In 2013, during the digging of foundations for a new boutique hotel in the Minories near the Tower of London, a stone carved Roman eagle was unearthed and described by archaeologists as one of the most important and best-preserved Romano-British sculptures dating from the first century AD.
The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) asked Quod to 3D scan the eagle and capture as much of the original detail as possible for conservation purposes.
At a height of 65cm and width of 55cm, it was a substantial artefact and it was decided that the Artec Spider hand held 3D scanner would be the most suitable scanner for the task. A broken but relatively intact wing was also scanned and digitally re-attached to the main body.
With a resolution of up to 0.1mm, a point accuracy of up to 0.03mm and the ability to record full-colour, the Artec Spider uses video technology at up to 7.5fps to capture highly accurate 3D data and the video explains the process.

At CAA-UK 2015, Bradford
The 100 Minories project is a commercial excavation by LP archaeology of a site just to the north of the Tower of London. The project has sought to integrate a number of existing digital archaeology techniques into the daily commercial archaeology work-flow using open source tools and an on-site digital archaeologist. This includes the use of tablets, wifi-enabled digital cameras, photogrammetry, TotalStation, and traditional written context sheets and drawn plans. A core tenet of the project is that all data generated should be provided on-line as Open Data as soon as is practical. The main output of this work will be a set of apps and QGIS plugins to support the Museum of London Single Context Recording system, including the digitising of single context plans into the project GIS and the merging of this data into the ARK online database. This talk will demonstrate the work flow used on the 100 Minories project and the open source software used and developed to support this, and discuss the potential cost savings, improved data quality and community involvement that may result.

Tortured Beauties - China: The frightening new Chinese craze for Western-style beauty driving a nationwide boom in dangerous and drastic cosmetic surgery procedures.
For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65252
Modern China is working hard to give itself a new image. And now a frightening new craze for Western-style beauty is driving a nationwide boom in dangerous and drastic cosmetic surgery procedures.
"Until recently, communist ideals valued natural beauty. Today, other things are considered beautiful", explains fashion photographer Zheng Chen. At just 19, young model Ai Xiao Qi has found success in China's fashion world. But she isn't under any illusions about the painful cause of her popularity: "when you're in front of cameras, your face must have a strong profile". A strong profile: the new Chinese euphemism for surgically-enhanced Western features. In a bid to be as tall as Westerners, Chinese girls are even undergoing gruesome procedures to break and extend their legs. After a botched surgery, tour guide Qi Lixia ended up horribly disfigured. "The doctors tried to re-assure me. But my nose was completely deformed." But such is the pressure on young girls that she's prepared to go under the knife again: "Looking good helps me in my job". As this mantra becomes more widely accepted, the message to young girls is clear: it's what's on the outside that counts.

A video from a recent visit to the Museum of London. Or actually two - I had to cut it in half, I had too much footage. :-D Second half coming up v. soon. It's an interesting museum with lots of information on the history of the city from thousands of years ago up until today ... unfortunately it's partly closed at the moment because they're redoing the exhibitions, so these videos only go up to the great fire in 1666.

In 2013, during the digging of foundations for a new boutique hotel in the Minories in the City of London, a stone carved Roman eagle grasping a serpent was unearthed and described by archaeologists as one of the most important and best-preserved Romano-British sculptures dating from the first century AD. The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) asked Europac3D to 3D scan the eagle and capture as much of the original detail as possible for conservation purposes. Despite the amazing preservation of the eagle after centuries buried in a Roman ditch, the right wing was detached from the main body, but was itself still relatively intact. After scanning both pieces, we were able to align the two batches of data and recreate the eagle in its original glory. With all data processed, we created a fully rotatable digital file which is suitable for websites, exhibition monitors or digital presentations. We also created a fly-through video as an educational tool to showcase the eagle detail. If required, an identical eagle can now be printed in 3D or milled in stone using the scan data.

The Great Gildersleeve (1941--1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton Philharmonic Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, first introduced on Oct. 3, 1939, ep. #216. The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s.

