Created by Franklin Roosevelt, the Export-Import Bank gives taxpayer-back loans, loan guarantees, and credit insurance to foreign companies seeking to buy products from U.S. manufacturers.
The bank, colloquially known as Ex-Im, is notorious for inefficiency, ineffectiveness, and sloppy accounting.
It's coming up for reauthorization later this year and for the first time in a long time, opponents have a real shot at ending this excresence of crony capitalism.
Here are three reasons to kill the Export-Import Bank forever.
1. It's expensive.
In 2012 alone, Ex-Im authorized $36 billion in loans, guarantees, and insurance. The bank can carry a portfolio of up to $150 billion, meaning that taxpayers could be on the hook that much money.
2. It doesn't boost U.S. exports.
According to the Mercatus Center's Veronique de Rugy, Ex-Im's favored firms account for around 2 percent of the total dollar value of American exports and 2 percent of the jobs associated with exports.
3. It's crony capitalism at its most obvious.
Although Ex-Im's defenders like to claim the bank levels the international playing field for small U.S. companies, virtually all of the agency's resources go to supporting giant, politically connected firms such as Boeing, General Electric, Caterpillar, and John Deere. The American taxpayer shouldn't be subsidizing their market share at home or abroad.
The new House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, has said he is against reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank. He's joined by representatives and senators on both sides of the aisle who are offended by the uselessness and cronyism of Ex-Im.
Hopefully, this is one New Deal--era policy that will finally disappear for good.

"We've had a 75 or 80 year run with some really aggressive progressive policies," Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). "They haven't worked. They have enhanced America's opportunity deficit, and the American people want a more conservative government."
In 2010, Lee launched a successful primary challenge to three-term incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett and went on to with the general election with 61 percent of the vote. Lee credits hotly contested primary elections not just with his own career but with keeping the Republican Party accountable to its constituents and the values it claims to hold.
"In order for the Republican Party, or any political party for that matter, to be able to lay any claim to be a party of principle, there needs to be a robust debate within that party. And for that to occur I think primary elections will always need to happen," Lee tells Reason TV's Nick Gillespie.
Lee talks about the rise of the Tea Party faction in Congress (of which he is a leader), why the GOP is failing to connect with millennials, and the role of religion in politics. A graduate of Brigham Young University, Lee says his Mormon faith shapes his views on the proper role of government, but adds:
"As a voter what I look for is whether somebody shares my view of government and its proper role. That person may or may not share my faith; that person may or may not have any faith. I'm hiring them not to be my minister. I'm hiring them to represent me in government. I want to know what they think the proper role of government is."

Please join us for a discussion on the Export-Import Bank's contribution to the U.S. economy, future directions and challenges, and ways the U.S. Congress continues to support the bank. Since 2009, the Export-Import Bank has helped create 1.2 million private-sector jobs by financing small business exporters. Over the last five years, it has generated $2 billion more than the cost of its operations. However, the bank is currently operating on a short term extension of its charter which expires on June 30, 2015. Given the forthcoming deadline, a conversation on the role the bank plays in growing American jobs and its contribution to the global economy is needed to spur further support from the U.S. government.

Elizabeth Warren (born June 22, 1949) is an American bankruptcy law expert, policy advocate, Harvard Law School professor, and Democratic Party candidate in the 2012 United States Senate election in Massachusetts. She has written several academic and popular books concerning the American economy and personal finance. She contributed to the oversight of the 2008 U.S. bailout program, and also led the conception and establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Warren attended The George Washington University and the University of Houston. She received a J.D. from Rutgers School of Law–Newark in 1976. Warren taught law at several universities and was listed by the Association of American Law Schools as a minority law professor throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In the wake of the U.S. financial crisis, Warren served as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel created to oversee the Troubled Assets Relief Program in 2008. She later served as Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under U.S. President Barack Obama.

The bank, colloquially known as Ex-Im, is notorious for inefficiency, ineffectiveness, and sloppy accounting.
It's coming up for reauthorization later this year and for the first time in a long time, opponents have a real shot at ending this excresence of crony capitalism.
Here are three reasons to kill the Export-Import Bank forever.
1. It's expensive.
In 2012 alone, Ex-Im authorized $36 billion in loans, guarantees, and insurance. The bank can carry a portfolio of up to $150 billion, meaning that taxpayers could be on the hook that much money.
2. It doesn't boost U.S. exports.
According to the Mercatus Center's Veronique de Rugy, Ex-Im's favored firms account for around 2 percent of the total dollar value of American exports and 2 percent of the jobs associated with exports.
3. It's crony capitalism at its most obvious.
Although Ex-Im's defenders like to claim the bank levels the international playing field for small U.S. companies, virtually all of the agency's resources go to supporting giant, politically connected firms such as Boeing, General Electric, Caterpillar, and John Deere. The American taxpayer shouldn't be subsidizing their market share at home or abroad.
The new House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, has said he is against reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank. He's joined by representatives and senators on both sides of the aisle who are offended by the uselessness and cronyism of Ex-Im.
Hopefully, this is one New Deal--era policy that will finally disappear for good.

Lee credits hotly contested primary elections not just with his own career but with keeping the Republican Party accountable to its constituents and the values it claims to hold.
"In order for the Republican Party, or any political party for that matter, to be able to lay any claim to be a party of principle, there needs to be a robust debate within that party. And for that to occur I think primary elections will always need to happen," Lee tells Reason TV's Nick Gillespie.
Lee talks about the rise of the Tea Party faction in Congress (of which he is a leader), why the GOP is failing to connect with millennials, and the role of religion in politics. A graduate of Brigham Young University, Lee says his Mormon faith shapes his views on the proper role of government, but adds:
"As a voter what I look for is whether somebody shares my view of government and its proper role. That person may or may not share my faith; that person may or may not have any faith. I'm hiring them not to be my minister. I'm hiring them to represent me in government. I want to know what they think the proper role of government is."

Zimbabwe is set to print its own version of the US dollar in order to ease a cash shortage in the country. Central bank governor John Mangudya said the cash, known as bond notes, will be backed by $200m (£140m) support from the Africa Export-Import Bank. The two, five, 10 and 20 dollar notes will have the same value as their US dollar equivalents. Zimbabwe introduced the US dollar after ditching its own currency in 2009 following sustained hyperinflation. Since then Zimbabweans have been using the dollar as well as a number of other foreign currencies including the South African rand and the Chinese yuan. The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) supports US exporters with taxpayer-backed loans and provides loan guarantees to foreign buyers. With the credit agency’s charter set to expire in fall 2014, many Republicans want to let it die, while others are determined to save it. Critics see it as a breeding ground for crony capitalism and corporate welfare, but advocates for American industry consider it a crucial job creator that levels the global playing field. It has become a proxy war in the battle for the soul of the Republican Party.

The Panel, which will be moderated by Ranking Member Waters, will also include the Chairman and President of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, Mr. Fred P. Hochberg, and the chief of staff from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Mr. Owen Herrnstadt.
Two years ago, efforts to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank faced intense opposition from conservative lawmakers who criticized the Bank as inappropriate government interference in the private market. The 2012 reauthorization passed the House only after months of intense pressure and wrangling.
This year, the reauthorization process could be an even greater challenge.
This panel discussion will be an excellent opportunity for Members of Congress, staff, and the public to learn more about how the Bank works and its positive real-life impact on U.S. companies and workers.
