Scientists believe that the H7N9 avian influenza virus is evolving to adapt better to human cells. A study of samples taken from recent cases of the bird flu in China shows that the virus is mutating to thrive in the cooler temperatures found in the human upper respiratory system. This suggests that the virus will be better able to infect humans.
Flu viruses carry hemagglutinin and neuraminidase activity proteins on their surfaces. Inside, they contain eight RNA segments of genetic material needed to produce new viruses. When different strains of the virus enter a host cell, the elements can recombine to create new mutant viruses.
In the case of H7N9, scientists say they have traced the virus back to three different strains of bird flu. Hemagglutinin proteins found on the virus have mutated to be more adaptable to the conditions of the human body, leading scientists to believe that it could evolve into a strain that might be transmissible between humans, and thus potentially pose the risk of a pandemic. At present, bird flu is only transmitted from bird-to-bird and bird-to-human.

Four people in China's Jiangsu Province have become the latest people to fall ill with H7N9, a strain of bird flu new to humans, according to reports.
The three women and one man are in critical condition and are being treated in the provincial capital of Nanjing, health authorities said.
The cases are the second batch to be confirmed after Reuters reported that, "two men in Shanghai, aged 87 and 27, fell sick in late February. A woman in Anhui province also contracted the virus in early March and is in critical condition.
"At this point, these three are isolated cases with no evidence of human-to-human transmission", the WHO representative in China, Dr. Michael O'Leary, told reporters on Monday.
China's National Health and Family Planning Commission confirmed on Sunday that the three cases were the H7N9 virus, which had not previously been known to infect humans.
"A new virus tends to be more virulent in the beginning. Either it is going to become a truly human virus, in which case we have to start dealing with it regularly, or it is going to be primarily an animal virus with just a rare human case," O'Leary said.
Some Chinese had complained that authorities took too long before announcing the deaths on Sunday. O'Leary said the government acted properly as the deaths needed to be investigated."

Imported H7N9 case recorded (23.1.2015)
The Centre for Health Protection is investigating the second imported human case of avian influenza A (H7N9) in Hong Kong this winter. The case involves a 79-year-old man who travelled to Dongguang. Speaking at a press conference today, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said the man fell ill on January 19 and was admitted to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on January 22. He is now in stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital. He travelled to Zhangmutou district in Dongguang alone on January 5, where he visited a wet market selling live poultry, but had no direct contact with the birds. 六旬漢蘇州返港染H7N9 (23.2.2016)
衞生防護中心公布，本港確診入冬以來首宗外地傳入人類感染甲型禽流感（H7N9）個案，60歲男病人留院接受治療。 中心總監梁挺雄今日在簡報會上表示，男病人在江蘇蘇州居住和工作，曾到訪住所附近一濕貨市場，報稱沒有接觸過家禽。 他過往健康良好，2月5日來港，三日後發燒、發冷、顫抖、咳嗽和呼吸困難，2月10和11日向私家醫生求診，並於2月11日獲轉介到東區尤德夫人那打素醫院接受治療，其樣本初步化驗對甲型流感呈陰性反應。他於2月15日出院，臨床診斷為肺炎，情況一直穩定。 他在2月18和22日向另一私家醫生求醫，衞生防護中心公共衞生化驗服務處進一步化驗早前採集的樣本，今日證實對H7N9病毒呈陽性反應，安排他入住瑪嘉烈醫院傳染病中心。 病人兒子沒有發燒，但昨日開始喉嚨痛，今晚入住傳染病中心接受觀察。病人妻子沒有病徵，衞生署正追蹤病人在香港的其他密切接觸者。 梁挺雄表示，H7N9個案主要是接觸禽鳥或受污染環境致病，人傳人風險相對較低，現時不會出現持續人傳人的情況。 本港至今傳入14宗H7N9個案。市民應時刻保持個人、食物和環境衞生，勿往活禽市場和農場，避免接觸家禽、雀鳥或其糞便。 (http://j.mp/1p0D5W7)

