy & Leadership and Seattle University's Organization Systems Renewal Program.

Safeway The Road to World Class Manufacturing - circa 1995
This was a sizable show for the Safeway (food store) Supply Division. They wanted to document ways they bring food to market. Audience was their own employees and various conferences and industry meetings they were involved in. Rick wrote and directed and co-edited. This copy is from a VHS copy, so quality suffers in this version.

I mentioned to restart two or three times, and he says no. I had to edit this video down and my part

The Undeclared War Against American Women's Rights: The Backlash Against Feminism (1992)
Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women is a 1991 nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize winner Susan Faludi, which argues for the existence of a media driven "backlash" against the feminist advances of the 1970s. Faludi argues that this backlash posits the women's liberation movement as the source of many of the problems alleged to be plaguing women in the late 1980s.
She also argues that

Creating a culture of health. Wellness enhances productivity. Engaged employees improve well-being. These are concepts we can agree with, but we puzzle over how they are put into practice at other companies, and not our own. There are many ideas on how to improve employee health and ultimately reduce costs, but for real change to occur, a sound idea must be well-executed. A promising idea may fall flat in the implementation, while a bad idea may gain traction as a result of strong execution -- neither will lead to meaningful, measurable change. The Senate Republican Conference and the Republican Policy Committee held a hearing on Thursday, May 21, to discuss wellness and prevention through healthy behavior as a key to health care reform. Helping people lead healthier lives is central to controlling the cost of health care for everyone—not just the unhealthy. Largely manageable or preventable chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States and account for the vast majority of health care spending. This hearing explored solutions that can help keep Americans healthier and truly bend the cost curve in the right direction.
Witnesses included Governor Mike Huckabee, Dr. Andrew Baldwin, and Steve Burd, CEO of Safeway, Inc.

http://oaklandfocus.blogspot.com - This is a video of the recent June 19, 2008 meeting to present Safeway's controversial plan to dramatically move and expand the current Safeway store at College Avenue and Claremont.
The new store will be at 6310 College Avenue and roughly at what is now a corner gas station. The new 75,000 square foot store -- three times the size of the current facility -- will undoubtefly bring more traffic and also foot traffic closer to the center of Rockridge in North Oakland. That's the concern of the over 300 people who packed the room on that hot Thursday June 19th evening.
The video features incumbent Councilmember Jane Brunner's presentation of the meeting, a talk with Patrick McCullough, who was Brunner's challenger in the last election primary (2008), a presentation by Dan Metzger of the Claremont / Elwood Neighbor Association, Stu Flashman of The Rockridge Community Planning Council, and Elizabeth Jewel, the planning consultant, as well as Todd Paradis, of the Safeway Real Estate department, and a lively talk by Nancy McKay and Susan Shawl of the "Concerned Neighbors" group.
There were 60 public speakers, and most of them were against the project, while the Berkeley Daily Planet counted 5 supporters. I didn't get that part of the meeeting into the video as it's already 32 minutes long.
Yes, you're going to need some coffee to see it. Most of the video contains an informative presentation by Paradis, and includes slides on what the building is planned to look like. In the video, you can hear some hisses.
The climate of the meeting could be described as edgy.
I think given the economy and other matters, Safeway's timing is terrible. People are already stressed out and working just to make ends meet. Gas is as high as it can be, and going up. So any undesired change in the neighborhood is going to rile up anyone beyond normal levels. That's what's happening with Safeway.
Also, this is not the only project Safeway is planning. They want to expand in Berkeley, on Solono Avenue, too. There are Oakland and Berkeley residents who are talking about forming a "joint opposition" to Safeway's plans in general.
I'll keep an eye on this issue for you. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the video.

An interview with Peter Magowan, president and managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants.
Peter's grandfather, Charles Merrill, founded Merrill Lynch & Co.; Peter's father, Robert Anderson Magowan, was the former CEO of Safeway Stores, one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America as based on sales and his mother was Doris Merrill Magowan, whose brother, Charles Edward Merrill, was President of Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, and her other brother, James I. Merrill was a Pulitzer prize-winning poet. The marriage of Peter's parents begot five sons, Peter, Robin, Merrill, Stephen and Mark. His mother's interests, largely inherited by Peter, included business, philanthropy, the fine arts and associations with stand-out individuals, e.g., Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. He and his spouse, Debbie, are the parents of four daughters and one son: Kim, Hillary, Margo, Kristen and Matthew.
Peter earned a B.S. in American Literature from Stanford University, an M.A. in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He served with the U.S. State Department for two years. Peter began his 37-year career with Safeway as a checker, store manager and real estate negotiator. In 1986, Safeway was the subject of an unsolicited takeover and then a defensive leveraged buy-out orchestrated by Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and thereafter, another public offering. In 1993, after 13 years as Safeway's CEO, Peter resigned to become a member of the investment group which purchased the San Francisco Giants from Bob Lurie. After the purchase, Peter became the president and managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants. Willie Mays was Peter's assistant; Willie McCovey, his senior advisor; Orlando Cepeda, his community representative; and Felipe Alou, his special assistant. Peter retired and resigned as the president and managing general partner effective in 2009.
Peter has served as a director of Caterpillar, Daimler Chrysler, Spring Group PLC, W5 Networks, Inc., Baxter, Cox Communications and Safeway. Among Peter's many honors are Businessman of the Year awarded by the San Francisco Business Times and the Commonwealth Club Distinguished Citizens Award. Peter's non-business interests include skiing, gardening, tennis, fishing, reading and poetry; his favorite book of poetry is The Pitch is on the Way: Poems About Baseball and Life as to which he comments that "Anyone who knows and loves baseball will enjoy this remarkable collection of poems."

