The fascinating story of Peru's savage 20-year civil war and struggle against the psychotic Maoist guerilla movement 'Sendero Luminoso' (The Shining Path) under the demonically charismatic maoist fanatic Abimael Guzman, aka Chairman Gonzalo and how he nearly destroyed Peruvian society. For 13 years Guzman and his marauding band of maoist thugs waged a relentless war of indiscriminate terror against the civil population both in the countryside and the cities.
It shows how the war took Peru to the brink of collapse, and details systematic human rights abuses committed by the military and government forces. Just as he appeared to be on the verge of bringing about a collapse of Peruvian society, Guzman was dramatically captured by a special forces unit in Lima in 1992 and later tried and imprisoned and even turned informer, bringing about the sudden collapse and disintegration of his movement. The film shows rare footage of the police surveillance and home video footage of Guzman in his Lima apartment shortly before his capture. Theodore Dalrymple compared Sendero to the Khmer Rouge, also inspired by Mao: "The worst brutality I ever saw was that committed by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) in Peru, in the days when it seemed possible that it might come to power. If it had, I think its massacres would have dwarfed those of the Khmer Rouge. As a doctor, I am accustomed to unpleasant sights, but nothing prepared me for what I saw in Ayacucho, where Sendero first developed under the sway of a professor of philosophy, Abimael Guzmán."
Backed by media and big business, President Alberto Fujimori cyncially exploited the war and panic to assume authoritarian powers and used emergency anti-terror powers to eliminate and silence opposition long after the terrorist threat had passed. Film is a powerful reminder and warning of how terrorism can turn a nation in on itself and tears at the fabric of society turning neighbour against neighbour and how those who fight it become as brutal and ruthless as the terrorists and can destroy the democracy it claims to protect.
It also describes the aftermath and fall of Fujimori and subsequent efforts to bring about reconciliation and closure to a traumatised nation and his successors.

State of Fear
State of Fear is a 2004 techno-thriller novel by Michael Crichton in which eco-terrorists plot mass murder to publicize the danger of global warming. Despite being a work of fiction, the book contains many graphs and footnotes, two appendices, and a twenty-page bibliography in support of Crichton's beliefs about global warming. Climate scientists, science journalists, environmental groups and science advocacy organisations dispute Crichton's views on the science as being error-filled and distorted, and it was described as "pure porn for global warming deniers" by journalist Chris Mooney.
The novel had an initial print run of 1.5 million copies and reached the #1 bestseller position at Amazon.com and #2 on the New York Times Best Seller list for one week in January 2005. The novel itself has garnered mixed reviews, with some literary reviewers stating that the book's presentation of facts and stance on the global warming debate detracted from the book's plot.

State of Fear is, like many of Crichton's books, a fictional work that uses a mix of speculation and real world data, plus technological innovations as fundamental storyline devices. The debate over global warming serves as the backdrop for the book. Crichton supplies a personal afterword and two appendices that link the fictional part of the book with real examples of his thesis.

It Happens
"It Happens" is a song co-written and recorded by American country music duo Sugarland. It was released in February 2009 as the third single from their album Love on the Inside. The duo's members, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, wrote the song along with Bobby Pinson, with whom the duo also co-wrote the album's first two singles, "All I Want to Do" and "Already Gone".
Content
"It Happens" is an up-tempo accompanied by steel-string acoustic guitar and electric guitar. In it, the female narrator (Jennifer Nettles, the duo's lead singer) tells of oversleeping and coming to work late. She borrows her neighbor's car to drive to "Wally World" in the second verse, and is involved in an accident with her ex and his new girlfriend. A "Pssh" sound precedes the phrase "It happens" on all but the second chorus, so as to make the phrase sound like "shit happens".
Reception
In his review of the album, Entertainment Weekly critic Chris Willman said that the song recalled "cheekily potty-mouthed hits like Blake Shelton's 'Some Beach'." Thom Jurek of Allmusic cited the song as an example of the album's personal influence, as Nettles had gone through a divorce while writing it. Matt Bjorke described the song favorably as well in his review for the Roughstock website. He called it "a playful, irreverent song" and considered it a better single choice than "Love" (which was originally slated as the album's third single), because he thought that "It Happens" showed a more traditionally country sound than "Love" did.

The fascinating story of Peru's savage 20-year civil war and struggle against the psychotic Maoist guerilla movement 'Sendero Luminoso' (The Shining Path) under the demonically charismatic maoist fanatic Abimael Guzman, aka Chairman Gonzalo and how he nearly destroyed Peruvian society. For 13 years Guzman and his marauding band of maoist thugs waged a relentless war of indiscriminate terror against the civil population both in the countryside and the cities.

