Edna May Oliver (November 9, 1883 – November 9, 1942) was an American stage and film actress. During the 1930s, she was one of the better-known character actresses in American films, often playing tart-tongued spinsters.
Born Edna May Nutter in Malden, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ida May and Charles Edward Nutter, Oliver was a descendant of John Quincy Adams and John Adams, the sixth and second presidents of the United States. She quit school at age fourteen in order to pursue a career on stage and achieved her first success in 1917 on Broadway in Jerome Kern's musical comedy Oh, Boy!, playing the hero's comically dour Aunt Penelope.
In 1925, Oliver appeared on Broadway in The Cradle Snatchers, co-starring Mary Boland, Gene Raymond and Humphrey Bogart. Oliver's most notable stage appearance was as Parthy, wife of Cap'n Andy Hawks, in the original 1927 stage production of the musical Show Boat. She repeated the role in the 1932 Broadway revival, but turned down the chance to play Parthy in the 1936 film version of the show to play the Nurse in that year's film version of Romeo and Juliet.
George Arliss (10 April 1868 – 5 February 1946) was an English actor, author, playwright and filmmaker who found success in the United States. He was the first British actor to win an Academy Award, as well as being the earliest-born actor to win one.
Born in London and baptised as Augustus George Andrews but commonly listed as George Augustus Andrews, his relatives referred to him as Uncle Gus. Arliss was educated at Harrow. He started work in the publishing office of his father (William Joseph Arliss Andrews) but left at age eighteen to go on the stage. He began his acting career on the stage in the British provinces in 1887. By 1900, he was playing London's West End in supporting roles. He embarked for a tour of America in 1901 in Mrs Patrick Campbell's troupe. Intending to remain in the US only for the length of the tour, Arliss stayed for twenty years, eventually becoming a star in 1908 in The Devil. Producer George Tyler commissioned Louis Napoleon Parker in 1911 to write a play specifically tailored for Arliss, and the actor toured in Disraeli for five years, eventually becoming closely identified with the 19th century British prime minister.

Tart-tounged school teacher Hildegard Withers becomes involved in solving a murder. This scene is from the first of Edna May Oliver's three appearances as the character. NOTE: The operator jokingly calls Miss Withers "Lydia Pinkham." This is a reference to a woman who was known at the time for selling alcohol-based home medicines that supposedly relieved menstrual pains. Please visit me at my blog: http://comicsradio.blogspot.com

