Tolland is the name of some places:
The Old Connecticut Path was the Native American trail that led westward from the area of Massachusetts Bay to the Connecticut River Valley, the very first of the North American trails that led west from the settlements close to the Atlantic seacoast, towards the interior. The earliest colonists of Massachusetts Bay Colony used it, and rendered it wider by driving cattle along it. The old route is still followed, for part of its length, by Massachusetts Route 9 and Massachusetts Route 126.
In lean years of the early 1630s, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony ran short of grain, Nipmuck farmers in the valley of the Connecticut River loaded some of their abundant surplus maize into birch-bark backpacks and trod a familiar route to the settlements at the mouth of the Charles River, where they traded food for European goods made of copper and iron and woollen cloth.Fur traders and the exploratory party of John Oldham (1633) penetrated this first of the trails west into the continent's interior. In 1635, some settlers from Watertown took this route when they removed to Wethersfield, Connecticut.
Tolland is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 15,052 at the 2010 census.
Tolland was named in May, 1715, and incorporated in May, 1722. According to some, the town derives its name from being a toll station on the old road between Boston and New York. Alternatively, its name could have been taken after Tolland in Somerset, England. Today Interstate 84, the main highway connecting New York City, Hartford, Connecticut and Boston, bisects Tolland, but the town retains a charming village feel. Tolland Green is the informal center of the community, and a national historic district. The Green's features include an old-fashioned penny candy and antiques store known to locals as the 'Red and White'; the town's original 19th-century town hall, now an arts center; the 'Old Tolland Jail' museum; the 'Tolland Inn' bed and breakfast; and the Hicks-Stearns Museum, a restored Victorian house. The architectural styles on display, including the white steeples of several churches, are reminiscent of a picture-postcard New England scene. The town is also home to the supposedly haunted 'Benton Homestead'.

The Trail to Tolland begins on the banks of the Willimantic River in Nye Holman State Forest. Travelers on the Old Connecticut Path forded the river taking advantage of the shallow water and low river banks found in the Willimantic River's wide flood plain. The trail west closely follows the modern roads to Tolland and Hartford, yet remains in a world apart. The ancient roadway, following the route of the Old Connecticut Path from the Willimantic River at Nye Holman State Forest to Tolland Green at the center of Tolland, was once an important route for the founders of Hartford, Windsor and Wethersfield, and the early settlers. The ancient way has been bisected and bypassed by modern roads and development. The fragments that remain are beautifully preserved and provide a window into travel...