I did another video calling the fake tech support. In this video I had a fake virus I found somewhere and had it on the desktop and saved everywhere else. I like how he draws his eye to the "Financial Info" when looking around the desktop. Obviously he wants it to be open, and the fake virus opens. I mentioned to restart two or three times, and he says no. I had to edit this video down and my part 2 video. SOOO much dead air, plus the parts where he has NO IDEA how to get rid of this FAKE virus. The original length of this video was nearly 2 hours. Enjoy.

She also argues that many of these problems are illusory, constructed by the media without reliable evidence. According to Faludi, the backlash is also a historical trend, generally recurring when it appears that women have made substantial gains in their efforts to obtain equal rights. The book won the National Book Critics Circle Award for non-fiction in 1991.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlash:_The_Undeclared_War_Against_American_Women
Susan C. Faludi (born April 18, 1959) is an American feminist, journalist and author. She won a Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism in 1991, for a report on the leveraged buyout of Safeway Stores, Inc., a report that the Pulitzer Prize committee commended for depicting the "human costs of high finance".
Faludi was born to a Jewish family in Queens, New York in 1959 and grew up in Yorktown Heights, New York. Her mother was a homemaker and journalist and is a long-time New York University student. Her father is a photographer who had emigrated from Hungary, a survivor of the Holocaust. Susan graduated from Harvard University in 1981, where she wrote for The Harvard Crimson, and became a journalist, writing for The New York Times, Miami Herald, Atlanta Journal Constitution, San Jose Mercury News, and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications. Throughout the eighties she wrote several articles on feminism and the apparent resistance to the movement. Seeing a pattern emerge, Faludi wrote Backlash, which was released in late 1991. In 2008-2009, Faludi was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She lives with fellow author Russ Rymer. Since January 2013, Faludi has been a contributing editor at The Baffler magazine in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In her 1999 book Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man Faludi analyzes the state of the American man. Faludi argues that while many of those in power are men, most individual men have little power. American men have been brought up to be strong, support their families and work hard. But many men who followed this now find themselves underpaid or unemployed, disillusioned and abandoned by their wives. Changes in American society have affected both men and women, Faludi concludes, and it is wrong to blame individual men for class differences, or for plain differences in individual luck and ability, that they did not cause and from which men and women suffer alike.
In The Terror Dream Faludi analyzes the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in light of prior American experience going back to insecurity on the historical American frontier such as in Metacom's Rebellion. Faludi argues that 9/11 reinvigorated in America a climate that is hostile to women. Women are viewed as weak and best suited to playing support roles for the men who protect them from attack. The book was called a "tendentious, self-important, sloppily reasoned work that gives feminism a bad name" by the New York Times principal book reviewer Michiko Kakutani. Sarah Churchwell in the Guardian says, "Ultimately Faludi is guilty of her own exaggerations and mythmaking, strong-arming her argument into submission." On the other hand, Kirkus Reviews claimed that the book was a "rich, incisive analysis of the surreality of American life in the wake of 9/11" and that it was "brilliant, illuminating and essential."[8] Reviewing the book for Fresh Air, Maureen Corrigan praised Faludi for her "characteristic restraint and depth of research" and for her "rigorous insistence on truth."
Faludi has rejected the claim advanced by critics that there is a "rigid, monolithic feminist orthodoxy", noting in response that she has disagreed with Gloria Steinem about pornography and Naomi Wolf about abortion.
Like Gloria Steinem, Faludi has criticized the obscurantism prevalent in academic feminist theorizing, saying, "There's this sort of narrowing specialization and use of coded, elitist language of deconstruction or New Historicism or whatever they're calling it these days, which is to my mind impenetrable and not particularly useful."[13] She has also characterized "academic feminism's love affair with deconstructionism" as "toothless", and warned that it "distract[s] from constructive engagement with the problems of the public world".
