We go on an Asian grocery store adventure! ---------------------------- Perks and I had to cancel a few weekends worth of road trips after an unfortunate incident involving an angry bee, a rocky ledge and a "severe plantar facia sprain" of my right foot… No worries though, we don't need to travel to have an adventure! Instead of our usual hiking and exploring, this week we decided to bring a camera along on our monthly trip to the Asian grocery store. Check us out as we shop for ingredients for our favorite filipino food and thai food dishes. A few highlights: Buying fish -- a busy, high turnover Asian grocery is a great place to buy fresh fish. Most stores offer a wide variety of choices at prices far below local American counterparts. They'll always clean and descale the fish, and you can also ask them to remove the head, fillet or cut it into steaks for free. Some places will even fry it up right there in store! Filipino food -- we always try to stock up on our favorite Filipino ingredients. This includes buying sago and soft tofu to make a dessert called "taho", as well as packets of calamansi juice (a filipino lime) that are used to flavor "pancit", a dish made with a type of noodle labelled "bihon" that most stores will carry. We also like to buy pre-marinated boneless bangus (milkfish) in the frozen section. You can also buy bangus fresh in the fish section -- however, the bones are so small and annoying, it's way easier to work with the frozen variety. How to buy sake -- shopping for sake is easy once you learn a few keywords and what to look for on the bottle. Side note -- I believe sake is pronounced "sak-ay" versus the "sak-ee" that I say in the video: First and foremost, always check for a date on the bottles. For premium sake, you don't want anything that is more than 8-10 months past the bottle date. Not all bottles will be dated -- in that case, watch for warning signs like dusty bottles or other signs of bad storage…like no refrigeration or being on display in direct sunlight (heat and light are the enemy) Next, seek out the words Ginjo (premium) or Daiginjo (super premium). Sake is graded based on how finely milled the rice is, and ginjo sake is at the top. By the way, I think it's pronounced Ginjo (like 'g' in good) and not Jinjo like I say it in the video. Another word to look for is Junmai, which means that no additional alcohol has been added outside of the distillation process. Some brewers will add additional alcohol to adjust the flavor profile -- doing so means they are prohibited from using Junmai on the label. Finally, look for numbers printed on the bottle. One of the most important is the sake meter value (SMV), a number between -6 and +12 that measures sweetness or dryness. +3 is considered neutral, with lower values indicating sweeter and higher values drier. Some bottles will also have an acidity number that ranges 0.7 to 2.0 -- higher acidity will skew the taste towards drier and sharper. By referring to these numbers together, you'll already have a decent idea what the sake will taste like before you even buy it!!!
