Portsmouth (i/ˈpɔərtsməθ/) is the second largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Located mainly on Portsea Island, it is the United Kingdom's only island city. Portsmouth is situated 64 miles (103 km) south west of London and 19 miles (31 km) south east of Southampton. The city has a population of 205,400 and is the only city in the United Kingdom with a greater population density than London. The City of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Football Club are both nicknamed "Pompey".
As a significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth has the world's oldest continuously used dry dock and is home to some noted ships, including HMS Warrior, the Tudor carrack Mary Rose and Lord Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory (the world's oldest naval ship still in commission). By the 19th century, Portsmouth was one of the most fortified cities in the world. During the Second World War, the city served as a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings and was also chosen as the headquarters for the Supreme Allied Commander, Dwight D. Eisenhower. The city was bombed extensively during what was known as the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people. Although smaller than in its heyday, the naval base at HMNB Portsmouth remains the largest dockyard for the Royal Navy and is home to two-thirds of the entire surface fleet.
A football team is the collective name given to a group of players selected together in the various team sports known as football.
Such teams could be selected to play in a match against an opposing team, to represent a football club, group, state or nation, an All-star team or even selected as a hypothetical team (such as a Dream Team or Team of the Century) and never play an actual match.
There are several varieties of football, notably Association football, Gridiron football, Australian rules football, Gaelic football, rugby league, and rugby union. The number of players selected for each team within these varieties and their associated codes can vary substantially. In some, use of the word "team" is sometimes limited to those who play on the field in a match and does not always include other players who may take part as replacements or emergency players. "Football squad" may be used to be inclusive of these support and reserve players.
The term football club is the most commonly used for a sports club which is an organised or incorporated body with a president, committee and a set of rules responsible for ensuring the continued playing existence of one or more teams which are selected for regular competition play (and which may participate in several different divisions or leagues). The oldest football clubs date back to the early 19th century. The words team and club are sometimes used interchangeably by supporters, although they typically refer to the team within the club playing in the highest division or competition.

The club was founded in 1898 with John Brickwood — owner of the local Brickwoods Brewery — as chairman, and Frank Brettell as the club's first manager. A blue plaque on the wall of 12 High Street Portsmouth commemorates the founding on 5 April. The club joined the Southern League in 1899, with their first league match being played at Chatham Town on 2 September 1899 (a 1--0 victory),followed three days later by the first match at Fratton Park; a friendly against local rivals Southampton, which was won 2--0, with goals from Dan Cunliffe (formerly with Liverpool) and Harold Clarke (formerly with Everton). That first season was successful, with the club winning 20 out of 28 league matches, earning them the runner-up spot in the league. The 1933--34 season saw Portsmouth again reach the FA Cup...
The goals from Pompey's 4-2 Sky Bet League Two win over Wycombe, with commentary from Express FM/Pompey Player. Paul Hayes gave the struggling visitors the lead after 10 minutes at Fratton Park, as the Chairboys enjoyed the better of the early stages. Christian Burgess bundled home an equaliser on 34 minutes, before Gary Roberts drove home a penalty on the stroke of half-time. Hayes shocked the stadium when he hit back for the visitors almost immediately, but the first half drama wasn't done yet. Substitute Conor Chaplin - on for the injured Curtis Main - produced a moment of magic to give the Blues a 3-2 lead to round off a frantic stoppage time period. Carl Baker grabbed his second goal of the season with a far post volley after 53 minutes, which proved to be the decisive goal. Pom...

The goals from Pompey's 5-1 Sky Bet League Two hammering of Barnet at Fratton Park, with commentary from Express FM/Pompey Player. John Akinde's 25th minute penalty gave the Bees a surprise lead on 25 minutes, after Tom Davies' handball in the box. But Conor Chaplin - celebrating his first start of the season - struck ten minutes later, as he latched onto Gary Roberts' pass to fire home from a tight angle. And Roberts himself got on the scoresheet just after the break, as he exquisitely turned his defender before slotting past the keeper with the outside of his left boot. Carl Baker made it 3-1 on 55 minutes, curling home from outside the area. Roberts had the chance to put the game to bed on 63 minutes, as Chaplin was felled in the box by Mira Dembele, but his spot kick was saved. W...

