Pitch accent is a feature of certain languages whereby variations in pitch (linguistic tones) can be used to differentiate words, but where the potentially distinctive tones are restricted to only one or two syllables within a word – as opposed to fully tonal languages like Standard Chinese, where each syllable can have an independent tone. In a pitch accent language, the syllable with phonemic tone is typically one that is acoustically prominent (stressed). Also many words may not be marked for tone at all.
Languages that have been described as pitch accent languages include certain Scandinavian and South Slavic languages, Ancient Greek, Vedic Sanskrit, Japanese, Korean, Hiaki and Shanghainese.
It has been claimed that the term "pitch accent" is not coherently defined, and indeed it is also used to denote a different feature, namely the use (or relatively strong use) of pitch, as opposed to other cues such as acoustic intensity, to give prominence (accent) to a syllable or mora within a word. The latter feature is dealt with in the article Pitch accent (intonation).

「Learn Japanese」 Intro to Japanese - The Hiragana Syllabary, Vowels, Pitch Accents, and More Learning Japanese is a video series by and personal project of content-creator l3reezer that was initially suppose to be a method to refresh the knowledge of the Japanese language that he was supposed to already know for his own studies. To be exact, a student who had only been studying the language of Japanese for two years at the time of this video series's conception. And a pretty bad student on record, at that. There are sure to be the occasional mishaps, mistakes and misinformation, so do always be keen on learning with your own attentive eye and mind.I look forward to continuing on with the series with videos a...

Leonard Muellner (Professor Emeritus of Classical Studies at Brandeis University) and Belisi Gillespie present all the content covered in two semesters of an Introduction to Ancient Greek college course. The Greek accent is a musical accent, which is slightly different from the "stress" accents that most modern language learners are accustomed to. In this video, Professor Muellner takes us through WHY the accent system works the way it does in Ancient Greek and he gives us some tips for memorizing the rules for using them. Learning accent rules is essential for successfully reading Ancient Greek. This video corresponds to pages 6-15 (including the drills and exercises) in the Hansen & Quinn textbook.

This linguistics seminar titled "Tonal Variation in Bantu Language Varieties: The Case of Ikoma-Nata-Isenye" was given by Dr Lotta Aunio, University of Helsinki at SOAS, University on 19 November 2013 (http://bit.ly/11ougca). Find out more about studying Linguistics at SOAS at http://www.soas.ac.uk/linguistics Abstract: The dialects of Ikoma, Nata, and Isenye are classified as a single language E(J)45 in the updated Guthrie’s list (Maho 2003). These varieties are spoken in the Mara Region (Western Tanzania) by approximately 30,000 speakers. The speakers of these three varieties use these names as ethnonyms and identify themselves with these names. All three varieties seem to be mutually intelligible, if only with minor difficulties and adaptation. However, the nominal tone systems in the...
Speaker: Noriko Manabe As a musical form without the distraction of a melody but a well-defined beat, rap offers an opportunity to explore the rhythmic and musical aspects of a language. An interesting case study is rap in Japanese, which has completely different syntax, vocabulary, accent patterns, and phonemes from English. Several pioneers of Japanese rap initially thought that rapping in their own language was impossible: while the most striking aural patterns in American rap are the rhymes and stress accents, which punctuate and vary the rhythm, Japanese verbal arts have traditionally not emphasized rhyming, and the language lacks stress accents. Therefore, Japanese rappers had to find ways of exploiting the grammatical and phonological resources of their own language to create flow ...
