The plane came down on the east bank of the River Nile
A cargo plane has crashed on take-off near the international airport in South Sudan's capital Juba, with at least 25 killed.
Some reports put the death toll as high as 40.
It is unclear how many of the victims were on the plane and how many were on the ground.
Juba's Radio Miraya says the Antonov plane was heading to Paloch in Upper Nile State and crashed just 800m (half a mile) from the runway.
Presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny told Reuters news agency that there were at least two survivors, a crew member and a child.
A spokesman for Russia's diplomatic mission in Uganda said they were in contact with South Sudanese officials over the plane crash, following reports that the dead included the five-member Russian crew, AFP news agency reported.

South Sudan's government refused to sign a peace deal with rebels Monday despite the threat of international sanctions, but will return to finalise an agreement within 15 days, mediators said. Rebel chief Riek Machar however said he had signed a deal, and called on President Salva Kiir to join. The world's newest nation is in the throes of a dire humanitarian crisis, with more than 2.5 million peo

Girls in South Sudan struggle to get to school
Only 10 percent of all children in South Sudan will complete primary school, according to UNICEF.
For girls, the path to an education is even tougher, as the civil war limits access to schools and teachers.

Read the entire issue devoted to South Sudan: http://www.vice.com/read/saving-south-sudan
Late last year, South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, accused his former vice president, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup d'état amid accusations of rampant corruption within the government. Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's newest sovereign nation is in imminent danger of becoming a failed state.
In February, journalists and filmmakers Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia set out on a grueling mission to locate Machar in his secret hideout in Akobo and get his side of the story. Accompanying was Machot Lat Thiep, a former child soldier and Lost Boy who had advised on South Sudan's constitution and now works as a manager of a Costco in Seattle. Machot acted as a guide of sorts, arranging Pelton and Freccia's rendezvous with Machar through a series of endless satellite-phone calls to old contacts and rebel platoons, who would eventually guide the group to the deposed vice president.
After spending a couple days with Machar, he granted Pelton and Freccia unprecedented access to the front lines of a battle in Malakal, where for the first time in history the pair documented the heretofore mythical White Army as they looted, murdered, and pillaged their way to some twisted interpretation of "victory."
Saving South Sudan is a multi-platform exploration of the horrors of the country's newest civil war. We devoted an entire issue of the magazine to Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia's sprawling 35,000-plus word epic exploration of the crisis in South Sudan. It's a companion piece of sorts; watch the documentary and read the issue or vice versa. But you won't get a full scope of the situation without doing both.

After twenty months of a deadly civil war, a tentative peace agreement is in place signed between South Sudan and the rebel forces.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit admitted signing the deal despite ‘serious reservations’ with his rival – Riek Machar - the man who will act as his deputy in the new power sharing unity government under the Compromise Peace Agreement.
Kiir is under pressure from the international community with the threat of more crippling sanctions if the South Sudanese president reneges on the deal. Is peace achievable or is it all too soon for a country still struggling with its tumultuous past?

DemocracyNow.org - Peace talks between South Sudan’s warring sides have failed to reach a deal to end a civil war which has claimed tens of thousands of lives in the world’s youngest nation. Last week, the United States proposed implementing a United Nations arms embargo on South Sudan and new sanctions unless the government signs a peace deal to end the conflict. Now the situation in South Sudan is the subject of a new documentary, "We Come as Friends," by Austrian director Hubert Sauper that provides an aerial view of the conflict in Sudan from a shaky, handmade two-seater plane. The film depicts American investors, Chinese oilmen, United Nations officials and Christian missionaries struggling to shape Sudan according to their own visions, while simultaneously applauding the alleged "independence" of the world’s newest state. What emerges is a devastating critique of the consequences of cultural and economic imperialism. We speak with Hauper and feature excerpts from the film, which debuts this week in theaters.

VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

Betty Drasa, who has lived in Nairobi for more than 10 years and supports herself by working as a seamstress, is one of those who are struggling.
The single mother of four makes tablecloths and dresses and sends them to Juba to be sold in Konyo Konyo market.
Clients pay for her goods in South Sudanese pounds, Drasa exchanges them for U.S. dollars.
But since South Sudan erupted in conflict in December 2013, Drasa says her work is not bringing in the same income as before - especially too as the dollar strengthens in world markets.
"These days, I send, they buy, but the exchange rate is very high," she said. "So now, when I exchange it, it doesn't help me here - not like before."
Black market rates
It takes 900 South Sudanese pounds (SSP) to buy $100 on the black market.
The official exchange rate, set by the South Sudanese Central Bank, is 316 SSP TO $100. But to get that rate, Drasa would have to go to the Central Bank in Juba.
Christen Jumi, the chair of the South Sudan Women’s Association In Kenya, says the plummeting exchange rate affects most South Sudanese families living in Kenya.
"Our men, most of them are working in South Sudan," Jumi said. "They used to change the money and send it to us. We've come to notice that our money is not coming the way it used to come, and when we ask our husbands they say, 'OK, the rates have gone up and our salary is not that much.'"
Jumi says some South Sudanese families have been forced to return to Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya, where they at least receive basic social services.
"They could not pay the rent, the children could not go to school, even food is a problem," she said. "In our area four families moved - they sold their things and they went."
Multi-tiered problem
The economic problems facing South Sudan are many.
The conflict in South Sudan has made trading partners wary of bringing in goods to the country, which relies heavily on imports.
The dollar has gained strength in world markets over the past year as the U.S. economy improves and the fallout has hit South Sudan.
Global oil prices have fallen sharply. Oil output in South Sudan has plummeted because of the conflict. Oil is South Sudan's biggest export and brings in almost all of the government's revenues.
South Sudan's conflict forced the shut-down of oil facilities in Unity state, leaving only one state - Upper Nile, where fighting is still ongoing - to produce oil.
Platts commodities information service says South Sudan exported the equivalent of 141,925 barrels of crude per day last month.
In 2012, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, South Sudan produced 250,000 barrels per day.