Scientists believe that the H7N9 avian influenza virus is evolving to adapt better to human cells. A study of samples taken from recent cases of the bird flu in China shows that the virus is mutating to thrive in the cooler temperatures found in the human upper respiratory system. This suggests that the virus will be better able to infect humans.
Flu viruses carry hemagglutinin and neuraminidase activity proteins on their surfaces. Inside, they contain eight RNA segments of genetic material needed to produce new viruses. When different strains of the virus enter a host cell, the elements can recombine to create new mutant viruses.
In the case of H7N9, scientists say they have traced the virus back to three different strains of bird flu. Hemagglutinin proteins found on the virus have mutated to be more adaptable to the conditions of the human body, leading scientists to believe that it could evolve into a strain that might be transmissible between humans, and thus potentially pose the risk of a pandemic. At present, bird flu is only transmitted from bird-to-bird and bird-to-human.

Four people in China's Jiangsu Province have become the latest people to fall ill with H7N9, a strain of bird flu new to humans, according to reports.
The three women and one man are in critical condition and are being treated in the provincial capital of Nanjing, health authorities said.
The cases are the second batch to be confirmed after Reuters reported that, "two men in Shanghai, aged 87 and 27, fell sick in late February. A woman in Anhui province also contracted the virus in early March and is in critical condition.
"At this point, these three are isolated cases with no evidence of human-to-human transmission", the WHO representative in China, Dr. Michael O'Leary, told reporters on Monday.
China's National Health and Family Planning Commission confirmed on Sunday that the three cases were the H7N9 virus, which had not previously been known to infect humans.
"A new virus tends to be more virulent in the beginning. Either it is going to become a truly human virus, in which case we have to start dealing with it regularly, or it is going to be primarily an animal virus with just a rare human case," O'Leary said.
Some Chinese had complained that authorities took too long before announcing the deaths on Sunday. O'Leary said the government acted properly as the deaths needed to be investigated."

No symptoms have been found among 88 of their close contacts.
H7N9 bird flu virus is not known to have infected human beings before and does not appear to be highly contagious.
There are no vaccines against the H7N9 bird flu virus in China or anywhere else.

The Centre for Health Protection is investigating the second imported human case of avian influenza A (H7N9) in Hong Kong this winter.
The case involves a 79-year-old man who travelled to Dongguang.
Speaking at a press conference today, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said the man fell ill on January 19 and was admitted to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on January 22.
He is now in stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital.
He travelled to Zhangmutou district in Dongguang alone on January 5, where he visited a wet market selling live poultry, but had no direct contact with the birds.
He returned to Hong Kong via the Lo Wu control point on January 19 but had no fever then.
He lives alone in Tai Po. His two close contacts have no symptoms.
Speaking on the peak flu season, Dr Leung said that since January 2 there have been 85 cases, including 42 deaths, of influenza-associated admission to intensive care units or death among adult patients. Since yesterday, seven severe cases have been recorded, with five deaths.
Among the 85 severe cases, 64 involve people aged 65 or above, including 38 deaths. The figures show the elderly are more vulnerable and Dr Leung urged high-risk people, especially seniors and the conically ill, to get vaccinated early. (http://j.mp/1Bkw3fZ)

他在2月18和22日向另一私家醫生求醫，衞生防護中心公共衞生化驗服務處進一步化驗早前採集的樣本，今日證實對H7N9病毒呈陽性反應，安排他入住瑪嘉烈醫院傳染病中心。
病人兒子沒有發燒，但昨日開始喉嚨痛，今晚入住傳染病中心接受觀察。病人妻子沒有病徵，衞生署正追蹤病人在香港的其他密切接觸者。
梁挺雄表示，H7N9個案主要是接觸禽鳥或受污染環境致病，人傳人風險相對較低，現時不會出現持續人傳人的情況。
本港至今傳入14宗H7N9個案。市民應時刻保持個人、食物和環境衞生，勿往活禽市場和農場，避免接觸家禽、雀鳥或其糞便。 (http://j.mp/1p0D5W7)