Settled in 1623, Portsmouth New Hampshire claims to be the nation's third-oldest city, and it served as a focal point of ship building and commerce on the Eastern seaboard until the late 1800s. With a population of roughly 20,000 people, Portsmouth is large enough to provide a tremendous amount of experiences and activities but small enough that one never feels like they are living in an urban setting.
We're off to France for the summer travelling on Brittany Ferries! The Portsmouth to Cherbourg fast ferry is the Normandie Express - taking just 3 hours to sail from port to port, this fast catamaran carries up to 850 passengers and 235 cars on each crossing! We've been on it before for a day trip to France on bikes this time we are loaded up with as much as we can fit in the car and roof box! Left Portsmouth early and after a marathon drive we woke the following morning to blazing sun and 25deg in Cannes. Amazing how far you can get with fast toll roads and a days driving! Introduced the kids to the hitchhikers guide to the universe on audio cd.... they loved it.... a little to much! After 3 cds Marvin the paranoid android was wearing thin! ______________________________________________...

Harry Redknapp took over as manager in early 2002, with Jim Smith returning to the club as assistant manager. Redknapp was able to make the most of Mandarić's willingness to invest in players at a time when competitors were struggling after the collapse of ITV Digital's television deal with the Football League. Just over a year later, Portsmouth were celebrating winning the Division One Championship and promotion to the Premier League, winning the title with a game to spare. This video charts the 2002/2003 promotion campaign starting from November right round to the promotion party in May with all the goals from Merson, Todorov, Taylor, Stone, Yakubu etc.

For a small city Pompey's best lads punched well above their weight and gained national notoriety for their antics, particularly away from Fratton Park. A natural progression from the Pompey Boot Boys of the 1960's this tasty little firm came from Portsea Island. Being the most densley populated City in the UK the boys had a great degree of loyalty to each other as they were mainly close mates. IT has to be understood that Firms in the 1980's were a progression from the original skinhead crews of the 1960's and they represent British culture of those eras. It was about fashion, music, camaraderie, turning y...

Portsmouth's Premiership debut (and only their second top division campaign during the last 45 years) was a fine one, as they finished 13th and established Fratton Park as one of the hardest Premiership grounds to get a result at. Only their dismal away form (with only two away wins all season) prevented them from finishing even higher and challenging for a European place, but it was still a very good season for the only newly promoted side to preserve their Premiership status. After a good start to the season which saw Portsmouth top of the Premiership after three games, the team slumped into the relegation zone, but rallied and only lost one of their last ten matches to finish 13th - ahead of more established sides like Everton, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur. A VHS video I have found from the 1998 -1999 season. Looks like I made my own seasons review. Portsmouth's centenary season, 1998-99, saw a serious financial crisis hit the club and in December 1998, chairman Martin Gregory quit his post after being targeted of abuse from Portsmouth fans which gave him no choice but to sell his 97% ownership of the club and in February 1999, Portsmouth went into receivership.[2] They avoided relegation again that season, and were then saved from closure by new chairman Milan Mandarić, who saved the club with a takeover deal in May 1999. Jim Smith's boys could not really have got closer to the Premier League. Just one goal away from an automatic promotion place, they then missed out on Wembley by the same margin, thanks to a controversial off-side goal and the loss of key players. But on the bright side this has been a real season to remember. It has been a season of Guy Whittingham's amazing scoring feats, the skills of Play of the Year Paul Walsh and the triumphant run that took Pompey so close to the very top of the First Division. It might have been a case of So Near yet So Far, but with all the highlights from a truly memorable First Division campaign and over 80 Pompey goals to celebrate there are plenty of reasons to be proud of the men from Portsmouth. This video is a precious record of a very special season and...