Hit by falling oil revenues, South Sudan's economy is also troubled by a violent conflict that looks set to continue.
It could get worse in this young country, with the U.N. warning that South Sudan's economy is now threatened by rampant inflation as the central bank is allegedly printing money to meet a budget shortfall.
Toby Lanzer, the U.N.'s top humanitarian official in South Sudan, said at a news conference on Tuesday that since December South Sudan's government has resorted to the "old trick" of printing money.
Lanzer said in the capital Juba, "Printing money when there is nothing to back the value of that currency usually leads to hyperinflation."
South Sudan's economy has suffered since the outbreak in December 2013 of fighting between supporters of President Salva Kiir and renegade troops loyal to his former deputy. Several peace agreements have collapsed. Oil production facilities have been damaged in the fighting and some have fallen under rebel control.

The Kenyan and South Sudanese Governments have signed a memorandum of understanding towards the construction of a fiber optic cable, which will run from Eldoret town to South Sudan's capital, Juba. The project is part of collaborative efforts to improve infrastructure in the region. It stems from discussions held during the Northern Corridor Summit in Nairobi in December last year. Kenya will construct the fiber optic cable from Eldoret to Kenya's border with South Sudan, and the South Sudanese will build the remaining bit extending to Juba. The World Bank is the lead financier of the project.

This is the view of Kenya Commercial Bank, Wau Branch, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Wau Town. This bank looks like a dumping place, very ugly and not worth the value money of the money being deposited in cartoons, sacks and plastic bags. How on earth in 21st century a bank can look like this? Is this not stealing? Why the bank is not maintained to serve the interest of the costumers? Seems like there is not value for customers and money. South Sudan authority should inspect foreign banks properly to meet the local and international standard for operations.

Clooney and John Prendergast co-wrote a Washington Post op-ed piece in May 2011, titled "Dancing with a dictator in Sudan", arguing that:
President Omar al-Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for genocide, is escalating bombing and food aid obstruction in Darfur, and he now threatens the entire north-south peace process ... the evidence shows that incentives alone are insufficient to change Khartoum's calculations. International support should be sought immediately for denying debt relief, expanding the ICC indictments, diplomatically isolating the regime, suspending all non-humanitarian aid, obstructing state-controlled bank transactions and freezing accounts holding oil wealth diverted by senior regime officials.
On March 16, 2012, Clooney was arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy for civil disobedience, during a protest. Clooney had intended to be arrested when he planned the protest. Several other prominent participants in the protest were also arrested, including Martin Luther King III.
Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 until they divorced in 1993. He has said that he will never marry again.[64] After meeting British model Lisa Snowdon on the set of a Martini advertisement in 2000, he had a five-year on-again, off-again relationship with her.[65] In June 2007, he started dating reality personality Sarah Larson, but the couple broke up in May 2008.[66] In July 2009, Clooney was in a relationship with Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis until they split in June 2011.[67][68][69] Since July 2011, Clooney has been dating former WWE Diva Stacy Keibler.[70]
Clooney has also dated actresses Kelly Preston (1987--1989), Renée Zellweger (2001) and Krista Allen (2002--2008) as well as French reality TV personality Céline Balitran (1996--1999).[71][72][73][74][75]
Often featured in People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue, Clooney's marital status and availability are a running joke among female fans who still fantasize they have a chance to bring him to the altar. Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in Las Vegas has a "Marrying George Clooney" photo-op, in which museum visitors can put on a wedding gown and stand next to a wax statue of the actor in a tuxedo.[76]
Despite his highly publicized relationships with women, Clooney's sexual orientation has been the subject of media scrutiny. When asked about the subject in an interview with The Advocate, Clooney stated, "The last thing you'll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, 'These are lies!' That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community. I'm not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing."

Recently, a group of 7 Church of the Brethren members visited South Sudan, the newest country in Africa. A fragile peace in South Sudan has been a great benefit to its peoples. For over 30 years the Church of the Brethren has supported the peace making efforts of Brethren staff person, Athanasus Ungang and the Brethren Peace and Service Center in Torit, South Sudan.
Having begun a relationship with Sudanese Brethren in the 1990's, John Jones of Myrtle Point, Oregon reports a story of hope for his "brothers and sisters" of South Sudan.
Sustainable agriculture is one of the benefits of this time of peace in South Sudan. Back in the 1990's during his first visit, one did not see cattle or goats. They were all killed off by war. Today, they are seen all over the country.
Civil war in Sudan began in the 1950's, During the 1980's the Brethren were asked to initiate a Primary Health Care Program for the Western Nuer of Upper Nile Province of Sudan. The scope of this development work for five Brethren was to provide basic health care for persons and cattle as well as digging water wells and promoting food production.
The 1990's saw a second phase of Brethren work on Nuer Bible translation and assisting the New Sudan Council of Churches to unification during the on-going civil war. The major emphasis was the People to People peace movement which helped calm 50 years of civil war leading to the creation of the Republic of South Sudan.