Just as he appeared to be on the verge of bringing about a collapse of Peruvian society, Guzman was dramatically captured by a special forces unit in Lima in 1992 and later tried and imprisoned and even turned informer, bringing about the sudden collapse and disintegration of his movement. The film shows rare footage of the police surveillance and home video footage of Guzman in his Lima apartment shortly before his capture. Theodore Dalrymple compared Sendero to the Khmer Rouge, also inspired by Mao: "The worst brutality I ever saw was that committed by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) in Peru, in the days when it seemed possible that it might come to power. If it had, I think its massacres would have dwarfed those of the Khmer Rouge. As a doctor, I am accustomed to unpleasant sights, but nothing prepared me for what I saw in Ayacucho, where Sendero first developed under the sway of a professor of philosophy, Abimael Guzmán."
Backed by media and big business, President Alberto Fujimori cyncially exploited the war and panic to assume authoritarian powers and used emergency anti-terror powers to eliminate and silence opposition long after the terrorist threat had passed. Film is a powerful reminder and warning of how terrorism can turn a nation in on itself and tears at the fabric of society turning neighbour against neighbour and how those who fight it become as brutal and ruthless as the terrorists and can destroy the democracy it claims to protect.

Just as he appeared to be on the verge of bringing about a collapse of Peruvian society, Guzman was dramatically captured by a special forces unit in Lima in 1992 and later tried and imprisoned and even turned informer, bringing about the sudden collapse and disintegration of his movement. The film shows rare footage of the police surveillance and home video footage of Guzman in his Lima apartment shortly before his capture. Theodore Dalrymple compared Sendero to the Khmer Rouge, also inspired by Mao: "The worst brutality I ever saw was that committed by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) in Peru, in the days when it seemed possible that it might come to power. If it had, I think its massacres would have dwarfed those of the Khmer Rouge. As a doctor, I am accustomed to unpleasant sights, but nothing prepared me for what I saw in Ayacucho, where Sendero first developed under the sway of a professor of philosophy, Abimael Guzmán."

It's a story of intrigue, corruption and multiple murders, stretching from the streets of Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur, to Switzerland, France and the US as well as Hong Kong and Singapore, all the way to Australia's doorstep.

And the escalating scandal is threatening to bring down Malaysia's Prime Minister.
"This charge sheet was the smoking gun."
Four Corners reporter Linton Besser investigates two sets of extraordinary allegations of bribery and corruption: one involving a massive arms deal; the other, the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund. It's a story that's made headlines around the world.
"Hello Mr Prime Minister, ABC Australia. I'm wondering if you can explain the hundreds of millions of dollars in your account?"
Linton Besser's pointed questions landed him and cameraman Louie Eroglu in serious trouble.
"I've been placed under arrest ...we are waiting for some legal advice but at the moment it looks like they intend to charge us."
On Monday night Four Corners will reveal new allegations about the staggering sums of money that have flowed into the bank accounts of Najib Razak.
And as the scandal grows, so does the crackdown on the Malaysian Government's political opponents.
"They're just threatening people now and it's very effective."

The novel itself has garnered mixed reviews, with some literary reviewers stating that the book's presentation of facts and stance on the global warming debate detracted from the book's plot.
State of Fear is, like many of Crichton's books, a fictional work that uses a mix of speculation and real world data, plus technological innovations as fundamental storyline devices. The debate over global warming serves as the backdrop for the book. Crichton supplies a personal afterword and two appendices that link the fictional part of the book with real examples of his thesis.
The main villains in the plot are environmental extremists. Crichton does place blame on "industry" in both the plot line and the appendices. Various assertions appear in the book, for example:
The science behind global warming is speculative and incomplete, meaning no concrete conclusions can be drawn regarding human involvement in climate change.
Elites in various fields use either real or artificial crises to maintain the existing social order, misusing the "science" behind global warming.
As a result of potential conflicts of interest, the scientists conducting research on topics related to global warming may subtly change their findings to bring them in line with their funding sources. Since climatology can not incorporate double-blind studies, as are routine in other sciences, and climate scientists set experiment parameters, perform experiments within the parameters they have set, and analyze the resulting data, a phenomenon known as "bias" is offered as the most benign reason for climate science being so inaccurate.

Despite being a work of fiction, the book contains many graphs and footnotes, two appendices, and a twenty-page bibliography in support of Crichton's beliefs about global warming. Most climate scientists dispute Crichton's science as being error-filled and distorted, and it was described as "pure porn for global warming deniers" by one skeptical science journalist.
The novel had an initial print run of 1.5 million copies and reached the #1 bestseller position at Amazon.com and #2 on the New York Times Best Seller list for one week in January 2005. The novel itself has garnered mixed reviews, with some literary reviewers stating that the book's presentation of facts and stance on the global warming debate detracted from the book's plot.
State of Fear is, like many of Crichton's books, a fictional work that uses a mix of speculation and real world data, plus technological innovations as fundamental storyline devices. The debate over global warming serves as the backdrop for the book. Crichton supplies a personal afterword and two appendices that link the fictional part of the book with real examples of his thesis.
The main villains in the plot are environmental extremists. Crichton does place blame on "industry" in both the plot line and the appendices. Various assertions appear in the book, for example:
The science behind global warming is speculative and incomplete, meaning no concrete conclusions can be drawn regarding human involvement in climate change.
Elites in various fields use either real or artificial crises to maintain the existing social order, misusing the "science" behind global warming.
As a result of potential conflicts of interest, the scientists conducting research on topics related to global warming may subtly change their findings to bring them in line with their funding sources. Since climatology can not incorporate double-blind studies, as are routine in other sciences, and climate scientists set experiment parameters, perform experiments within the parameters they have set, and analyze the resulting data, a phenomenon known as "bias" is offered as the most benign reason for climate science being so inaccurate.