Monica Lewinsky: The price of shame
In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become a constant. In January 2014, Professor Steffen Bohm, Dr Zareen Bharucha, and David Watson spoke at the Minories Galleries on the impact of eating local foods.
Over the past 18 months, the Essex Sustainability Institute, at the University of Essex, has been engaged in a research project studying the link between local food and well-being, supported by the East of England Co-operative Society and the British Academy. The research team, comprising Professor Steffen Boehm, Dr Zareen Bharucha and David Watson, has explored whether participating in local food projects (such as box schemes, allotments and community supported agriculture) has an impact on people's well-being, and if so, why? Over the course of 18 months, we have reviewed the available evidence, undertaken a survey study, and talked to people from all over Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

This is my footage from the Peterborough Model Railway Exhibition that is held annually at the East of England Showground in Peterborough, United Kingdom. There is a good range of model railways on display and I have filmed as many of the layouts as my battery would allow. This is a long video, so enjoy a drink and a snack whilst watching the footage. There is some easter eggs (well surprises and oddballs) in the video. Can you spot them?
The layouts in the video are:
Hambledon Valley Railway (O Gauge, Live Steam)
Addiston South
Battersby North End
Fourgig East
Hemyock in S/7
Minories (GN)
Hoglington (N Gauge)
Norman Crossing
Bowlers Croft
Nictun 2000
Kingswear
The Sheaf Valley Railway
APA Park (N Gauge)
Westford BRW
Ruston Quays
Thornbury Hill (N Gauge)
Broadgate
Newcastle By The Water (N Gauge)
Billingham
Grime Street
Coniston Road Depot (N Gauge)
Engaine-Cum-Hardy
Redwood Lumber
Steiner Tor
Little Histon (N Gauge)
Sutterton
I would like to thank all of the exhibitors for granting me permission to film their impressive model railways. Its always polite to ask the exhibitors first before filming as manners cost nothing I think :).

'Everybody's Uncanny': a film concerning everyday encounters with the paranormal. Perhaps not everybody, but certainly very many people have stories to tell of odd occurrences which might, just might, be evidence of supernatural influences, active in their lives. In this film, a group of people recount their own experiences.
This film was show at a special 'All Hallows Eve Event' at the Minories Art Gallery in Colchester, Essex on October 31st, 2013.

Oppose Bacteriological Warfare: Biological Warfare During the Korean War (1952)

During the 1948 Israel War of Independence, International Red Cross reports raised suspicion that the Jewish Haganah militia had released Salmonella typhi bacteria into the water supply for the city of Acre, causing an outbreak of typhoid among the inhabitants. Egyptian troops later claimed to have captured disguised Haganah soldiers near wells in Gaza, whom they executed for allegedly attempting another attack. Israel denies these allegations.
During the Cold War, US conscientious objectors were used as consenting test subjects for biological agents in a program known as Operation Whitecoat. There were also many unpublicized tests carried out on the public during the Cold War.
Considerable research on the topic was performed by the United States (see US Biological Weapon Testing), the Soviet Union, and probably other major nations throughout the Cold War era, though it is generally believed that biological weapons were never used after World War II. This view was challenged by China and North Korea, who accused the United States of germ warfare in the Korean War (1950--1953).
Cuba has also accused the United States of spreading human and animal disease on their island nation.
At the time of the Korean War the United States had only weaponized one agent, brucellosis ("Agent US"), which is caused by Brucella suis. The original weaponized form used the M114 bursting bomblet in M33 cluster bombs.
While the specific form of the biological bomb was classified until some years after the Korean War, in the various exhibits of biological weapons that Korea alleged were dropped on their country nothing resembled an M114 bomblet. There were ceramic containers that had some similarity to Japanese weapons used against the Chinese in World War II, developed by Unit 731.
Some of the Unit 731 personnel were imprisoned by the Soviets, and would have been a potential source of information on Japanese weaponization. The head of Unit 731, Lieutenant General Shiro Ishii, was granted immunity from war crimes prosecution in exchange for providing information to the United States on the Unit's activities.
The Korean War allegations also stressed the use of disease vectors, such as fleas, which, again, were probably a legacy of Japanese biological warfare efforts. The United States initiated its weaponization efforts with disease vectors in 1953, focused on Plague-fleas, EEE-mosquitoes, and yellow fever - mosquitoes (OJ-AP). However, US medical scientists in occupied Japan undertook extensive research on insect vectors, with the assistance of former Unit 731 staff, as early as 1946.
The United States Air Force was not satisfied with the operational qualities of the M114/US and labeled it an interim item until the United States Army Chemical Corps could deliver a superior weapon. The Air Force also changed its plans and wanted lethal biologicals.
The Chemical Corps then initiated a crash program to weaponize anthrax (N) in the E61 1/2-lb hour-glass bomblet. Though the program was successful in meeting its development goals, the lack of validation on the infectivity of anthrax stalled standardization.
Around 1950 the Chemical Corps also initiated a program to weaponize tularemia (UL). Shortly after the E61/N failed to make standardization, tularemia was standardized in the 3.4" M143 bursting spherical bomblet. This was intended for delivery by the MGM-29 Sergeant missile warhead and could produce 50% infection over a 7-square-mile (18 km2) area.
Unlike anthrax, tularemia had a demonstrated infectivity with human volunteers (Operation Whitecoat). Furthermore, although tularemia is treatable by antibiotics, treatment does not shorten the course of the disease.

