About Rann Utsav (Also known as Desert Festival Kutch)
The Rann Kutch Utsav, Organized by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, is held during the full moon time in winters every year, and people from far and near gather to celebrate the spirit and warmth of the Kutchi people. With numerous cultural activities organized, the grasslands of the Banni host a colorful diversity of arts and crafts of the region. The Festival presents various forms of dances and music under the shade of a full moon, in an aura of a chilling yet serene winter.

The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be the largest salt desert in the world.[1] This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people.[2]
The name "Rann" comes from the Hindi word ran (रण) meaning "desert". The Hindi word is derived from Sanskrit/Vedic word iriṇa (इरिण) attested in the Rigveda and Mahābhārata. As early as 325 BCE, Alexander the Great was aware of the area.[3]

The same word is also used in the languages of Sanskrit origin for a tortoise. The Rann is famous for its marshy salt flats which become snow white after the shallow water dries up each season before the monsoon rains. The district is also famous for ecologically important Banni grasslands with their seasonal marshy wetlands which form the outer belt of the Rann of Kutch. This is the first of a series of videos made on our Gujarat Trip. We covered many places in Gujarat. This part covers our journey starting from Vadodara. We visited the wild ass sanctuary at Dasada near Ahmadabad then proceeded to Bhuj via Bhachau. From Bhuj we went to Kala Dungar or Kalo Dungar. The next part would continue from where this part ends and will highlight the white desert at Rann of Kutch and many other places. Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry; a large part of this district is known as Rann of Kutch which is shallow wetland which submerges in water during the rainy season and becomes dry during other seasons.
The same word is also used in the languages of Sanskrit origin for a tortoise. The Rann is famous for its marshy salt flats which become snow white after the shallow water dries up each season before the monsoon rains. The district is also famous for ecologically important Banni grasslands with their seasonal marshy wetlands which form the outer belt of the Rann of Kutch.
Bhungas are closely linked to the identity of Kutch desert areas. A traditional bhunga house has circular mud walls and a thatched roof. The typical diameter of these houses is approx 15-18 feet with a foundation depth of 24 inches. The roof is made of wooden top dome where bamboo sticks are tied together with a dried grass rope which weaved with thick layer of grass is then placed on the roof and securely tied down.
The walls are made of bamboos sticks with a layer of grass tied to it. Mud and cow dung are used as wall plaster over the grass. They are single cylindrical structures put close to each other to form a house. In common terminology, each bhunga would be equivalent to a room in a house.Bhungas are mainly found in desert islands in the northern parts of Kutch region of Gujarat- especially Banni and Pachham.
Best Time to Visit the Rann of Kutch:-
The Rann of Kutch begins to dry up in October every year, steadily transforming into the desolate and surreal salt desert. The tourist season runs until March.
It's best to head out into the Rann of Kutch only in the early morning or evening, otherwise the salt can be blinding. The full moon is the best time of month to see it, and cultural programs are usually held at Dhordo then. Moonlight Rann camel safari is magical.
For a real cultural extravaganza, visit during the month-long Rann Ustav, which usually begins in mid-late December. The government sets up hundreds of luxury tents on the edge of the Rann of Kutch for visitors.

The right folks to ride the desert safari with
Many an entrepreneur knows how to set up a great resort or hotel, but few know how to address the needs of their guests. Rann Riders gives you no reason to complain. Owned and managed by the descendants of the former rulers of Dasada, you know it has been set up by someone with taste.
Even before I checked into the resort in Dasada village in the Little Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary region in Gujarat, they had me impressed. Asking for directions while driving from Udaipur, they suggested I visit attractions like the Modhera Sun Temple and Patan on the way - it sure saved me a drive back from Dasada later to cover these.
You go to the Little Rann to explore the salt desert and sight wildlife - and if you are not in able hands, you could just have an average experience. Rann Riders had a highly knowledgeable and experienced guide waiting for me, who knew just where to go and at what time to spot the animals, birds and the landscape.
You don't want to travel all the way just to stay in a good resort - there is a purpose to it, and Rann Riders know it.
The resort itself adds to the delight of being there. An ethnically designed eco-resort, it has the appearance of a local village with amenities for your comfort thrown in. Cottages are designed to resemble the 'Kooba' houses of the Bajania community of Dasada and the 'Bhunga' houses of the Rabaris of Kutch, decorated with mirrors, mud-plaster work and embroideries.
If you want to explore the Little Rann of Kutch, stay with the Rann Riders - all your effort and money spent will be rewarded many times over.
* Service: Awesome. From housekeeping to meals to your safaris and sightseeing, the staff is always at hand extending full courtesies in an efficient manner. Tough to fault them.
* Rooms: Traditionally designed but furnished with modern comforts. Rooms are very spacious, with double beds and chairs. Furnishings are hand embroidered linen and cushion covers from nearby villages. Rooms are air-conditioned, bathrooms are fitted with hot and cold showers and western-style toilet fittings, and there is a dry dressing area too. You can lounge in the rooms, or in the verandahs or swinging sofas outside.
* Location: Easily accessible, and just the place to go off for your safaris.
* Amenities: There is a large dining area where you can lounge all day on their comfortable sofas with bolsters and cushions. You can walk around on the footpaths along the lawns, or take a dip in the pool. A small shop allows shopaholics to pick up some local handicrafts.
* Liked Best: The location, design of the resort and their knowledge and experience of taking you on safaris.
* Food Quality: Each meal is a vast spread, with their cooks sure knowing what it takes to keep both Indian and foreign guests happy. The dishes on offer are tasty and wholesome but do not make you feel heavy - important when you have to be out bumping around in the wild.