Edna May Oliver starred in 3 Hildegarde Withers movies, opposite James Gleason as Inspector Piper. This is the first, based on the novel of the same name by Stuart Palmer. Go to Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SIabblsjZ4 Filmed in the 1930s, it reflects the mores of the time, and shows how far we've come. Miss Withers has an integrated class of students, there are 2 blacks and an Asian in her class. Although the script has her making a stereotypical crack about her Jewish student, it is intersesting to note it is the black Abraham who finds her hatpin, and is shown to be so smart that he's already 2 days ahead in his homework. (And while she calls him a "good boy", that's because her class is filled with boys and girls, obviously).
Featuring: * Ruth Donnelly (May 17, 1896 - November 17, 1982) * Edna May Oliver (November 9, 1883 - November 9, 1942) * Una O'Connor (October 23, 1880 - February 4, 1959) * Marjorie Main (February 24, 1890 - April 10, 1975) * Jane Darwell (October 15, 1879 - August 13, 1967) * Elsa Lanchester (28 October, 1902 - 26 December, 1986). Although there were thousands of fabulous character actresses back then, these six always make me enjoy like a child through their terrific work in every movie they were in. They had all very different acting styles, and I guess that the only thing that had in common, it was their tremendous versatility since they were able to play incredibly well either comedy or drama, and equally could make arise laughter and tears in the audience. Most of them rea...
A great cartoon with caricatures of great stars of 1938: Katherine Hepburn, les Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Charles Laughton, Spencer Tracy, Laurel et Hardy, Edward G. Robinson, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Greta Garbo... and Fats Waller and the great Cab CALLOWAY. Due to those racist stereotypes, this cartoon has been banned. It's been nominated for the Oscars... bit it went to Ferdinand the Bull. More about Cab CALLOWAY , Go to www.thehidehoblog.com
From 1941, the Burns and Allen radio Christmas show, with Edna May Oliver as The Wicked Witch, Herman the Duck (a vocal ringer for Donald) and the voice of Elmer Fudd, who were both regulars then. Jam-packed and wacky. One highlight, Gracie sings a parody of "Daddy" about Santa to her "Duckie". Heavily and meticulously cleaned from a distorted source, the only surviving one apparently, by Tormented Artist Ink Studios (me, John Ellis).
Plot: During World War I, two American Doughboys are more interested in picking up girls than in military duty. Christmas with George and Gracie For today’s program we turn the clock back to December 23, 1941, to visit with George Burns and Gracie Allen. The program was broadcast just 16 days after the December 7th bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the country was still reeling. A bit of fantasy was just the thing needed to help bring back the Christmas spirit, especially for the children. This episode also features one of my favorite character actresses, Massachusetts native Edna May Oliver as a wicked witch. We hope you’ll enjoy this special Christmas broadcast titled “Santa’s Workshop.”
Programs from radio's Golden Age are filled with traditions, and today Southbridge Old Time Radio has a favorite Christmas-themed episode from The New Burns and Allen Show. We join Gracie as she is telling a story to her pet duck Herman. As Herman falls fast asleep, Gracie soon follows. That's when they begin the journey to Santa's Workshop. They soon learn that Santa Claus is in trouble. A wicked witch has stolen all the presents. There will be no toys for the children this year! Gracie and Herman aren't about to let that happen, and they set out at once to find the wicked witch and take back the toys. Here's a little inside information for listeners. There's a Massachusetts connection. Edna May Oliver, the wicked witch, was born right here in Massachusetts. She was a great character a...
"We are friends for life." The man speaking: Micawber, played by W.C. Fields with great comedic charm and human warmth. The child addressed: David, played by Freddie Bartholomew in his Hollywood debut. The movie: David Copperfield, still one of the best ever screen adaptations of a Charles Dickens novel. "To call the casting inspired is to underrate it," historian David Shipman wrote in his The Story of Cinema. Lionel Barrymore, Edna May Oliver, Maureen O'Sullivan, Basil Rathbone and more join Fields and Bartholomew in portraying the eccentrics, cads and loving family of this film directed by George Cukor. David O. Selznick produced, insisting on an attention to Dickensian detail that included matching the sets to the first edition's illustrations. The result: one of the greatest page-to-s...

Jack Pearl, born Jack Perlman (October 29, 1894 – December 25, 1982), was a vaudeville performer and a star of early radio. Born in New York, Pearl made an easy transition from vaudeville to broadcasting when he introduced his character Baron Munchausen on The Ziegfeld Follies of the Air in 1932. His creation was loosely based on the Baron Munchausen literary character. As the Baron, Pearl would tell far-fetched stories with a comic German accent. When the straight man (originally Ben Bard, but later Cliff Hall) expressed skepticism, the Baron replied with his familiar tagline and punchline: "Vass you dere, Sharlie?" This catch phrase soon became part of the national lexicon. Typical of the dialogue: Hall: You seem to be effervescent tonight. Munchausen: Haff you effer seen me ven I effer...

Trailer for the 1936 screen classic, ROMEO AND JULIET, starring Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard, John Barrymore, Edna May Oliver and Basil Rathbone. The George Cukor-directed film received four Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Set Design. Per IMDB: "This was the last film producer Irving Thalberg personally produced before his death. The film's Los Angeles premiere took place at the Carthay Circle Theater on September 14, 1936, the night of Thalberg's death. Frank Whitbeck, the radio announcer for the broadcast of the premiere, decided not to interview the stars of the movie on the air. The actors were so grief-stricken that Whitbeck was afraid they would break down crying, so he simply announced their names as they arrived." "The role...