Aiding and abetting the periodically frantic life in the Gildersleeve home was family cook and housekeeper Birdie Lee Coggins (Lillian Randolph). Although in the first season, under writer Levinson, Birdie was often portrayed as saliently less than bright, she slowly developed as the real brains and caretaker of the household under writers John Whedon, Sam Moore and Andy White. In many of the later episodes Gildersleeve has to acknowledge Birdie's commonsense approach to some of his predicaments. By the early 1950s, Birdie was heavily depended on by the rest of the family in fulfilling many of the functions of the household matriarch, whether it be giving sound advice to an adolescent Leroy or tending Marjorie's children.
By the late 1940s, Marjorie slowly matures to a young woman of marrying age. During the 9th season (September 1949-June 1950) Marjorie meets and marries (May 10) Walter "Bronco" Thompson (Richard Crenna), star football player at the local college. The event was popular enough that Look devoted five pages in its May 23, 1950 issue to the wedding. After living in the same household for a few years with their twin babies Ronnie and Linda, the newlyweds move next door to keep the expanding Gildersleeve clan close together.
Leroy, aged 10--11 during most of the 1940s, is the all-American boy who grudgingly practices his piano lessons, gets bad report cards, fights with his friends and cannot remember to not slam the door. Although he is loyal to his Uncle Mort, he is always the first to deflate his ego with a well-placed "Ha!!!" or "What a character!" Beginning in the Spring of 1949, he finds himself in junior high and is at last allowed to grow up, establishing relationships with the girls in the Bullard home across the street. From an awkward adolescent who hangs his head, kicks the ground and giggles whenever Brenda Knickerbocker comes near, he transforms himself overnight (November 28, 1951) into a more mature young man when Babs Winthrop (both girls played by Barbara Whiting) approaches him about studying together. From then on, he branches out with interests in driving, playing the drums and dreaming of a musical career.

