Sowing

Sowing is the process of planting seeds. An area or object that has had seeds planted will be described as being sowed.

Plants which are Usually Sown

Among the major field crops, oats, wheat, and rye are sown, grasses and legumes are seeded, and maize and soybeans are planted. In planting, wider rows (generally 75 cm (30 in) or more) are used, and the intent is to have precise, even spacing between individual seeds in the row; various mechanisms have been devised to count out individual seeds at exact intervals.

Sowing Depth

In sowing, little if any soil is placed over the seeds. More precisely, seeds can be generally sown into the soil by maintaining a planting depth of about 2-3 times the size of the seed.

The Seeds of Love

The Seeds of Love is the third album by the British band Tears for Fears, released in September 1989.

The album, which reportedly cost over £1 million (GBP) to produce, retained the band's epic sound while showing increasing influences ranging from jazz and blues to The Beatles, the latter of which is most evident on the hit single "Sowing the Seeds of Love".

The Seeds of Love was a big international success, entering the UK Album Chart at number one and reaching the top ten in numerous other countries including the U.S. It has been certified Platinum in several territories including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands. Despite its success, it would be the last album that bandmembers Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith would work on together for over a decade.

Production

The first song composed for the album was "Badman's Song" (originally titled "The Bad Man Song"), written during the band's 1985 world tour after Orzabal overheard two members of the tour personnel maligning him in a hotel room one night. The song was co-written by Orzabal with keyboardist Nicky Holland, who was touring with the band throughout 1985. Holland would go on to play an integral part in the writing and recording of The Seeds Of Love album, much as keyboardist Ian Stanley had on the band's previous album.

Sowing the Seeds of Love

"Sowing the Seeds of Love" is a song by the British group Tears for Fears. It was released as the first single from their 1989 album The Seeds of Love, and was a worldwide hit, reaching the top five in the UK, Canada (where it was #1), Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the US where it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, while topping the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The single also reached the Top 20 in numerous other countries.

Background

The song is a pastiche of The Beatles and was produced in a style reminiscent of their late 1960s output. It was written in June 1987, during the week of the UK General Election in which Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party won a third consecutive term in office. The election prompted Roland Orzabal, who comes from a working-class background, to take an interest in politics and socialism. At the time of its release, he considered this to be the most overtly political song that Tears For Fears had ever recorded. The lyrics refer to Thatcher's election win ("Politician granny with your high ideals, have you no idea how the majority feels?"), and make a reference to musician Paul Weller who had risen to fame in the 1970s as a left-wing political songwriter with his band The Jam before seemingly forsaking these ideals in the 1980s to make less political music with The Style Council ("Kick out the Style, bring back the Jam!").

Sowing the Seeds

Sowing the Seeds is a music compilation video released by the British group Tears For Fears.

Released in 1990, it features the three hit singles from their platinum selling third album The Seeds of Love and also an animated promo video for the song "Tears Roll Down" which was the B-side to their 1989 hit single "Sowing the Seeds of Love".

Buddy Montgomery

Charles "Buddy" Montgomery (January 30, 1930, Indianapolis, Indiana – May 14, 2009) was an American jazz vibraphonist and pianist. He was the younger brother of Wes and Monk Montgomery. He and brother Monk formed The Mastersounds in the late 1950s and produced ten recordings. When The Mastersounds disbanded, Monk and Buddy joined their brother Wes on a number of Montgomery Brothers recordings, which were arranged by Buddy. They toured together in 1968, and it was in the middle of that tour that Wes died. Buddy continued to compose, arrange, perform, produce, teach and record, producing nine recordings as a leader.

Biography

Buddy first played professionally in 1948; in 1949 he played with Big Joe Turner and soon afterwards with Slide Hampton. After a period in the Army, where he had his own quartet, he joined The Mastersounds as a vibraphonist with his brother Monk, pianist Richie Crabtree and drummer Benny Barth in 1957. He led the "Montgomery-Johnson Quintet" with saxophonist Alonzo "Pookie" Johnson from 1955 to 1957. His earliest sessions as a leader are from the late 1950s. He played briefly with Miles Davis in 1960. After Wes Montgomery’s death in 1968, Buddy became active as a jazz educator and advocate. He founded organizations in Milwaukee, where he lived from 1969 to 1982; and Oakland, California, where he lived for most of the 1980s, that offered jazz classes and presented free concerts.