Trafficking of children is a form of human trafficking and is defined as the "recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, and/or receipt" of a child for the purpose of exploitation. Though statistics regarding the magnitude of child trafficking are difficult to obtain, the International Labour Organization estimates that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year. The trafficking of children has been internationally recognized as a major human rights violation, one that exists in every region of the world. Yet, it is only within the past decade that the prevalence and ramifications of this practice have risen to international prominence, due to a dramatic increase in research and public action. A variety of potential solutions have accordingly been suggested and implemented, which can be categorized as four types of action: broad protection, prevention, law enforcement, and victim assistance. Major international documents regarding child trafficking include the 1989 U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, the 1999 I.L.O. Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, and the 2000 U.N. Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children.
Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) constitutes a form of coercion and violence against children and amounts to forced labour and a contemporary form of slavery.
A declaration of the World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, held in Stockholm in 1996, defined CSEC as:
'sexual abuse by the adult and remuneration in cash or kind to the child or a third person or persons. The child is treated as a sexual object and as a commercial object.'
CSEC includes the prostitution of children, child pornography, child sex tourism and other forms of transactional sex where a child engages in sexual activities to have key needs fulfilled, such as food, shelter or access to education. It includes forms of transactional sex where the sexual abuse of children is not stopped or reported by household members, due to benefits derived by the household from the perpetrator. CSEC also potentially includes arranged marriages involving children under the age of 18 years, where the child has not freely consented to marriage and where the child is sexually abused.
Prostitution of children under the age of 18 years, child pornography and the (often related) sale and trafficking of children are often considered to be crimes of violence against children. They are considered to be forms of economic exploitation akin to forced labour or slavery. Such children often suffer irreparable damage to their physical and mental health. They face early pregnancy and risk sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS. They are often inadequately protected by the law and may be treated as criminals.
Child trafficking and CSEC sometimes overlap. On the one hand, children who are trafficked are often trafficked for the purposes of CSEC. However, not all trafficked children are trafficked for these purposes. Further, even if some of the children trafficked for other forms of work are subsequently sexually abused at work, this does not necessarily constitute CSEC. On the other hand, according to the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, the definition of Severe Forms of Trafficking in Persons includes any commercial sex act performed by a person under the age of 18. This means that any minor who is commercially sexually exploited is defined as a trafficking victim, whether or not movement has taken place. CSEC is also part of, but distinct from, child abuse, or even child sexual abuse. Child rape, for example, will not usually constitute CSEC. Neither will domestic violence.
Although CSEC is considered as child labour, and indeed one of the worst forms of child labor, in terms of international conventions, in legislation, policy and programmatic terms, CSEC is often treated as a form of child abuse or a crime.

Leonard Peltier (born September 12, 1944) is a Native American activist and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM). In 1977 he was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for first degree murder in the shooting of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents during a 1975 conflict on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Peltier's indictment and conviction is the subject of the 1992 documentary Incident at Oglala, a film directed by Michael Apted. Peltier has been identified as a political prisoner by certain activist groups. Amnesty International placed his case under the "Unfair Trials" category of its Annual Report: USA 2010, citing concerns with the fairness of the proceedings. His murder conviction has survived appeals in various courts over the years.
In 2002 and 2003, Paul DeMain, editor of News From Indian Country, wrote that sources had told him that Peltier had said he killed the FBI agents; DeMain withdrew his support for clemency. At the trials in 2004 and 2010 of two men indicted for the murder of Anna Mae Aquash in December 1975 at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, prosecution witnesses testified that Peltier had told them and a small group of fugitive activists, including Aquash, that he had shot the two FBI agents. Peltier issued a statement in 2004 accusing one witness of perjury for her testimony and being a sellout. The two men charged in the murder of Aquash were convicted.
Peltier is incarcerated at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, Florida. His projected release date is October 11, 2040. His last parole hearing was in July 2009; his request for parole was denied. Peltier's next scheduled hearing will be in July 2024.
In 1965, Peltier relocated to Seattle, Washington. He worked for several years and became the owner of an auto body station. In the city, Peltier became involved in a variety of causes championing Native American civil rights, and eventually joined the American Indian Movement (AIM).
In the early 1970s, he learned about the factional tensions at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota between supporters of Richard Wilson, elected tribal chairman in 1972, and traditionalist members of the tribe. Wilson had created a private militia, known as the Guardians of the Oglala Nation (GOONs), whose members were reputed to have attacked political opponents. Protests over a failed impeachment hearing of Wilson contributed to the AIM and Lakota armed takeover of Wounded Knee in February 1973, which resulted in a 71-day siege by federal forces, known as the Wounded Knee Incident. They demanded the resignation of Wilson. The takeover did not end Wilson's leadership, the actions of the GOONs or the violence; at least 50 murders were reported on Pine Ridge during the next three years.
In 1975 Peltier traveled to the Pine Ridge reservation as a member of AIM to try to help reduce the continuing violence among political opponents. At the time, he was a fugitive, with a warrant issued in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for the attempted murder of an off-duty Milwaukee police officer, a crime for which he was later acquitted.

Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity.
On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catchphrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (Oct. 22, 1940).
He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods—looking primarily to promote its Parkay margarine spread — sponsored a new series with Peary's Gildersleeve as the central, slightly softened and slightly befuddled focus of a lively new family.

In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become a constant. In a brave talk, she takes a look at our “culture of humiliation,” in which online shame equals dollar signs — and demands a different way.
